You hit the nail on the head with this video. Teaching HS Health, we covered videogame addiction and the first note was how devs utilize tactical reward systems akin to gambling. I uninstalled D2 with the release of Lightfall and have been able to enjoy games I've been neglecting.....Bungie is the closest to Ready Player One that any dev team has ever come. Great video, Renn and thanks for increasing its coverage, Cross! 👍🏾

Here here. I keep chasing after what I found and experienced in Destiny 1. Season of opulence is the only time I found what I was chancing for and that’s when I I got addicted again and I have been chasing for that ever since. I feel the reason I still play today and am still addicted is because I know destiny 2 can provide what I’m looking for unlike before i simply couldn’t find it.

Small anecdote. I went to high school with Renn, here in Nevada. He featured our city multiple times. The DUI counseling is on Wells Ave. (Don't ask me how I know). Renn and I were in very near grades. I did not recall this man until seeing his face just now. I'm gonna be honest, my memories of Renn are only filled with kids picking on him due to his solitude and he rarely spoke. (Also because he looked exactly the same here as he did when we were 15, a 30 year old man.) As a shy person as well, I only spoke with him a handful of occasions. And I'd have to say I'm really impressed, with both Renn and how small this world really is.

I was addicted to D2 but once I realized how 1. I wasn't having fun chasing items, 2. Once I got those items I just vaulted them shortly after, only to chase the next item. and 3. how much money you have to spend to experience the game, I just quit. I realized why I originally played video games, and that's to have fun. D2 is just made to keep you playing, not to be fun

The addictive qualities of this game have been well documented back to Destiny 1 days. Some redditors on the Subreddit did a deep dive on it a little while after D1 came out. I forget the specifics, but I believe Bungie consulted specialists in the field of addiction and gambling to help formulate their reward strategy.

I’ve broken the bad relationship with Destiny but I can’t say it was by choice. Life went on and I grew up, and a lot of my friends stopped playing. I’ve still been able to keep up with the game and have fun, but not grind out every activity or get the items I want because of that. But, it’s a choice I’ve finally been ok with after a long time and it’s definitely been a better experience for me 🤣

At the time I’m writing this, I’m now a 2nd year college student and still play consistently. I do play other games too, but I have not found a game that gets me hooked back on so easily as Destiny does.

I don't have friends that enjoy the Destiny grind and will ask me why I still play. Show me a game that delivers an experience comparable or better than destiny, and I'll be the first one there. Warframe was close but wasn't really quite there for me. Sometimes the game goes stale. But then just try playing a different class with a different exotic and the game will feel new again. Idk if I'll stop enjoying doing GMs and carrying people who think it's impossible

Exotics engrams don’t feel special anymore cuz most players have all world drop exotics unlocked. Once you obtain a weapon, it’s yours forever. You’ll never lose it. You can pull it from collections. As for armor exotics, most players also have great rolls that make multiples a waste of space. It’s not that they’re not special anymore, it’s that the majority of players have all exotics and multiples are just a waste
@GrandSekiza

@@thatoneguy2136 I don't really agree with that there were tons of exotics that everyone had in D1 that still felt exotic. Problem is there's more ways to break the game in D2 and so Bungie tries to reign shit in more. Trials is boring. I never understood why or how people enjoyed trials. Not judging, can you explain to me the attraction of trials vs other fps? I honestly just want to know. I always seen Destiny PvP as an amplified Advanced Warfare. You literally just had to play the magic to win. Whoever is best at manipulating the magic wins. Weapons aren’t scaled fairly. So when people say gunplay, it’s just impossible to be true.

I've got 1165 hours in the game, watched all of Byf's videos to learn everything I could about the lore, etc. But over the past few months my addiction has been fading rapidly. Lightfall really bummed me out, and despite the story improvements from Season of the Deep and Season of the Witch, I'm finding it really hard to stay interested in the game. The seasonal activities are an absolute slog, chasing god rolls feels pointless because I already have really solid builds for all my characters, and I have no desire to go after new seasonal weapons because most of them are mediocre at best. For months I used to play the game every single day and hardly touched anything else, but now I play the game maybe twice a week. I'm probably gonna quit after The Final Shape.

I think I used to be addicted to destiny, but after some time I realized a lot of the things that Renns brought up in his video, like the whole casino thing. It's not just in Destiny, it's in most looter shooters; that idea of "spinning the wheel" to try and get that perfect godroll, that one perk you're missing on a gun, that one item, that one armor piece. There's just always gonna be that one thing you're missing, and no matter how much time you spend to get it, they're just gonna replace it next season with something shinier and newer, so I thought to myself, "wtf is the point." I still log in to destiny from time to time to check out what's new and I probably still for the forseeable future, but I refuse to let it or any other game designed to make me forget about my life control me anymore.

It felt like a drop in early D1, where you had something trully special. I dont know how put it into words, but if you kniw, you know. Exotics NEED to be hard to get, NEED to be a ultra rare drop, because this way, they FEEL exotic, like Ghally once did. (im not saying to make them overpowered, but like Aztecross said in the other video, make them unique by doing something you cant get other way in the game)

I come back to Destiny usually at the start of a new season. If there’s a new raid out like Crota, then I’m locked in to playing the game. But as soon as I’ve run the raid a few times, that satisfaction I was chasing is completely gone. And that feeling fizzles out faster every return. Being a longtime player means I have great guns and most of the raid exotics, and there’s not enough for me to come back and chase the whole season. I think live services have overstayed their welcome, and for a lot of gamers like me, we’re just not buying in anymore. It’s one of the main reasons I couldn’t buy Diablo IV when friends asked me, because I knew it would be the same. I’m glad there are so many good games like Baldur’s Gate, Hades, RE4, Street Fighter 6, etc. coming out this year. It feels like games are becoming fun again, and those games continue to highlight the flaws live services contain in their system.

Yeah I just sort of quit playing when I stopped having fun. There's no point in coming back all the time to grind that god roll or that exotic or whatever, if you're not going to enjoy any of it. At some point, watching a number go up isn't enough to keep me involved. I don't really get how people can get to the point of playing constantly when they're not even having fun. Just do something else, eventually you won't even miss it. I quit playing after finishing the Witch Queen campaign and every time I think about coming back, I remember all the things that made me leave in the first place (and the fact that most of those things have gotten even worse since then doesn't help.) I've never gotten to a point with any game where I feel "addicted," even with some of the most infamous "addicting" games out there. If I feel dread every time I log on, I just... stop logging on. Mod system needs to be experimented with a lot more. Everything got stale so fast when lightfall dropped, the difference between most people's PVE builds is if you generate orbs on melee or grenade kill. I could play around for ages with pre-lightfall mod system, incorporating wells into teamplay, ability gen, etc. I understand that dumbing down the mod system is helpful for new players and making the game less intimidating, and we might be stronger than we've ever been in current sandbox, but god mods are so underwhelming right now. Would appreciate some more buildcrafting options, it's all been shifted onto the subclass and picking an exotic.

Destiny 2 player progression is a beautiful thing. When you enter the game, you have a sense of excitement and exploration. Then soon you become committed. But eventually you realize that not only are you committed, but you are not satisfied after you're done, leading to FOMO and addiction. Finally, years down the road, you find that dream clan where you have met great friends to play with after work/school. You complete all content and love to do so. And that and only that is when you realize that you're not addicted because you are missing so much, you are addicted because it's your social lifestyle. It becomes fun. That is where I am now, 4 years later. I'm ok if I skip a week and play Minecraft with my clanmates, because the content will always be there. That is unless there is a rotator or event or Iron Banner or something. But you get what I mean. I'm addicted to Destiny 2 not because I need more, but because I have fun with friends that I love. :)

Bungie said "if we overdeliver, we fail" but the reality is, Bungie underdelivering, is a bigger fail. They've not only made me hate the game I've loved for nearly 10 years, but they also have made me hate themselves. I refuse to buy Marathon, or any other title under their development. And I'm ending Destiny 2 with Final Shape. I'm already this close to the end of this saga, I'm just going to finish it, and say goodbye. I'm not starting the next chapter of Destiny 2. I'm not touching a Bungie product again. And I'm not getting treated as a fool for wanting to enjoy my passion of gaming by a developer, again.

I was formerly an addict to D2. but with changing circumstances in my life I had to cut back, do some soul searching. I tried some other games. I played Vermintide 2, and a little of Deep Rock Galactic. They had very similar grindy lootbox and season pass systems. I looked at how much there was I 'needed' to unlock and I got disheartened. Watching this video helped me realise a couple things. When I quit Destiny to go play the Mass Effect Trilogy, I noticed a LOT of similarities between the two, but, at the end of a few missions in ME, I felt satisfied that I could call it a day. same with the story, even though ME3's endings were... controversial, i still felt satisfied. like "Yeah. that was a good game." Destiny (2) never really did that for me. I am much happier not playing it anymore. I still keep up with the lore via Vaati etc. still watch the occasional funny kill clips/videos. Overall, I'm a happily retired D2 player.

Its funny how people are still trying to label gaming as an addiction. Its not your just playing hours and hours and hours to grind on a game you enjoy. And honestly destiny doesn't take that much to reach max level. Its the raiding and going for perfect god rolls on guns thats the grind. Right now the game is in a state where its going to be the same thing for a while for a couple of years until a new raid or dungeon comes out, thats pretty much the only real change. Thats when i come back to destiny 2 is for new raids. I even take breaks from destiny 2 and still catch up. I can even grind out an entire season and stop. Dont think its an addiction, addiction is just an excuse for peoples bad habbits.

Everytime i play destiny and see a event i am like ah i will get it later i dont feel like anything is going to be exclusive and i don’t care anymore, i know that you will probably pick it up later and that you don’t even have to earn it, as in trails iron banner i hate that system either you had to be there or don’t that was the unique feeling when someone asked you how it was to get that set of gear or weapon, but now a days bungie killed the urge so bad. The Problem with Exotics is, they are not really random anymore. Most if not all Exotics drop from e very specific activity or even quest. like Legend lost sectors, you go in there with the expectation of getting an exotic, and after only a couple runs you´ll get something. New expansions ad way to little axotics that just drop randomly ... you get them via a quest or lost sectors. And now the Vex encursion allows you to stock up your missed exotics too, i got all but 1 Exotic that i was missing on my main from Vex incoursions instead of playing the aktivity i needed to. and the Vex Incursion drops an exotic everytime ... Wehn a new expansion ads like 5 Exotics we get 1or2 from the campaign and the rest from Legend lost sectors and maybe even 1 for preordering ... how should an exotic drop from a random mob, that cant even give you something new, feel exciting if at most its a better roll of something you allready have? We need like 10 Exotics for the Final shape and we get 1 weapon from preorder and 1 weapon from the story mission maybe and the rest should be fucking random drops and legend lost sectors have just a higher chance of droping something. right now you get the new exotics so quickly that random exotic drops are worth nothing. (Except for better rolls of curse)
