I commend your effort for such a small but important feature, For anyone looking for a MUCH easier solution - 9mm label maker tape fits the VIRPIL buttons perfectly. Black print on a clear back ground worked really well for me. Easy to change, only limitation is the font/characters on the label maker you choose. As bindings expand for Star Citizen (which will be ri-donky-donk once we have 5 professions in game (we have 1.1 now), let alone the 20 or so more that are planned), ease of customization and alteration is going to become more and more of an issue). GameGlass and/or Streamdeck type options seem the most likely solution.
Laser engraving through a paint layer is a genius idea! If you have a small enough nozzle, you could print a layer of black on top that allows the light through the text. Bambu studio allows a pause and a manual filament change even without an AMS. Keep it up!
Yeah, the laser engraving seems to be a standard solution for cockpit builders. Your idea actually sounds interesting. I'll probably make a video about different ways to create backlit panels in the future, just because I'm also interested in seeing the differences.
That is really cool! I currently have my Virpil panels labelled using a label printer, with the labels stuck underneath the buttons covering the B1, B2 engravings. Looks much nicer having the label backlit though. I might have to work on a good way to do this, maybe making custom inserts for the original buttons 🤔
Ive found my resin printer invaluable for printed keycaps. Work out real well. I use Siraya Tech Blu but next bottle i buy ill get a non transparent colour (I just use a sharpie to couolor in the rasied letters at the moment)
I only wish I had your skill. Yes, you made some errors. Love to see the mistakes. Shows you are truly human. If I only knew how to use programs in conjunction with an engraver and 3D Printer I would be set. I for now and probably the future am stuck with my Brother label maker.
I think these errors really show how I learn my skills: just by doing and googling a lot. :D But in the end, it's something I've picked up one skill at the time. Doing renovations at our home => woodworking. Then learning just to 3D print stuff, later making my own simple models and so on.
Nothing is funnier than "this will be a short, fun little project" and you jump cut to a visibly frustrated future self to explain how it was NOT a short fun little project. Fantastic work.
