Destination: Frankfurt am Main 

Hundreds of years of architectual development led us to the point where we turn down modern buildings and recreate medieval ones... I like this.

I've lived in 7 countries , and Frankfurt was the friendliest city I lived in. Vastly underrated. Your videos are great, thanks.

I lived in Germany for six years and grew to love it. I don't think you can really appreciate Germany unless you live and work there. If you are going for a vacation or short visit it doesn't give you the time to understand why life is so different than the United States. In Germany you can learn to relax and enjoy what Europe has to offer. Can't wait to go back again.

This is a fascinating discussion. But I don't know what to take from it. I've met Americans who love Germany, Americans who hate Germany, Germans who love America and Germans who hate America; as well as Americans who wish they lived in Germany and Americans who are glad they don't, and Germans who wish they lived in America and Germans are are glad they don't.

Frankfurt is often being underrated for being ugly or just a cold business town. But actually it firstly has very beautiful old parts and second the connection between the old and the new world makes it especially interesting and worth living.

Now we are in 2018. No more converted trams as U-Bahn cars. All platforms have a consistant hight. The reconstruction of the Altstadt including a lot of houses alongside Braubachstraße is almost finished. The ECB near the Ostbahnhof and the greenspaces around are in use now. The old Henninger Turm was torn down and new one stands at its former place. ... time for a remake of your Frankfurt feature. :)

Thanks for the video. I lived in Frankfurt's Ostend from 1984 to 1995 and worked as graphic artist in ad agencies. From my window I had a direct view of the Grossmarkthalle. The Main was a 5 minute walk away and on Sunday I rode my bike along the Main to Hanau, across the bridge and returned via the other side. I liked Frankfurt's good connections for hashisch. I spent many evenings, listening to music and toking up.

Great video. Thanks. Myself, I fell in love with my hometown Frankfurt the first time I revisited it after I moved to Canada 3 years ago. It appears that you must walk away to be able to see the beauty of something.

I was in Frankfurt this summer and for me it was the best part of my visit to Germany. The thing that surprised me the most is that it is a city about the same size as mine that has shops selling almost anything you could want in addition to skyscrapers and a metro; the features I would usually associate to much larger cities.

It's interesting to see how the city has changed in the last six years. There are three new skyscrapers and a part of the oldtown between Römer and the cathedrale was reconstructed and even some ugly buildings next to the opera house were demolished and old buildings were reconstructed at the same place. The surrounding looks much better now.

@alameachan Frankfurts U-Bahn ist offiziell keine Stadtbahn -- ob diese differenzierung rechtfertigt ist, ist eine andere Frage, aber z.T. fahren Züge, die eher typisch für eine U-Bahn sind; außerdem ist bei einer Stadtbahn auf Strecken die StVO zu beachten, was in Ffm nicht der Fall ist. Ursprünglich sollte das Netz komplett als U-Bahn umgebaut werden, scheiterte aber wegen der zu hohen Kosten. Echte U-Bahn-Netze gibt's auch in München und Nürnberg, alle (bs auf Ffm) mit Stromschiene.

Das Stadtbahn-System findest du im Ruhrgebiet sehr häufig, und es wird immer noch gebaut. Dortmund und Bochum haben erst vor wenigen Jahren die meisten Straßenbahnlinien im Innenstadtbereich unterirdisch neu verlegt, während am Stadtrand immer noch oberirdisch gefahren wird. Und Oberleitungen sind hierzulande das vorherrschende System. Stromschiene hast du meines Wissens nur in Hamburg und Berlin. Die sind nämlich auch nicht der Weisheit letzter Schluss und für den Straßenraum auch ungeeignet.

In a few years you can make an update on this when the Dom-Römer-Project is finished.

Ich bedanke mich für's hochladen. Besonders gerührt war ich bei 3:30, als ich bei der Zeichnung der Innenstadt sah, dass mein Geburtshaus damals schon stand. Nein, nicht DAS Haus, in dem ich vor 70 Jahren meine Kindheit verbrachte, sondern ein uralter Vorläufer. Diese Zeichnung war mir nicht bekannt, ähnliche schon.

@drewnetwork You didn't notice some of them were horribly shaky? Maybe I'm being too hard on myself, but this really needs to be re-edited in my opinion. Preview in my video editor brought my CPU to its knees, so I didn't notice until after I'd rendered it, which took 2 hours on the fourth attempt. Apart from that, I'm quite pleased with it.

You didn't metion the zoo and the very famous Senckenberg- Museum. But maybe you can make up for it with a special about the zoo, the museum and the pit Messel, (which is related to the museum and after all, UNESCO World Natural Heritage) nearby Darmstadt ...

America is never boring or has never been boring and will never be boring; it is just that when you live in a place for a long time it tends to be boring that is why we explore. There are many Germans who wish they were living in America.

It runs pretty smoothly, just not quite as smoothly as most systems in other German cities. The problem really is that the plans were overly ambitious and were only half realised, resulting in a system that works, but is a bit of a nightmare to operate.

@rewboss I spent last week with some "DP" who uses a monopod exclusively for the purpose of adding shake to his videos. People tell him it makes his video seem more alive. So, no, I didn't notice any shake. I don't know what editor ("NLE") you use -- but I recently tested something called proDAD Mercalli -- and it was the most effective software stabilizer I've ever tested. It's a plug-in available for a range of editors.

I got there in 1979 21st replacment us army stationed in wiesbaden for 5 years .......those 5 years were the best time of my young life miss it to this day 21st replacment was in frankfort thats the place where they told you what company your going too thats gone too now everybody goes to ramstein air base ........

Im an American.. I love my country.. But we are failing, fast... Germany and bits of Asia are the future.. Frankfurt will become the financial capital of the world.. Germany controls Europe and will eventually get the EU so centralized, that the German government will decide EVERYTHING that is done on the continent.. I'm rooting for Germany and would love to live there

+rewboss to correct you about the u-bahn... i dont nothing about the history of frankfurt, but a system between subways and trams is normal in germany and mostly planed like this, its called stadtbahn and perfect for citys like frankfurt. there are just 4 citys in germany with a real subway, but much more with stadtbahnen, its a typical german thing and works perfect in citys between 250.000 and 1 million citizens. and its normal too that stadtbahnen mostly uses tramwagons and i must say, the public transport in frankfurt and the whole region is very good in my opinion.

Interesting to see. Today that are old pictures. Pictures from the past. The city grow very fast an changed his face.

This could've come straight from the television! Great! (you complain about shaky camera - but it is understandable as you were following a moving object. you never cease to learn, do you?) Also: If you ever make it to Cologne - let me know. I live there(here?) and would enjoy watching you work. There is a tram/underground railways system in place here - but it is all for one kind of tram and very well organised. Allthough the sentence "Wir bitten um Ihr Verständnis" is getting somewhat dull XD

Well, they didn't exactly ask to be bombed during WW 2 did they? I'm a native Mainhattaner and I love this city! It's just very unique to Europe with that kind of architecture. And I don't think that they're copying America, since the skyline has it's very own, unique architecture. Zeil is the perfect place for shopping and I just love the business at Main Station and Hauptwache during rush hour. It's like a little metropolis! It's not the most beautiful city, but it's not ugly either.

Missing Frankfurt

I don't fully understand what's wrong the the train system in Frankfurt. I had easier times getting around there than I do Chicago.

@rewboss Wenn du mich fragst, hat so ziemlich jedes Konzept seine Nachteile - und so ziemlich jeder Verkehrsbetrieb seine planerischen Leichen im Keller. (In Essen z.B. eine Stadtbahnlinie, die an der Stadtgrenze im Nichts endet, weil die Gelsenkirchener sie nicht mehr wollten.) Und solange dem Individualverkehr fast immer der Vorzug gegeben wird, wird das wohl auch so bleiben.

hamburg and munich is much more expensive. berlin is the cheapest. cologne is relatively cheap also. frankfurt is not expensive, but not cheap either.. ;)

I like it, that you mention public transport often in your videos. Many TV-documentations don't this, althought ist an interesting part of urban live. If someone is interested in creating a never ending discussion, try to show a frankfurt citicen, that his town has no undergruound, but a stadtbahn - you can even show hin the VGF-Site were operateror write, they are experts in Stadtbahnbetrieb - he won't belive it. endless discussion... but fun! *gg*

I think Frankfurt is the 3rd most expensive city in Germany (after Munich and Hamburg). I ain't sure though.

Frankfurt is nice. The only downside thing is the high level of crime and beggars, and it's quite dirty to be blunt. The skyline is perfect and it's good starting point to visit neaby cities like Mainz and Wiesbaden. Cheers.
