Taylen and Wyatt Brooks loved doing everything together, so when a 90-pound male mountain lion attacked them together, they bravely tried to fight it off to try and protect each other.

@@Xane_Dragon Just for the record, I'm not saying I would fight the bear either. However, I like the real story to be told instead of caring about the feelings of the brother that left the other for dead. This was only one person who attempted to be a hero in this story. They didn't "fight for each other". One fought the other, that one then ran.
@@reactivereplays5666 Bro just for the record it was a mountain Lion not a bear. And you gotta fight for your brother others you are just another snowflake
The fact that these two young men didn’t have a weapon on them is crazy. Not even a pocket knife? Can’t imagine being the brother that survived either. That guy is going to think about that day for the rest of his life. RIP young man
ive lost a brother when i was around his age, i feel sorry for him but in this case your brother gave his life so you could live now you owe it to him to live a life happy and love filled enough for both of you.
At 90lb this was a young cat , more than likely more aggressive over newly acquired territory and possibly had never seen humans before, to him they were just intruders on his “area”.
They were experienced hunters from the area. I don't understand why they would go out with no self-defense. Nature is our master no matter how much we try to control it and destroy it.
Why would you try to control & destroy nature... animals can sense that shit as well as your fear. I've seen many a mountain lion in Sedona where I grew up. Cubs as well.. they want to be left alone.
Also he was an Idiot for throwing a backpack at it.. likely would've just walked away. I have been RIGHT NEXT TO momma and cubbies at 11 years old.. packs of coyotes as well as javelina(babies have suckled on my fingers while mom & dad stood there slowly sniffing the air to make sure I'm cool when I was 18)first thing you learn: don't allow fear to take over & don't get aggressive. These boys & most of you in the comment section only know fear & aggression towards nature, so they lost. So be it.

I had my own cougar encounter 2 years ago while gold panning on a creek on Vancouver island. I was lucky enough that I saw them ( there was 2 together) before they saw me. One was an older one with the black markings on the face, the other was a young one with no black on the face. I was panning on the creek behind a big boulder that partially shielded me from their sight. they came out on a fallen tree that went out over the creek and were looking around up and down the creek. I just froze in place since by bear spray was over 20 meters away in my pack and did not think I could get to it before they could get to me. Luckily there was a branch on the fallen tree they were on that partially blocked their view of my position and I was down wind of them as well. My only thought was to stay still as I know cats react to movement more than anything else. I am also glad I did not have my dog with me that day or things could have turned out very badly. The older one did look my way eventually but could not get a clear view because of the tree branch but did a head-bob trying to get a clearer view of me. They did eventually move on but I stayed frozen in place for another 5 minutes just in case. ALWAYS carry bear spray!!!
Bear spray? Are you trying to get people killed? You carry a gun ya dork. Ever hear a story where a guy was mauled after spraying a bear with bear spray? Yeah. Nuff said.
They had already smelled you bro, their scent is 30x what ours is. They were just not interested. They don't need to see you to know you were there, that's why he looked over, to make sure the source of the smell wasn't a threat. And if it was the older Lion looking your way, it's likely he had encountered humans before and knows the smell already.
I experienced the loss of one brother in 2017 and another in 2018. My thoughts and prayers are with the remaining brother and his family during this difficult time.
I hope this young man can move forward, this is an unfathomable tragedy, his brother loved him - that hasn't changed, he will be in your heart forever. Wyatt, be strong, your life is just beginning, you have much to give in the future. Stay positive ❤
In college there were two close frat brothers. They were in my class and were always so happy and had good vibes. One day tragedy struck one of the guys. The other guy changed completely after that. It was like he no longer saw sunshine.

A friend of mine and me were planting crops along a stream under the tree line cover in east San Diego county 14 years ago. A Cougar crept up on us as dusk hit. After it was dark, we could hear it using the sound-cover of wind blowing leaves to creep around; they're smart AF! After firing our shotgun at the direction of it several times, it still wouldn't leave and persisted us! We carefully hiked out of the treeline cover of the creek, and after we got to the clearing, it stopped following us. They're 100% fierce! I checked his tracks the next day and scouted him jumping down from a tree. Must've been an easy, 200+ lbs male. They're fearless, and no bullsh!t!!
Clearly they did not know how to deal with the situation and that is piss poor advice being given out. It won't protect or save you if the lion wants to attack you... HOPE is not a plan.
Same thing nearly happened to my older brother, he was armed though, and blew that thing away. Never go alone (even with a friend or family) without being armed. Nature will win. They have in this case. RIP
A couple of months ago(Northern California) I was walking home from work on a dark street at 1 in the morning. Something jumped out of the bushes near me and ran across the street. I said "what the hell was that"! I followed it across the street to get a look, it was a Mountain Lion! Needless to say a slinked back across the street!!

90 pounds, holy Jesus... You might think that's small at first but when you have a firm understanding of cat fast muscle twitch fiber strength and speed, the 4 inch teeth and claws are just like knives. Too bad they didn't have pepper spray or a pistol.
Was thinking this same thing how it’s crazy a 90 lb canine is easy to stop for an adult male with maybe only moderate injuries, their mouth is all they have as a real weapon where cats have deadly claws and are far faster and all like you say. A 90 lb cat is a killing machine
No it’s not. Many innocent animals will be saved now that they can’t hunt anymore. Truth is ugly get use to it I don’t care about your feelings I care about real victims and they are no real victims.
Terrible tragedy for the family, but those boys did their best....one saved the survivor. Just surprised they didn't at least have a hunting knife, let alone a pistol on them. Also, shocked the first group of cops wouldn't kill it on site considering it was over the body.
If there was any chance he was still alive they wouldn't want to miss or have the bullet go through the lion and hit the guy. At that point they probably weren't 100% if he was alive or dead. Last thing they want is to accidentally shoot him.
We have wasps in the Uk, they sting a bit, but you get over it! Walking, mountain biking, camping, and especially living etc etc in an area where, bears , wolves and big cats roam is pretty much beyond the wildest dreams of most British and European people! The closest we get to such animals is in a Zoo!
It’s crazy because apparently in the west you aren’t allowed to hunt wild mountains etc which would probably be beneficial to the environment if controlled. The west is wild
@@stephaniewalsh67 No doubt. Cali is my best friend in the world. I am not sure of her age, but she is most likely about 15. She used to be wild and feral. She is in great physical health and sweet as can be.
Something like this happened to my brother-in-law, but with a bear. My brother-in-law had a gun and shot the bear in self defense. The bear's pelt is now hanging on his wall.
R.I.P these young boys. Very sad for they're parents. I believe all lifes matter. Wild animals being killed in their habitat for being wild animals may bring peace of mind but its wrong. People can torture people to death and they still get to live. Yet a predator animal attacks in their habitat and they're killed. In the wilderness, there will always be that risk. You should be educated about it and always bring non fatal protection. There's plenty.
I think part of the reason is some recent articles and some "experts" saying things like "These animals avoid humans" "They are scared of humans " "They won't attack you unless you provoked them " "They do not hunt humans " "They are not that agressive" When people read or hear this it gives them a false sense of security and think they are safe going to the wild I'm not demonizing these animals but lets not forget that these are aggressive predators that can easily hunt and kill people
Hey, news flash- mountain lions are roaming the streets of cities in California, are all over rural areas, not just “wilderness”. They have killed people in Orange county. Hardly a wilderness.
I saw a mountain lion on the road to Mammoth Pool. It was every bit 12ft. from head to tail and it's head was as big as a beach ball. I was amazed at how big it's head was. They don't call them lions for nothing. There are enormous ones out there but you'll hardly ever see them....Until it's too late
I saw one on Cuesta Ridge, CA, north east of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This was in the 80s. I was driving, a bit after sun down and the ML was crossing the road in front of me, broadside. Head to tail, that thing occupied the entire width of the one-lane road. I suppose it was living on the prolific range cattle that roam those hills. Anyhow I couldn't help thinking an unarmed man would have no chance in hell against such an animal. Then I thought about how we would go traipsing through the nearby hills of camp San Luis Obispo all night in pitch dark as ROTC cadets, learning dismounted patrolling, laying down quietly in the brush, and so forth.
Oh my goodness. I feel for the surviving brother. As someone who has lost a brother, the trauma that he will experience is unbelievable. I hope peace accompanies him on his next journey in life.
90lbs? Thats as big as my brothers malamute and he’s a huge dog. I couldn’t imagine fighting an animal of that size with my bare hands especially one with more agility and larger/sharper claws than a dog. That takes courage. Rest easy, sir🕊️🙏
now we can ask god for something. what about when the kid was getting attacked? where was this god at that point? It's like you people don't know how to think.

As a kid and younger man I never walked or hiked with a handgun, but now I always carry. More for people with ill-intent than wild animals, but it can be helpful in either case.
My heart goes out to them. I have two young boys. 4 and 5 yrs. old. I found myself choking up thinking about their family and how hopelessly crushed they must feel.
MY GOD IM SO SORRY FOR UR LOST I HOPE THAT U CAN RECOVER FROM THIS... YOUR BIG BROTHER WAS PROTECTING YOU AN STILL IS.. YOU HAVE GAINED FEW BROTHERS IM UR BROTHER MY CONDOLENCES TO YOU AN YOUR FAMILY...
The cat would have probably kept going about his business had they not started yelling and screaming and waving their arms or threw their backpack towards it. Generally they don't act aggressively unless they're antagonized.... very sad all the way around.
I raised a Mountain Lion from a 6-week. cub. Mine got to 100 lbs as he was well-fed. Powerful animals. Big cats have an amazing ability to sense fear. I imagine its because I lived with my cat actually in my home, I've lost the fear of them. I've been around a few known to attack, but have never had a problem. But I've had visitors over that upset my cat the moment they walked in the room. I have no idea what makes big cats stalk some humans but not others. Something is triggered in the cat and they go into "prey stalk" mode with much confidence. I'm no expert by any means. though. Condolences to this family. Very tragic. I still would never go into the wild without a weapon.
I think that you are correct about giving off a scent of fear that upsets them. Dogs can sense the same too. Recently I watched a video of a news reporter out in the wilderness on a trail doing a story unrelated to mountain lions when one casually walked right by her. She saw it at the last minute but didn’t react to it so she had no sense of fear for it. It just kept going along. I do think the cameraman had a little anxiety about seeing it walk by her.
@randyboisa6367 it was the 80s. What can I say. You on X? I'll send you pics. I was fucking handsome back then too! Your life so boring you can't wrap your head around it...hehehe.
If they both had combat knives and knew how to use them that cougar would have been shanked to death in 30 seconds. Unfortunately most people don’t have the grit or skill to do that.
I was convinced about that 30 years ago by an article in Field and Stream, where a Canadian mother fought a cougar bare-handed for two hours, so her children could escape. When help came, she was still fighting. Once she knew her children were safe, she died. If she'd had even a Mora knife, I think she could have killed the cat in 2 hours of work. Unfortunately, California isn't much more friendly to knives than to pistols.
Man. This tears me up big time. As a man who has cried very few times in life, I couldn’t imagine losing my brother in this way. What a brave & honorable young man. Mountain lions are the predator everyone seems to forget about. But they are amongst the most dangerous. Be aware & bring a gun. This is why I still carry my .45 in archery season.

I detest Newsom and you are wrong. You can open carry in those rural counties and public lands in the woods in California; I’ve visited on many hiking trips and seen open carry in Trinity, Shasta, Modoc, El Dorado Counties lots of times.

Clearly they could've been carrying weapons if they chose to. Mindless anti-California folk need to inject this dumb politicization into everything. It's exhausting. I feel horrible for Taylen and his family, but was killing the mountain lion after he already ran away really necessary? I know they said they killed him to protect future hikers but technically us humans are in their territory when in the wilderness.
It’s California. It’s hard to get open carry. Love living in Tahoe but it is very dumb how hard it is to get an open carry. Especially with all the bears you run in to up in the high country..

Hunters can transport an unloaded, openly carried firearm to/from their expedition even in prohibited areas. This is Kelsey, CA - A well known hunting area... No one questions people carrying there.

A friend and I hiked near clear lake before and was stalked by a pretty big coyote. Stalked us for about 2 miles. It was not even scared of us as we would fake charge it as well and it would just look at us and stare. We didn't know if it was going to become aggressive but we sure weren't willing to find out. We kept a distance at around 100 yards but it was sketchy just stalking us like a cat. We threw rocks at it and he didnt budge. As we got to a angle where wind direction was blowing back towards the coyote, I let off a puff of my bear spray and it took off immediately. You just never know with wild life
Hi fam! Coyotes singing on Cow Mtn in the early am lately. Scary af story! Smart move with the bear spray! This is an instance where the regular spray worked better than the gel!
This is so sad to feel so hopeless you had to stop fighting to call for help. I feel so much pain for the brother that survived. He did what he could. That mountain lion came down from hibernation and was super hungry probably hasn’t ate in a very long time. This is very sad.
A mountain lion sees you long before you see it. A very sad tale of two brothers with outdoor experience, yet sadder still they had no effective means of defense against this mountain lion. I'm wondering if park regulations prohibited them from carrying less-than-lethal and/or lethal means of self defense, or if they just got complacent from their familiarity of the area. Airhorns, bear spray, walking sticks, sheathed hunting knives, and firearms are some of the items the brothers might have found useful to scare off this lion, but for some reason they became defenseless.
True, so I don't know if it was trying to eat them. They saw it, and it saw them, but perhaps they were far too aggressive trying to scare it off and it attacked. It was a young male cougar (and they were young men) so its possible that this was more of a "fight" than a hunt. Who knows. You wouldn't antagonize a big dog because instinctively you know it might bite you. But we are taught to be "large" and "scary" to predator animals, even if they aren't looking at us for a meal. That might have backfired for these young men.
@@Armored_Muskrat The advice typically given is to stand your ground, act large, wave your hands, roar, and slowly back away while facing it. Throwing objects at it (as they did) or advancing towards it is just as bad as being timid. Most people wouldn't do that so it isn't mentioned.
When animals as dangerous as mountain lions don’t fear man anymore, it means it’s time to open up the season! California is so liberal they won’t do it, to them, an animals life is more important than human life! It so sad and very tragic! Praying for the family!
How about just leave the mountain lions alone and only do what you have to do in order to defend yourself against them? Actively hunting them when they’re not doing anything is messed up. They are native species to the habitat and they are more beneficial to the ecosystem than we’ll ever be.
i think the news assumes people listening to it have common sense and understood they were not armed considering the only action they took before, after and during being attacked was throwing a backpack at it. Don´t get mad at someone else if you lack common sense, and an IQ higher than 0.1
*For those that are spreading misinformation* This was in El Dorado County where it is easy to acquire a CCW. Let’s not jump to conclusions and discourage other people from California by making them think they can’t get a permit
Thanks for being the one person to mention this. To add to your point, this happened on National Forest land where a state CCW is generally accepted outside campgrounds.
They were hunting and it was too. That's how it works. People can kill things and that's OK, but when an animal kills something, it is bad. Sorry this happened, but they should have known better. Humans are the real killers
When you watch a news section in which a young person have just died, and all you can muster up was "human are the real killers." Than theres something seriously wrong with you. Go live with the grizzly bears and away from human kind please.
