Designing Pokemon Type Swaps! (with playing cards) 

I love how elegantly over the course of the video they captured the feeling of googling something and then just "NO WHY THAT IS NOT WHAT I WANT"

Totally get taking a break from the pikachu as eevee thing. Practicing with random pokemon type swaps first is a great low stakes way to get a feel for designing these guys. Maybe you can find some random pokemon and pokemon type generators to find more options. Or just do ones you want, not everything needs to be a strict challenge. I just like seeing your designs and the process behind them.

I love the concept of the teacup animal normal-type pokemon because of the implications of teacup animals in general. They are genetically selected for "shape" but are actually extremely unhealthy and the practice is pretty unethical as it aims to breed animals with short life spans and bad quality of life. So...maybe for the pokemon equivalent that could be an explanation why there are the tea-cup pig pokemon and then the sinistea line but maybe the lore states that the tea-cup pig evolution is not found in the wild and only experienced trainers can ever get the first stage evolution to evolve into the normal-type tip-to-tail teapot pig. Many naive trainers who get a teacup pig pokemon will one day wake up and realize they have a sinistea in their party instead.

Respectfully, the way you reacted to the sponge crab is everything. Do *I* love the round boi? No but I love that you do, and your excitement made me excited. Personally, my favorite is water pangoro. Swamp bear good.

I really love the grass Wooloo bc while it’s probably unintentional, the tied together dangly hair bits remind me of the bonnets welsh people wear with our traditional dress. Since Postwick is heavily theorised to be based off of wales and Wooloo mostly congregate in Postwick I just think it’s fitting lol

Given that lycanroc has multiple forms anyway, I feel that the either or both of the last two designs could work as a basis for alternate evolutions. Like a lycanroc High tide and Low tide. The former being more flowy and aquatic in design being pure water and the latter having more visible coral or rocks possibly gaining a secondary rock typing.

About Braxien's floof, there is such thing as steel wool. Not really sure what is it for, I just saw it's an handy fire starter if you connect it to a 9 volt battery

This is a random thought, but could steel Braixen still be a steel fox, but instead of using star metal, what about things like Quick Silver. Foxes are pretty fast creatures so I think it could fit. Or maybe it could use something like silver jewlery like beeds that they could toss out like ball bearings, playing into the trickster aspects of foxes in old stories.

The level of like... Just raw experience you have in "Art making" is like, astonishing to me. It's like i'm at my little hike trail path and i'm seeing you far away at the top of a huge mountain, and you're still screaming about climbing up higher. It is very inspiring, but a bit intimidating.

In interviews with the Pokemon staff, they plainly say that no one singular person designs a pokemon. A lot of the time designs are shared from artist to artist to spark inspiration. And I think that's what you just learned here. Amazing video regardless!

Steel Braixen's end design is pretty cool, maybe it just needs a different pose? I think having the tail wrapped around so that it's in that traditional "samurai" katana-draw pose would help bring out the Steel vibes a bit more, as well as bigger haunches to imitate the haidate (thigh guards) of samurai armor. If you're not a fan of the shooting star ear floof drooping down, they could be angled up to imitate the decorative fin-things on the kabuto (helmet). The shapes and proportions look good though, I would bet a couple tweaks to the way they're displayed would go a long way. You could also integrate that kind of rust-red color to not stray too far from fire-type Braixen's palette while still giving it more of a metallic tone. Just some thoughts!

For the Cubone my immediate idea would have been to base it off of the thing in cartoons, where upon getting hit by lightning or shocked by electricity it shows their skeleton. This also works along with cubone often having the lightning rod ability. Who knows, maybe you could even have it hold a lightning rod? Idk... Edit: realized I should clarify, I do not hate your design. I love your design. He is an adorable baby zeus thing... but hey if you ever decide to give him an evo for whatever reason, that could be an idea... eh?

I would like to give some (hopefully constructive) criticism here. I noticed you shied away from lore base ideas and I think in the future you could really benefit from that. With Braixen I was thinking of making them steampunk witch or changing them into an Artifacter class rather then the Mage they were originally based off of.

I had to take a minute to collect myself at "Are you kidding me, tartigrade!?" That made me laugh harder than expected.

The playing card randomizing is such a fun idea! It’s just like my hobby of going on Pokémon randomizer sites and then fusing the two, great job!

My immediate first thought when talking about Braixen’s ear fluff was steel wool-which I think is super fitting, because steel wool is extremely flammable and what a lot of entertainers use for those fancy fire tricks. I’d highly recommend looking into it! Maybe pond stones for Lycanroc? Just some really smooth rocks? Great work, by the way!

I have a Portuguese Water Dog, and seeing them here was an unexpected yet very welcome surprise!! Loved the lycanroc design concepts :D

I think the most important thing is to have a strong concept before you start. Like how much easier kingler was once you were inspired by the rotund crab, and the teacup piggy. One thing all pokemon have in common, whether or not the execution is perfect, they all have strong concepts and inspirations that feed into their designs.

Legends Arceus is really fun. Story is really great. Also, because Lycanroc has 3 forms, you could have easily used all 3 of the options you were given, different forms depending what water they are evolved near or in. They all looked so good

I would love a water dog pokemon with the "mane" being bubbles (that help the pokemon against the impact of cold water like the water dog's fur)

I think this is the first time I have sat through a patreon reading willingly, and not just to see the redesigns... but because the concept of the patreon Eeveelution being the one reading them out was too good

I actually liked all of the lycanroc's redesign sketches, specially the top one, since the red really popped through, but I also appreciate the bottom left design more muted palette. And in my opinion, I just think the droopy ears look so cute! And that fluffy coat is adorable!

Teacup piggie ABSOLUTELY hits the spot. Like, I would have them in my team, because damn that is both cool, reads like a Pokemon AND I actually love them. I've fallen out of love with Pokemon but I still adore content like this, because this is really the kind of Pokemon I miss. The colour scheme and confused complexity of new Pokemon really turns me off. Teapot pig is perfection though, feels like a completely original creature where some of the others read more as variants (which was kinda the point!) For Braixen, my immediate thought for the ear tufts was metal shavings, although I don't know how that would be simplified. It would be kind of wild if they were somehow magnetic, and some of the shape language (like the stick and the skirt-looking part) was made out of objects and metal sticking to them, and they were like trophies to them. You'd have to be careful not to get your Klefki stuck on them... As a concept it sounds neat to me, although designing it would probably be a pain! Edit: Thought about it, and honestly it'd be some fun lore. Once something is stuck to Braixen, it is impossible to remove by force. Braixen are known to take their Trainer's important objects as hostages until their wishes are fulfilled.

I really liked all of the three lycanroc designs, especially the one with the floppy ears because it looked super cute. The pearl idea looked good on it and kinda make since as a replacement for the rocks. It was a pretty solid design and I could easily see it actually being in the games. It did look kinda like a poodle, but poodles are water dogs so it still fits with the water typing.

I actually really loved the Pangoro! Probably my favorite design of the bunch!

I think it'd be cool if you took your favorite pokemon and designed them as types they're weak to. I love clefairy and I've always thought a steel/poison version would look interesting

Off topic, but there is a kind of crab that grabs sea anemone by giving them a little poke so the anemone unlatches and then the crab puts it on it's shell. It's helps the crab be protected from predators and the sea anemone gets a fun little ride. It's really cute and I love it so much Also there's the pompom crabs which have fur on their claws, very cute 10/10 But DAMN your kingler looks so legit I would take that round friend in a heartbeat if I saw it in a Pokemon game

Since you’re unhappy with your steel type Braixen maybe try basing it off an artificer, artificers use magic to infuse objects (usually armor or robots) with extraordinary abilities, the whole Delphox line is based off of witches so naturally a steel version could be an artificer!

Braixen is so cool, even if it looks like more of a dark/fairy type or something like that, it's so gorgeous, love the design.

The Braxien as a steel type, could use a re-draw, but it's still a pretty good final design. Loved the Kingler one, along with all the ones where you got your friends to help you, and the pig in a tea-cup along with dark type rockruff was so cute.

I do actually love the design of Braxien itself. It feels like the problem there is also related to the fact that stars are also connected to the psychic type which is the impression it kind of leaves more than a steel type.

These look super cool, I love the idea! For the Braixen one, I kind of thought of a knight in shining armor type, kinda like Aron. Maybe it could be tried for future steel types? /pos

10:38 Braixen with a sword would be great as a steel/psychic-type. It would fit the trope of a "sword forged from a meteorite" well. Pokémon like Jirachi and Metagross are meteorite-based Pokémon with that type combination as well. Also keep in mind that Mawile was originally a mono-steel-type (before the fairy-type was a thing) and it's design doesn't really puts that across. 14:30 I like the one on the right the most. It's fur looks drenched and the tail looks like a wave, so the water-type looks fitting. I mean Simipour is just a wet monkey, why should a water dog not fit that typing as well? 17:00 My idea for a water-type Scatterbug would be based on a dragon fly larva. They live underwater, but this theme could fit a regional variant of a Trapinch even better. 29:10 I think the new Hisuian-forms ain't that bad. Most of them just appear to be weird looking because of the 3D-models, but the 2D-art of them (especially the starters) made by Ken Sugimori looks really cool. Exept for Enamorus, but that is because it's related to the other forces of nature and they all looked weird from the start.

The extra time you took with this video really comes out in the editing. Beautiful frames and transitions, showing each step of your process and all the foibles along the way. I love it.

I think the main thing you struggle with is second guessing yourself, which alot of us can relate to. You second guess your designs and your skills so often, it drives you to be dependent on outside sources (your friends) to come up with your final design. Now... im NOT saying you shouldn't ask for help or that it's bad, BUT I'm saying you should put more you into your designs instead of relying on the stool your friends give you to get the cookie you know what I mean? You can still ask for help and such, but maybe don't base 85% of your final design off of theirs... yah know? Be more confident in your own abilities and skills. You are amazing and an inspiration to thousands of people. If you ever need to, do not be afraid to stop drawing or recording, take a nice break, drink some hot tea, take a hot bath, just take some R&R to collect yourself, cause heck knows how much stress you're weighing on yourself... ~Much love ❤❤❤🙏🌸

I personally love the braixen type swap! The colors work really well together, the fluff resembling stars and sort of like a knight from the olden days. I think that making this lead into A knight-like design with night and star imagery! The concept is great though! All the other designs are really good and these videos really inspire me to try fakemon myself, so thanks!

I think all these designs are super cute. The only thing I'd mention is the possibility for a water type scatterbug's design being based off mosquito larvae and they grow and swim in water, I still think the design here is super cute and it being based off drain fly larvae is really unexpected but cool. I just thought I'd mention my first thought to the prompt was "little swimming bug? LIKE MOSQUITO LARVAE!!"

I love the water Pangoro. Could even be grass dual type. Or one of those weird pokemon that has monotype but for some reason learns more moves of another type

AHH The art for Paetreons evolution method is amazing! Every time you upload a video I know it's going to be top quality, you and your team always put in extra details that just uplift the entire production. Take your time with the Pikachu evolutions, no matter the wait it's always worth it to see your work.

I’m pretty new to drawing, so this video was really helpful for me. Seeing someone who even in sketches is a really great artist struggle with concepts is a good reminder that I don’t need to be perfect 100% of the time. I appreciate your honesty with the process. And we have a new addition to the round boys!

Weirdly, I liked ALL of your water lycanroc designs, even the ones you hated. I do agree that the Braixen doesn’t really read as steel type, I think I associate stars and purple coloration in Pokémon a lot more with psychic because of cosmog and starmie and such. I still like how the Braixen looks, though!

(not finished with the video yet) Your Lycanrock giving off Poodle vibes is actually a good thing and probably would've helped you settle on a fur design quicker. Poodles are water dogs. The haircuts we know as show poodle hair cuts were made to help the dog when it jumped into freezing waters. Their fur is cut all the way down to the skin so the cold water doesn't linger and sit on them, but they keep huge balls of fluffed up fur on their joints, ears, and tail tip so those areas don't lock up or get frost bitten from the cold. EDIT: Eyy I like the one you ended up settling on

As for the typesqaps I think my faves are lycanrock (cause I just really like Lycanrock and the concept was really cool) and the cute little Pigteacup mon. As someone who struggles with designing characters and concepts as a whole, these videos are always amazing to watch. I love how much thought you put into your designs to make sure they end up a way you would like. And even if you don’t end up loving them, you still tried your best and always think of ways to improve them. I love how creative these all are!

I think another possible concept for the tea cup pokemon you could've used a chicken. The reason for that is because when you hatch a deformed chicken or assist a chicken that was struggling with hatching they struggle to walk do to having weaker muscles. I forget the name of what the exercise is called. I wanna say it's just like tea cupping a chicken but I think it's wrong. But anyways bascsilly a practice to get these chickens to learn proper balance and for them to exercise to gain the muscles needed you'll place them into a teacup and let them escape on their own. There is also this other method where you make them bascsilly a booster seat. But that's besides the point. Also sorry for this being long winded.

The steel braxien design could've had a bat instead of a sword, I think it would feet the street style jacket it has

I love the Pokémon you made. It’s not easy making a Pokémon design (and those steel types are a colorful array of design variations). Also I am so happy that you used a less popular dog breed as inspiration for the lycanroc even though you didn’t like the results. Also I saw a basenji in the google search bar and I knew that I had to comment about that! Love that breed.

You always go WAYYY above and beyond with your videos and you draw so many things!!!! My advice: you can chill out a little! You don't have to do a combination of EVERY card you get, maybe just a few? like 3-4? Ease into it especially if you're already stressed or on a time crunch. Take it easy! I am continuously humbled by the amount of work you put into every video because it's FUCKING INSANE!!!!! Good luck with your eevee pikachu video!

Here is also another Lycanroc idea. The Ocean light Zones. Like the sunlight zone, twilight zone, and the Midnight zone.

I think that for baixen you should have followed the witch concept of the pokemon a bit more, maybe having the tail be a witch pot instead of a broom

The way you draw Pokemon is actually perfect, to me. It looks so much like official art I lose my mind every time I see it

my first thought when i saw braixen was playing off the fantasy magic user theme and turning them from an apprentice wizard into a Knight in training since armor screams steel type and giving them some sort of sword instead of a stick to use as a wand :D

I think you have a much easier time with designing them when you look at the different elements and parts of the environment they're coming from, rather than heading them off of entire other animals.

4:12 Samurott is a water-type that uses two swords called "seamitars". So a water-type Duoblade could be just those but with eyes and a wave-shaped cloth on each handle

These came out so cool! I know you weren't 100% happy with every one of them but from a separated from the process perspective, they all came out awesome!

I think the lesson here is to ask for help when you're struggling with a concept design. A new perspective/person can bring in new ideas you could never think of on your own.

I hope you don't mind me suggesting, but if you wanted to keep the whole star steel for Braxian I think using the Finnish mythology would have proved useful. The Finnish people believed the Northern Lights were created when a foxes tail grazed the night sky. Hope this helps!

These are amazing, I think the water Pangoro is my favorite. They're all quality friends, though. Also, the fact you snuck two redesigns at the end on top of everything is nuts, I love your take on the heart genie (helps that I think the original is ugly as sin, but sshh).
