In this video, we make a proper start on the second man's side of 51412 by ripping out anything that must go, from porous panels to ruff roof repairs and a lot of framework, and begin the process of restoring the integrity of the second man's side while starting to reassemble the first of many panels that are being replaced, along with the stripping and painting in pea green of any panels we've identified there are no problems with.

Thing BR did with the MK1 stock was realise that the doors themselves were stressors of some considerable potency esp when people would open them hanging on pressing downwards force versus all the other inherent vectors that a carriage would be subjected to and a lot of this stuff was built onto wooden frames which made the whole carriage "box" somewhat tender whereas the steel framed ones were much stiffer hence why SR MK1 stock was less clanky than everywhere else as Eastleigh/Ashford reused a huge amount of the ash frames from older EMU units with some of the SR's EMU stock running about on pre WW2 undercarriages whereas the rest of BR was mainly on all steel frames. Saying that, six NEL/Gri undercarriages which were steel, survived as rail carriers to this day so got to give the builders their due.

Thanks for the insight on how things were done it’s interesting to see all the different ways in which BR used to build rolling stock

Very effective use of the internet to publicise and promote your project. Absolutely fascinating to watch the progress you’re making, and well done for being so open and honest about the learning curve you’ve had to climb. Keep up the good work!

Great work guys I'm enjoying watching the progress. I understand the doors on this unit are aluminium is that correct? It seems that they've not had any rot like the rest of the steel has suffered. Would there be any advantage to using more aluminium during the restoration? Could you use it for the panels or is it not suitable? It's probably more expensive but could save a bit of weight and obviously won't rot like the steel. Thanks for any insight.

Thanks for your comment and sorry for the delayed reply! The doors are indeed aluminium which is why they have fared so well. (There had to be some benefit to owing a unit that rots easily with lots of doors lol) instead of rebuilding with aluminium which could affect the weight of the unit and crash worthiness, if money was unlimited rebuilding it with stainless steel would be the best option for her to last longer. Hope this helps :)
