In this video we finally complete the long process which is the final painting before 51412 goes outside to await her partner's external restoration. This was a particularly long process due to the learning curve we encountered when doing the cab and driver's side, both of which needed extensive sanding and 2 coats of gloss over this to ensure the brush marks from undercoats and primers were adequately smooth, giving the best possible chance to achieve a silky smooth top coat, this was not needed on the back and second man's side as we had learned our lesson by this point. As well as the long tiresome task of painting we also started work on some of the more intricate parts of the corridor mounting plate, meaning another long task was completed, paving the way for more of the corridor fabrication to be done in the next episode, enabling a refitment of the corridor in its entirety can in future episodes.

The 117 donations page is linked here: paypal.me/Mich... Every little help as restoring an old unit like the 3 we have is a massive undertaking both physically and financially, so anything you can give is massively appreciated.

@@colinsmith6280 Many thanks for the kind words. It’s nice to see 51412 get to this point and to know that after years of waiting patiently 51370 is just around the corner!

I always look forward to your updates. Progress is looking seripusly good Any comments on roofing materials and techniques? As well as your own, I've been watching clips from Blodge and Maespoeth to Ropley and it seems roof coverings are tricky, with the damage from water ingress on any stock a 'biggie'. I'm guessing what works on wooden bodied stock ain't necessarily going to work on a 1950/60s metal bodied DMMU.

Many thanks for the comment and we are glad you enjoyed the video. As for our own roofing techniques we use Jotun pilot acr on the roof which is oil rig paint so it should stand the test of time all being well! For wooden bodied roofing a good lorry curtain material would work nicely and last a good while!

Good to see the restoration progressing well, been following for a bit now. I think it would be a good idea to put tarp over it while it is stood outside assuming you have some? Correct me if wrong or whatever

Thanks for the comment, we are glad you enjoy our content. We plan to put 51412 outside without a tarp to prove its water tightness and that she doesn’t leak. She will remain like this while we overhaul 51370s bodywork the units will then have mechanical work and testing before interior fitting and once ready for traffic they will have a final paint job with numbers and logos etc applied then enter service on the MNR.
