That final verse on Fire Drills is a jaw-dropper. And I was intrigued by Good Grief from back when it dropped, where she seamlessly blends her rapping and singing. I really enjoyed the album myself as well, but I didn’t expect this score from you!!! Love your in-depth interpretation and review on this album, one of my favourite album reviews you did since I became your Patron. 😀

Would you say that this album has the Edgar Wright effect in that you uncover more with every listen? Because if so... shoot, I thought I immensely enjoyed this album the first two times I heard it before this review dropped but if I listen to it more and more then it might become one of my favourite albums of all time. Might even top Tourist History by Two Door Cinema Club which I never thought could be possible.

An easy 8 or 8.5 on first 2 listens, though i don't know if it will go higher then that.. but Dessa always delivers and I am happy to see anyone promoting her or being as excited by her releases as I am.

I only heard "Fire Drills" and I liked it a lot. Looking forward to hearing this though. Especially after this review.

Dessa (and all of Doomtree) is really good. 'Ethereal' is not pronounced how you think it is.

Hmm, I didn't like "Jumprope" at first but I think I like it now. I definitely do not like "Good Grief" but that is more because it bores me than anything. "Ride", "5 out of 6", "Firedrills", and "Velodrome" kick all kinds of ass. God damn I love those so much. The album almost lost me at the end when songs kind of got the slightest bit repetitive but the album is only 37 minutes and that is really a strong point. I started counting the amount of genres she was hitting by about half way through the album and damn she hits like 8 or 9 prominent genres by the end of this thing. This was a nice blend of different styles into a well-rounded piece. I am not going to give a score because I didn't hate any of it I just loved the first half of the album so much more than the beginning and I do not know what to do with that. Is that a flaw, I'm not so sure.

After a couple of listen. I do like this album. She is a great rapper show on Shrimp (I’m pissed that that song is only 45 seconds. If it was a full song it would’ve easily been the best of the album) Plus the lyrics are very detailed and insightful. Only downside is I’m not crazy about her voice (especially as a singer) but the flows and lyrics make up for that. Strong 7/10 Best: Good Grief, Shrimp, 5 Out Of 6, Jumprope, I Hope I’m Wrong Worst: Boy Crazy

I think Dessa is an incredible artist, even if not everything she’s done has necessarily been for me. Looking forward to checking this out.

You are definitely fanboying, I love Dessa too but 10 is too high, 8.5 Id give it. I was also worried about the turn towards pop but she pulled that part off great. But this record has some flaws.

Yeah... I like this album, but I find it hard to call it 10 out of 10, because the difference in quality from song to song to be quite stark indeed. I mean, "Fire Drills" is easy the best song of the album by a longshot that delivers a feminist message I actually don't mind due to how well structured and detailed the song is, while I can't help feeling methodically bored by the generic hook on "5 out of 6" that does nothing to bring the energy or the fire of the verses with production that doesn't work for me at all. Overall, feeling like a seven out of ten, although it might change over time. Won't ever be a ten out of ten for me though.

Unless Marianas Trench somehow manages to find a way to top the musical masterpiece that was Astoria, this will easily be Album of the Year.

I'd give the album a 6 out of 10. Devics and The Beeps (the group that made the album Music for Awkward Situations) did this style a lot better. She looks like Samantha Fish on the album cover.
