Sam Hunt - Southside - Album Review 

I'm gonna quote what Mark said immediately after he gave The Click a 1/10: "Unless Sam Hunt comes around to somehow break the spacetime continuum by putting out a worse project, by far the worst album of the 2010s." Sam Hunt waited until the next decade.

When I saw that this actually released, I said to myself “I would be so disappointed if Mark Just relegated this to On The Pulse” luckily my prayers were answered

Just started the review and Mark begins by praising Sam Hunt. Mark is gonna kill this poor man isn't he?

"Sam Hunt - Southside - Album Review - Pop country / Bro-country / insult to human decency / proof of the failure of capitalism and corporate radio" I don't think I could put into words how accurate that statement is.

We have a lot of the same thoughts on the generally joyless sound of this album, but there's a part of me that finds that kinda cool (or at least distinct) I guess. Been editing this afternoon and kinda scared to post my review after seeing this, but yeah, it's def a weird album. Keep going back and forth on whether it totally sucks or is kinda brilliant.

Your description of “Sinning With You,” reminds me of what you said about “I Won’t Give Up.” Also, I remember when he said “Unless Sam Hunt breaks the space time continuum by putting out a worse project, by far the worse album of the 2010’s.” This review lived up to the hype of the end of your AJR review.

I came back to watch this for some light fun and I genuinely forgot this album came out this year. 2020 has been so goddamn long.

I like that Spectrum Pulse's 1/10 rating is colored red compared to any of his other ratings.

I actually Tweeted Sam Hunt after "Body Like A Backroad" and "Drinkin Too Much" and told him for his own sake to not complete his album. He DM'd me and not only asked me what am I doing to be successful in music but what I was remotely doing to enhance the country scene on a mainstream standpoint since I know so much..... I shit you not, I've been confused from that day on

OH BOY I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS REVIEW FOR YEARS!!

"Hard to Forget" is easily the worst song on the album, so naturally it became a single, started gaining momentum on the radio, and crossed over to the pop charts, peaking high enough (#26) that it may very well make the year-end Hot 100. And here I thought "hot girl bummer" wouldn't have any competition for the #1 spot on my worst list. And to think, if Hunt had continued to pursue a football career, we may have been spared from his shitty brand of country.

Sam Hunt gave us an album that we can all collectively crap on during the middle of a pandemic. This man could, quite possibly, be a legend.

Sam Hunt is the Nashville version of the guy who peaked in high school. Good looking, athletically able, vaguely charming; but never had to develop a personality, intellect or skill set outside of what he started with.

Seeing a 22-minute review on Sam Hunt in my feed got a big smile from me. Here we go.

How to create a Sam Hunt song. Lyrics that are emotionally manipulative but also embarrassingly asinine.. Incredibly lazy “sing talk” flow for the verses. Slide in some acoustic instrument behind him (maybe branch out with a trap beet or drum machine. Don’t forget the massively over compressed hook. Rinse and repeat

I haven't even heard "sinning with you" but from the lyrics you said and after looking up the rest of the lyrics, I hate it lol From a religious perspective, since he claims to be, he sounds like either a horrible Christian (or whatever denomination he is) or he haphazardly threw together lyrics with a religious theme to appeal to the "country" audience. These lyrics are fascinatingly bad. They fail on every level. "His grace and your grace felt like the same thing to me" 1. What exactly does he do with God? 😟 2. It's kind of wrong to say a person is equal to God

Part of the problem some women aren't getting the radio push is that they are too accepting of the situation rather than being leaders. Three things that all artists can control is writing their own songs, owning the publishing rights and playing live (or doing live recordings) which is where the artist is going to be making their money. They have to remember two things about labels. The first is labels are loaning money to artists and they control the accounting books. The second thing is that 90% of the promotion money goes to 10% of the artists on their label. Talented people should be looking for the best deal possible even if it's working for a foreign label such as Mascot Records.

I've been looking at the reviews to this album, Pitchfork gave it a 7.5, Rolling stone gave it a 3 and a half stars and EW gave it a B+. I'm confused as hell, cos I simply can't find one redeemable quality for this album, it's just so bad yet all these reviews are fairly positive.

Not watched it yet but the thumbnail and length tells me it's gonna be good.

The album was just boring. There was no kick or excitement

I'm a fairly big Sam Hunt fan, I don't think the album is as awful as you're suggesting, but it isn't great. I like Body like a Background, 2016, Hard to Forget and Young Once, the rest are rather meh

It's scary that you predicted in 2017 with your The Click review that Sam Hunt could be the one to make an album just as bad as that one, if not worse.

I haven't even heard the full album yet and I already know it is bad because it has the garbage song body like a back road on it.

I remember saying Back Like A Back Road was the worst song in 2017 so I don’t know why I even listened to this album. Other than two songs this album is pretty bad.

I've really never been bothered by Sam Hunt. While his music isn't great, it doesn't really offend me like it does for Mark. Yeah, "Body Like a Back Road" is definitely a questionable song, but it didn't really stick in my mind that long. I can at least say it's a somewhat catchy song. Maybe I've just got weird music taste since I genuinely like The Click (yes, I said it, feel free to kill me, Spectrum Pulse fans), but my personal low when it comes to music is super scream-y, shouty, insufferable death/screamo metal. You know, from Five Finger Death Punch and bands like that. THAT is my absolute least favorite music, and any kind of music like that, to me, is what The Click or Southside is to Mark. You know that piece of media that the critics hate, all your friends hate, and everybody seems to hate that you just don't hate, and can't bring yourself to hate? Well, that's where I say I am with AJR or Sam Hunt. Except I've never been into Sam Hunt outside of a couple songs. But any kind of loud, unbearable shouting that any screamo singer does is more insufferable to me than anything close to what AJR has made, who I still feel like are incredibly overhated and who I'd argue are actually good. I guess some critics feel like they're doing a noble good by tearing apart a piece of media that they HATE and feel a sense of righteous indignation when they tell you how much it sucks (just ask Mr. Enter and his thoughts on The Emoji Movie, modern Family Guy, Over Two Rainbows, or any review where he was bloodthirstily angry). I can tell Mark feels that way here since he wishes Nashville radio wasn't playing Sam Hunt and hopes in vain that this review will convince some people not to listen to this (which I know some of his fans definitely won't). Of course, some people still will if they genuinely do like the album, which I think is perfectly fine. It's just a difference in opinion. I'm not going to tell Five Finger Death Punch fans that they can't listen to FFDP. I personally can't stand them, but if other people see something out of them (like I see out of AJR), good for them. No point continuing that conversation any more.

A 1 and a 10 in the same year? Damn.

Well... At least Southside had a "best song" compared to The Click not having any. Not to mention that Southside actually listed the worst songs, whereas The Click had so many they couldn't be listed. So I guess Southside is marginally better than The Click.
