Designing the Da Vinci-class (Star Trek Online)

The Da Vinci-class is a 25th century successor to the Saber-class. I had a lot of fun designing this ship for Star Trek Online. In this video I go into a bit of detail about my design mentality, and a bit of the lore behind this ship.
Thanks to Cryptic Studios for sponsoring this video!

You called it strange for Starfleet, but I say I LOVE it. It's a perfect leave from the typical saucers while maintaining a familiar style Starfleet is known for. It looks much more like a Spaceship now. The nacelles being built into the main Hull, the Hull being a single, solid piece. I hope Eaglemoss makes a replica.

Now this is the kind of content I love, even if I'm not a fan of STO in general. Positive, breaks down design principles both with in-universe design logic and real world reasoning, etc. Also love that you have a logical reason for some light greebling unlike so many designs in fiction which just slap it on without a care. Was not expecting an ersatz cloaking device nor the gatling phaser. I never read the SCE books and I wasn't expecting anyone to tap the gatling pulse phaser concept from the early drafts of Star Trek: First Contact. I do like the gatling implementation here more (1) since it feels like an evolution of the _Defiant's_ breakdown prone pulse phasers (given how often it's implied they had to replace components for it during the Dominion War) or possible a further development of the 'megaphasers' mentioned in the original design documents for the _Reliant_ in Star Trek II. Speaking off, was really getting a _Wrath of Khan_ impression from that animation. (1) Even if I'm not crazy about pulse phasers. Beam phasers are my jam since they look cooler, are portrayed as a far more flexible weapon system, and just are more impressive/powerful in general.

You make ships for STO?! That's amazing! Really interesting going over the design phases. The general shape from the ship it's based on, using patterns and curves for depth and contrast to the finer greebles of detail to go along with in-game abilities. Amazing work. As a STO player, I've been wanting a updated saber escort for ages as it's one of my favorites. Now I've finally got one and the fact that you designed it is all the cooler to me. While looking at the model in game, I noticed what appears to be a landing pad for a runabout on the upper hull (you can see it at 3:46). Is that what it's for or is it the entry for the whole shuttle bay?

When I first looked at the design I thought that it would make sense by the 25th century for Starfleet to take in elements from other species to enhance their new ships. Good work! It's definitely different than your standard 24th century designs with the bulkier, yet more organic shapes, but I think it can definitely integrate into the next century of Trek lore.
@Stingra87
@Stingra87 2 года назад
I had no idea that you work on STO, and I find that really cool. The game is dated (the ground combat is in such desperate need of an overhaul that will never come) but the space combat is still fun. And honestly? STO's timeline is superior to having Picard or Discovery being the future, STO's storyline is fun and it feels like Star Trek. That being said, I would personally, as a ship designer myself, change some things on this model. I find the Saber class to be just unforgivingly ugly so while not a total departure, my design changes would definitely distance it from it being a direct successor to the Saber. I will just never be a fan of the 'gaptooth' portion there on the front of the ship, so I'd just complete the saucer entirely. I'd also reduce the overall width of the saucer by about a quarter and get rid of the sections that connect the nacelles to the saucer itself, essentially shrinking it to the size of the saucer we see in the underside shots of the central hull. I'd move the nacelles to the rear, beef the stern up just a little bit and make it just a tiny bit longer and then mount the nacelles there, maybe even with some variable geometry action. I'd tuck the lower hull and deflector section a bit closer to the saucer as well. It's just a little too 'beer belly' for me as it. Not much, but a little nip/tuck would work fine to fit my personal aesthetics. The upper hull design used in the thumbnail is overall a better saucer. But yes, as one ship designer to another, those are my thoughts.

1. EC Henry videos always make my day! 2. F*****ing cool design! Just amazing! 3. Finally someone recognized your design talent and hired you! I really hope this is a stepping stone to studio work b/c you deserve it! I'd kill to have you as art director in a Star Trek or Star Wars series/movie. Can't wait for that to happen!
