In this video, I take you on an in-depth look at Norriego Point in Destin Florida (post-restoration)... both above and below the water. I start by showing you how to get there and I also provided a convenient Google Maps link below for easy navigation. Once I arrive at Norriego Point I show you the beautiful surroundings including the beach, swimming areas, seawalls/jetties and dunes loaded with sea oats. We spent the day there yesterday and it was amazing! We snorkeled for several hours and saw so many different kinds of 🐠 . My favorite was a vibrant purple and yellow/gold (my UNA alma mater colors)! Right before we left, we saw 3 sea turtles! 🐢 🐢 🐢 Your videos are how we found out about this spot so we are very grateful! Actually our GPS took us to the wrong place (the Boardwalk area with all the restaurants) so we relied on your video to get us there. (TIP: Turn across from the Target and follow directions on the video. Don’t rely on GPS!) Also, parking was VERY competitive. We had to drive back and forth for quite a while before we found someone who was leaving and we had to download a parking app to pay for the parking. -It was all totally worth it for a gorgeous spot on the beach where we could snorkel for several hours in that beautiful emerald water! 🐠🐢 🏖

@@MelleLouiseMusic, I see that you posted this comment five months ago. If you haven't been there yet, if I may give you some advice, do NOT go on a holiday weekend! Traffic is horrendous (stop & go, stop & go) and you won't find place to park. My son and I went this past weekend (July 4th weekend) and had to walk a LOOOOONG way to get to the beach on that peninsula, after we FINALLY found a place to park (at an apartment complex). I plan to go back next year also, but have decided to not go on a weekend either.

I dove the East Pass jetty and finger for decades since the 70's and used to get stone crab claws from stone's under the biggest rocks at the jetty base 30 feet down. Haven't been back down in over 12 years now and man have they made NP into a destination compared to the spindly sandspit that it used to be! One thing you didn't mention about snorkeling NP and/or diving the EP is to definitely do it during high tide when that sought-after, clear, emerald ocean water floods the Pass. And if you wait about half hour past high tide, you'll be in the slack interphase between high and low tide with no current, which is especially nice (and safer) for children to enjoy. Conversely, low tide floods dirtier bay water into EP and makes it less enjoyable and more turbid all the way around side from currents heading out the EP. Thanks for the great memory of such an iconic old place now much improved!

Love the manatee, met one at Egmont Key one year. The park rangers watched very closely as my son and I got into the water to check it out. NO TOUCHY! Just got back from Key Largo and Key West. The reef was amazing with lots of life including some very big Barracuda. In Key West the brother n law and I went snorkeling and saw a shark, no wait he saw a shark I was already back on the boat with the underwater camera. UUUUgh. It was about 15 feet long that is until you talk to some of the rest of the group that saw it. reality checks it at about 6. still I missed it !! Love watching your vids.

Haha.. thank's so much. The life guard didn't tell us the manatee was coming by until it was too late to suit back up so I ra down the beach to get a quick peek. We have been planning a keys trip for awhile and kept getting canceled. We're planning to go next summer. 😃🐟🐬🐡🐠🐢🦀📸

@@thetoneman The drive from Key Largo to Key West is so beautiful and so boring, can I say it like that? Worth it though. Fort Zachary Taylor is a great place for sunset and also has some jettis there. Didn't have time to snorkel them though. Next year hope to be back near PCB we'll see.

Great video. Went to Destin the last of June into early July 2021 and this is one of the spots the paid snorkeling tour took us to. Great place to see lots of fish. Just be careful with the current beyond the rocks into the main channel.

Keep in mind, you can spend a week in Destin with merky waters full of seaweed and sargassum. It is not this clear every week, and can change overnight

I think we start the next phase of the restoration in September. I love all the underwater footage. I really need to take some. There were so many jellies at crab island this past weekend and I had my baby so I decided against exploring too much.

Thanks for the great video.. we are anxiously awaiting our vacation this coming week and this is definitely a spot we will be visiting. Question though how far deep did you go? Or was it shallow? I want my kids to experience this but I'm afraid it will be too deep for them.

Welcome! Thanks for watching. The swimming areas are shallow and gradually get deeper out to the markers... great for kids. On the other side of the swimming area markers and jetties the water is much deeper and there is a strong current. Be very careful.

This is the best snorkeling video I've seen (i have seen a lot) we are visiting in March. Do you think its possible to enjoy the water temp with a wet suit? If so, what kind? REALLY wanting to enjoy the snorkeling

Thanks so much... that means a lot. March water temps average about the high 60's (same as Florida Springs). You should be fine if you have a high tolerance to cool water, but if not then you could get by with a 2mm to 3mm rash guard or wet suit. Marine life may be scarce due to the cooler water but you may still see some sea turtles and a manatee if your are extremely lucky. 😁

I prefer the snorkeling reef at Navarre Beach. There's just something about the water there... maybe because its furthest from a bay. Although, you can get great days at the Pensacola snorkeling reef too. 😁👍

Hi there 😁. If you want a worry free snorkeling excursion with water transport and snorkeling gear included... I recommend "Destin Snorkel" facebook.com/destin.snorkel?mibextid=ZbWKwL. I have my own snorkeling gear, and the areas I snorkel in Destin Norriego Point and East Pass jetty are all accessible by car and a short walk, so that's what I do. Norriego Point has a strong current outside the marked swimming areas, but kids would be safe to snorkel around the jetty rocks inside the swimming area. The East Pass jetty has a larger snorkeling area great for kids, and it is nearby also. If you go without a snorkeling excursion, you would need a car and your own snorkeling gear.

Hi Toneman. We are in Destin October 9-16. Is this a good time? Water temp is 81 degrees. Is there a certain time of day? Son is 8.5 years old. Decent swimmer. Should we stay within the markers? Thoughts? Like your videos.

Thanks David! The currents can be dangerous and I suggest wearing a life jacket/snorkeling vest. Also I would say children should stay within the markers. I find it is safer to stay near the jetty where the current is not as strong. The weather/rain has made water clarity difficult, but the best times for snorkeling are 2 hours prior to high tide. I was surprised too... gars are very interesting. They can tolerate salt water and water with low oxygen levels because they can breath air with their swim bladder as well as use their gills. 😁👍

I wasn't scared 🤣. I didn't have my snorkeling gear on when the manatee came by and it was going super fast... against the current even. I just grabbed my GoPro camera and ran ahead just in time to stick it in the water to grab that shot. 😁👍📸

Yes, the parking lot is small, but there is additional parking along the side of the road as you get closer to the parking lot. It's best to get there early for the bests parking spots. The walk is not far, but it's across sand which makes the walk a bit more difficult (check it out on Google Maps satellite view). There is a concrete sea wall that goes beside the building and along the water which is easier to walk on.

July is a busy month for tourism but in regards to water conditions for snorkeling the weather and tides play a big part in water clarity. You want calm conditions and snorkel 2 hours prior to peak hightide for typically the best snorkeling experience. 😁

We will be there the week after the 4th. We have a hotel right on the harbor and are taking our boat with us. Would it be frowned upon to anchor by that jetty so that we can snorkel instead of driving there???

Not at all... people pull there boats up near the jetty to snorkel all the time. You can even anchor on the Gulf side of the jetty but you will need a dive flag to snorkel on that side. Have a great time! 😁👍

Yes, very good chance you'll see sea turtles. Make sure to check around the jetty rock walls and rocks on the sandy bottom near the walls. I would not recommend swimming out into the pass at Norriego Point or the East Pass Jetty due to the strong currents and boat traffic. You would have a better chance seeing dolphins at one the local snorkeling reefs in Destin/Fort Walton or Navarre Beach but not guaranteed. I've personally not see dolphins up close while snorkeling but others have so its possible. Some excursions in Destin and Panama City Beach will take you out to see dolphins and some will let you to get in the water to take pictures. Have fun and let me know how it goes. 😁👍

There has been alot of rain lately which causes the water not be clear especially during low tide. High tide yesterday was at around 9:49 AM... best water clarity would be prior and up too peak high tide.

I'm personally not aware of specific businesses that rent snorkeling gear. But most dive shops, boat rental, and snorkeling excursions businesses rent snorkeling gear... Google the Destin area and call some businesses to check. I would also consider buying snorkeling gear from Walmart, Target etc. then you will have the gear to use next time you visit and may not be much more than renting. Amazon is also a good place to buy snorkeling gear.

@@masongot4772 you're welcome. I recommend using fins in the pass.. the current can be strong especially when you're swimming against the in-coming tide. I usually swim along the top of the jetty rocks against the current some distance and then ride the current back. 🙂👍

The best time for snorkeling is 2 hours prior to high tide. Tomorrow morning will be great since high tide is at 11:00 AM and high tide for Friday and Saturday is at 9:15 AM and 8:45 AM respectfully. 😁👍

@@belypet Destin high tide was 12:15 today and will be 12:55 tomorrow. Idealy yes, two hours prior to high tide but it doesn't hurt to be early. I was out at Norriego Point today at 8:30 and was probably in the water by 9:15 and water clarity was very good. I saw a sea turle as I got in the water. 😁👍

Phase I and Phase II started in 2017 and completed in 2018. Phase III is still pending start date. Phase III of the Norriego Point Restoration plan will include access improvements such as public restrooms, picnic facilities, showers and drinking fountains, educational signage, an ADA shelter, additional paved parking, and a boardwalk around the point with three dune walkovers and a bird habitat.

How strong is the current over there?

It can be very strong depending on the length of time between tides... at slack tide the current is its weakest... it is the peak of high tide and low tide as the tide changes from high tide to low tide or vice versa. I check the tide charts and stay near the rocks until I get a feel for how strong the current is. Have fun and be careful. 😁👍
