It's my favorite NES RPG, and I think a remake would be amazing. I think a RPG set in Three Kingdoms China would be really unique today. The only genres that really use that setting nowadays are strategy games, and Musou (Warriors) games.

Guys, simply try Destiny of an Emperor - Rise of Leyasu (NES Hack). Verrrrry solid hack. and at least twice as difficult as the original! But every hardcore DoaE player should give it a try!

This was one of my favorite games growing up and it's good to see it get some love. Insanely underrated game from the NES, and one of the best RPGs on the NES, beaten only by Dragon Warrior 3, and maybe Final Fantasy in my opinion. The most memorable things in this game were finally being able to recruit Pang Tong at a time when the rest of your armies were around 1500 troops and he had almost 4000. It felt good having such a beefcake in the party for a while, even though he never leveled up. I also remember one of the highlights being the An Sha tactic to assassinate enemy generals. If there was some big army and you checked your report and saw a dumb general, ezpz just assassinate that noob and let's turn this battle around real quick.

It was my first ever RPG beaten when I was like six and it introduced me to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games and novel. I think I'll remember this shit no matter how old I get. My love for this game brought me to your video. On 2:43 the "all-out" part, I believe they use tactics (at least the enemy generals I'm pretty sure) and you can hear it when they do. I remember some fights where my entire army got An Sha'd and I laughed it off. Please correct me if I'm wrong with this. Overall, awesome review and I learned more about this game. Thank you for sharing!
@NightSprinter
@NightSprinter 4 года назад
Oh, you aren't wrong about how only the enemy can use tactics when selecting "All-Out". Still own the cart my brother got in 1989 (was at an Electronics Boutique somewhere here in Florida), and I still get that feeling of dread whenever I have mini-boss encounters with anyone that has "An Sha"..
@zurgnut
@zurgnut 3 месяца назад
Having been An Sha'd one too many times myself I started using that tactic against the enemy generals. I even got lucky using it successfully once against Sima Yi. Instead of using Zhuge Liang as my strategist, as the game heavily encourages you to do, I used Jiang Wei instead since he had access to spell. And since Zhuge Liang has the highest INT stat (+5 higher than Sima Yi even), tactics had a high success rate.

Underrated is right. I loved this game as a kid. Also thank you for pronouncing the names correctly. I'm not Chinese or anything, but I have a lot of respect and reverence for basically everything Chinese except their government, and it grinds my gears when people can't be bothered to learn the proper pronunciation. And Jesus Christ man the fight you show at 1:45 sent me right back like 'Nam, have some decency.

IMO the greatest jrpg on the nes hands down. It is also one of the hardest jrpg of all time. Im playing though the second one right now, and it is on par with the original. Capcom was definitely on to something, but for whatever reason, dropped it. Fun fact: you can actually get to lvl 51 which makes the end game a shade easier.

I love Destiny of an emperor on the Nes. I've been playing it for years. I've played the sequel Destiny of an Emperor 2 on my Nes emulator disc on my Sega Dreamcast. Since it was never released outside of Japan, I had to play the translated Rom. I just recently just bought an English translated copy of Desinty of an Emperor 2 for the famicom. It's awesome to finally have a physical copy of the 2nd game that I can play on my Nes, thanks to my famicom adapter. Great review. I just completed Destiny of an Emperor this morning I really like this game. I like the DQ style graphics, the dialog, the ancient Chinese setting, the Music, And I really like how straight forward it is to get to the next area since this game is very linear. Though there are a few issues that I have with this game such as the random encounters since they are either non-existent or I would get into 5 battles after taking a single step. Having to constantly switch inventory when getting new items or generals. and some of the final fights lasted for over 20 minutes. But overall I am glad that I played this, and I wouldn't say it's that difficult but that it's very time consuming and the game did take me over 30 hours in-game time. But now I'm going to play other niche 8-Bit games such as Lagrange Point, Tao the way and maybe Shell Beast Story.

One thing I want to add to this, is that it seriously helps to look up a scanned copy of the instruction manual, or at least just look at the segment of a guide that explains what each tactic does. That will save a LOT of confusion for first-time players.

Very nicely made, well-paced and well-spoken review. Love to see content on one of my favorite RPGs still being made in 2018. I've played it so many times over the years, from childhood when I was fascinated by the concept of recruiting generals to adulthood when I was good enough to complete multiple challenge runs through the game. I posted a bunch for a stretch of time in college at the Kongming.net forums and have considered playing some of the mods of this game. I even wrote a so-so FAQ on GameFAQs for it, though I never did finish the overhaul draft of it that would've made me proud enough to actually recommend someone follow the guide, alas.
