Get in, losers, we're talking Freud. This video is a grownup talking about grownup topics (including sex and horror) so maybe put on headphones and minimize the window if you're at work!

Cribbing heavily from Zizek's The Pervert's Guide to Cinema, I talk about how TV and film reflect and direct our desire through gaze, portrayal of the supernatural, and through just plain old sex. I discuss a number of TV shows and films, including Netflix's Sandman, NBC's Hannibal, Netflix's You, Hellraiser, It Follows, and the only movie I am embarrassed to talk about, Mary Reilly. There is also an extensive examination of the unsettling hotness of John Malkovich. I also talk about movies he's been in, I guess.

1. This got SUPER DEMONETIZED hahaha. But I tried to approach it with maturity. 2. Wasn't aware I was this into John Malkovich, but we learn things about ourselves every day. He was a cutie. 3. Malkovich Malkovich. Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich? Malkovich.

I feel shipping has to be older than the 60s. I refuse to believe that there weren't Sherlock/Watson ships back in the day.

Hahah, oh, probably. I am not sure there was a whole organized COMMUNITY over them, although I'd be delighted to be wrong.

Well there were at least plenty of instances of authors rewriting other peoples work, or out right adding OC's (don't steal). Lancelot is one notable example, from arthurian legend. Even got shipped with Guinevere eventually.

Certainly, but I think collapsing all adaptation into fandom does a disservice to both adaptation and fandom. What fandom does is emphatically not contiguous with Milton!

@@QualiaRedux Fair enough. Seeing as our modern conception of fandom, is only possible with faster than horse back information transmission, and high rates of literacy. Just like how sharing the Spock and Kirk ship was possible only with the cheap mass production the photocopier allowed. I doubt a 15th century book binder would waste precious paper and ink on gay erotica, except when a very wealthy patron gave them a lot of money to do so.

Absolutely! These changes in how media is made and reproduced shape what we can produce and consume, which in turn shapes us!

Great video. I've recently been on a bit of a classic vampire novel kick (carmilla, dracula, powers of darkness) and it has me thinking about how the vampire represents so well all the destructive impulses we have to ourselves and others. The vampire has since been turned into the sexy anti-hero, but one of the things I liked about the villainy of vampires in the old novels is that it expressed a fear of our own desires by compartmentalizing them and projecting them onto a bloodsucking other.

This video definitely came on the tail end of an All Vampires All The Time kick.

I don’t know what it is but longing is preferable to fulfillment in my opinion. Maybe it’s because once the relationship is consummated there’s the possibility of disappointment.
@QualiaRedux
@QualiaRedux 2 года назад
That's certainly a very human thing to feel. I think at this point in my life, longing is a little bit too painful. But I am prone to it, so I watch media about it. There's, of course, the incredible Tim Kreider quote: "If we want the rewards of being loved we have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known." And it's hard and you can disappoint people and it will end someday. But man, it is nice to rest with someone for a little while.

This was a thoughtful breakdown. I completely agree that it's more interesting to use film to reflect on the power of filmmaking and story to encourage a specific reading than it is to do something confronting and then blaming the audience for accepting the framing as given by the author.

Yeah, if people pick up on the author’s intended meaning, no point in yelling at them!!

Ngl: when you said "gaze" I heard it as "gays" and was like, oh wow, the desire for lgbtq+ representation in media is so big it gets a whole category, that makes sense 😂😅

I used to be a moderately popular writer of fanfiction and people would send me presents in the mail. Someone thought I would like a sexy mug. I do, indeed, use the sexy mug.

When I was in middle school, my parents wouldn’t let me watch Dangerous Liaisons. Fortunately the local video store would give you a membership if you had a learners permit, so I rented it on my own and scrambled my little brain. I had already read the novel and was a voracious reader of historical romances, so I just really got hung up on how this story had so many of the same beats but went to very different places. Also everyone in the movie was so hot, and the movie seemed to be about sex, and yet it was so cold despite its intensity. I tried to build on this in the hopes of tying it more explicitly with your points in the video by talking about what an excellent and disconcerting presence Malkovich is In the Line of Fire, but I was just kind of flailing about the depiction of deviancy, so I’ll just say this is an excellent video.

Oh, he is TERRIFYING in that. And yes, Dangerous Liaisons definitely feels very remote and alienated. Again, about desire, not fulfillment! lol

wow I forgot all about this movie. all I remember now is "he came out of the darkness like he was made of it." totally spaced on all the horniness when I first saw it, probably wasn't in the headspace for it at the time... reckon I'll take your advice and NOT rewatch it tho 😊

@@QualiaRedux never realized how right you are about John Malkovich til.you said it though... "the guy you're alarmed to find attractive" was it? Even in Space Force I thought he was magnetic in a way I didn't want to admit 😆

great video! you put into words so many things I've thought about yet struggled to describe. I was also reminded of the many comparisons often drawn between the horror and romance genres . I know it isn't easy or profitable to post videos focusing on sex related themes on youtube, so thank you for taking the time to do this despite that!

There's also the topic of witholding pleasure or consummating the object of your desire. The fact that you can basically enjoy the witheld desire in your own imagination, concocting scenarios around what it would feel like is part of the experience, and I could recon, it might be even more enjoyable than the act itself. A lot of people I talked to who have experienced limerence (which is characterised with this obsessive, very romanticized desire) told me that a large portion of their obsession was fueled by enjoying imagining scenarios and coming up with features about the object of their limerence, even if those were unrealistic or in clear conflict with reality. It was basically like writing fanfiction in their head.
@QualiaRedux
@QualiaRedux 2 года назад
Yeah, like I say, if it's consummated it's not desire. I'm not sure I love the term "limerence" because, while it's a real word, it tends to just be a nicer word for "obsession." It's sort of a pop culture word for people who wanted a nicer word for it, not a clinical one.
@joshuahitchins1897
@joshuahitchins1897 2 года назад
@@QualiaRedux I also prefer obsession because of the dehumanization and objectification built in, unifying it with the same desire you would have over an object or a task.
@Mnemonforempress
@Mnemonforempress 2 года назад
@@QualiaRedux, thanks, I actually didn't know that, I thought limerence was an actual clinical term for the kind of unrealistic obsession with a real person.
