48TB in a HP Desktop DC7900 is unusual, to say the least. I did this with a Adaptec RAID 5085 8-Port External SAS RAID controller with 2x SFF-8088 External connectors. and the NetApp DS4243 w/24x Disk Shelfs for either SATA OR SAS drives.

Even just 1$ a month, comes out to the same as Binge-watching all of my 500+ Videos every month.
My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

Is it possible to attach a disk shelf to any pc, workstation, or server with the Adaptec asr-5085 raid card, the Netapp ds4243 storage shelf, and the mini sas cable? I have a Dell Proliant t5610 workstation I wanted to add a storage shelf too and learn to do networking and server management on but I have no idea what is compatible with my computer.
@MyPlayHouse
@MyPlayHouse 3 года назад
Yes more or less,, there are many other raid and HBA's cards that might do as well of a job. Link the LSI 9208-e is popular for this.

@@MyPlayHouse Thank you for the reply. I'm looking at emc or a NetApp storage unit to connect to my workstation. I guess these drives are propietary and are formatted to 520 bites a sector and need to be formatted to 512 with Ubuntu. I want to get a shelf that is 3.5" but they are expensive compared to a couple 2.5" ones Im looking at. I want the shelf to be complete with 2 controllers, 2 power supplies, and the caddies to fill the slots. I guess the caddies need to also have a connector for the hard drives to connect to the backplane. So my intention is to get a complete shelf because getting parts here and there is difficult and costly. There are many brands of shelf's and drives. My intention is to buy sas. Once I format the drives in the array, will my computer see the storage shelf and all the newly formatted drives or can I not simply chose any shelf and any hard drive? Are these shelf's and drives considered jbods until they are connected to a raid controller or server? Essentially are these shelf's and drives universal and connectable to any computer as long as it has a raid controller?

Hi, may i bother you asking something ? Im actually doing exactly the same hardware stuff, but, those disk shelf can actually use the 2nd controller on the raid card ? Like, you use only 1 controller and 1 cable. If this top controller dies you wouldnt see the drives anymore even if the bottom controller still work. When i cable both controllers, my raid card see double of the disks instead of dual path to them. How do you fix this ?

Forgive my ignorance but I noticed that there was a drop of around 3TB between total drive size and usable space. I know a little bit about required system files and NTFS formatting inefficiencies at scale but ~3TB of lost space seems excessive. Am I missing something?

I recognise those cards, when I see them, I have not seen while card and I know that 6xxx series (first 6gbps) is with blue radiator holder, almost same as here, but blue instead of yellow. Yellow is used on 2xxx series and 5xxx series, 3xxx may use either blue or yellow, but I am not sure on this (yellow). I suppose you have ASR-5085 (it is marked as ASR-SIE5 S - series, I - number of internal ports, E - number of external ports) to now we have following series 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 2 is basic 3gbps (consumer grade, low end) 3 is mid range 3gbps 5 is performance high enterprise grade 3gbps 6 is basic 6gbps 7 is performance 6gbps 8 is 12gbps

Hitachi(HGST) and Toshiba S drives are the most reliable.(Having thousands of disks running in multiple datacenters. Seagate and Samsung are the Worst. Western Digital(WD) is a little bit better then the 2 mentioned above. In SSD’s Intel and Crucial are the clear winners. Never buy Samsung EVO’s the PRO versions are way more reliable and only cost a few € more. Still not as reliable as Crucial or Intel.

My PlayHouse so am I right in thinking that by all u need is a disk shelf full of drives powered by 4 cables and then one qsfp to mini sas cable that plugs into the hba in the desktop pc / server and then it can be used normally like is the disk shelf essentially a big capacity hard drive seeing as the disk shelf it’s self isn’t controllable?

Hi Shane Singleton Yes,, might be the "SUN" part of the controller,, A "gift" from SUN-ish that raid 5 and 6 is not safe enough,, but then raid0 ?? Thank you for watching! :-)
@thingyee1118
@thingyee1118 7 лет назад
Shane Singleton its due to amount of drives probably
@Shane-Singleton
@Shane-Singleton 7 лет назад
Could be But If I remember right a friend's array. (Using a totally different Areca raid card) was able to do 40 disk RAID 5-6. Granted RAID 50-60 is better for redundancy AND speed over pure redundancy but I wonder if it's an issue of the card not being able to spread parity over 24 drives but able to do it to two sets of 12 in parallel due to the smaller amount of cache needed? *shrugs* I love RAID 5-6. lol.
@BenThatOneGuy
@BenThatOneGuy 7 лет назад
Depending on the card, some manufacturers didnt support more than 10 drives for a raid 5 or raid6, and in their user manual advised if you wanted those options to make multiple raid pools. I know that was the case with my Dell Raid Card, but when i got an LSI card (which was much better quality) it would let me do any options. Good video though, I am really enjoying your channel! Cheers!

Hi BenThatOneGuy Yes RAID0-5 and 6 is not recommended in big setups with "big" disks like 2TB,, I do wounder why Raid0 works,,, well :-) Thank you for watching! :-)

Wow this is great stuff. Having 2TB Hitachi in there is actually quite Viable :O Normally it is hard Justifying running a shelf because of energy consumption per capacity - for example i have a MD1000 with a Dell 2950 MkIII which has 2x 146(?) SAS 15k boot and 14x400GB SAS 10k as Storage. Running a Raid 6 or Dual Raid 10 is just really not worth it unless there is mission critical data. The MD1000 is insanely Loud and suck up up to 750W per PSU on Paper (really uses about 318-460W). Having 24x2TB in a single or Split Pool is significantly more Viable.

RAID11 is the way to go for people who don't like Linux there is Linux Mint 18.2 where you don't have to use the terminal unless you really want to but the terminal is really the more powerful means of getting the very best out of Linux but GhostBSD is Opensource UNIX because it is UNIX as it was rewritten to get rid of the AT&T source code.
