Join me on this detailed tour / documentary around a QANTAS Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet, VH-OJA, on display at the HARS Aviation Museum in Wollongong, Australia. This 35 minute tour includes climbing around the MEC, storage hold, cabin, flight deck and ending up next to the flight recorder.

Thanks for watching! This wonderful aircraft is on display at the HARS Aviation Museum in Albion Park (just south of Sydney) and everything I have done today including the tour with a 747 pilot, aircraft engineer and customer service manager can be done through the museum. Just make sure you book a week or two in advance as they book out quickly. Their website is www.hars.org.au

You can’t totally grasp the size of the 747 until you see it in person. Just by looking at its sheer size alone you’d never think that beautiful bird could ever get off the ground.

I worked for the now vintage airline, TWA. Though a smaller aircraft, I'll never forget the first time I pulled a jetway off of a 767. It was jaw-dropping! Unfortunately, by the time I transferred from reservations to the airport (1998), TWA had already retired the 747 and the L1011. 😔😔😔

I frequent the Frankfurt airport, and every time I take the shuttle bus from one terminal to the next. It's an inconvenience for some, but I love it, because the bus rides along ground level past the noses of mostly Lufthansa 747's and the A380's. A view from a terminal is cool, but nothing like seeing their massive height and scale at ground level.

Drawings for the sheet metal in the structure are done full size on mylar to facilitate making tooling. Keeping track of what location is being shown on the drawing and how the rearby parts fit together was a real mind bender.

I was born in 1958 and I used to live fairly close to Schiphol, Amsterdam. I remember the first 747s flying over. My whole family emigrated to the US in 78 and in 2019 my wife and I flew to Amsterdam in a KLM 787 and on our return to NY we got to fly on the 747-400 . My 2 dreams had been fulfilled. Flying KLM on a 747 just before it was retired.

Nice Tour!!!! I built the 747 for 17 years as a structural mechanic. It looks so nice when it is all said and done. So many people involved. Definitely a unique place to work. Rounded out my last 6 - 7 years with A.O.G. 14 countries and lot's of misery coupled with lot's of good fun. Worked with the best people I have ever met. When you were crawling forward in the nose, I kept saying KEEP GOING!! Go all the way forward!! Did a repair in Frankfurt, nose gear collapse. There were 5 of us up in the very front. I shit you not. Threatening to kill each other once we got the fuck out of there. No room for anything. Of course when we finished our 12 hours crammed in there trying to drill stringers thru new skins with zephyrs we all went and drank together. Only to do it again, and again. Loved it!!!

I had the pleasure of taking this tour yesterday, and the customer service manager did indeed tell us a story about a patron who couldn’t make it back inside the museum. Led to a rather uncomfortable day for the staff

Ahhh.. I was wondering why there were no doors on the lavatories. I guess it helps discourage people taking a b'room break on the tour. Of course if the actual planes had no toilet doors the attendants wouldn't have to worry about smoking or drug taking or making sure everyone has taken their seat during take off and landing.

I worked in a large manufacturing plant with several thousand employees. One of the men's rooms was undergoing remodeling and all of the urinals and toilets were removed. The entrance was securely barricaded, no doubt because otherwise there would be some guy walking in there and upon finding no plumbing fixtures, he would have just done it on the floor.

The manager, trembling with rage said "we'd be better off just hiring monkeys. Monkeys wouldn't do this kind of thing".

It just makes me so sad to see these icons retiring. My first 747 experience was as a small child my class was taken on a field trip to SFO. While there, they took us on a tour of a Pan Am 747. This would have been around 1975. I had the opportunity to sit in the pilots seat for just a few moments and I've been hooked on the 747 since. The 747 brought me home safely from both of my overseas deployments during my military days. I've had several other opportunities to fly on the 747 and they are all very good memories. Once again, I learned a lot from one of your videos. Thank you so much for the work and passion you put into your channel.

The 744, my favourite aircraft. I worked as cabin crew for 25 years, and I loved to work on them. All those hours spent in that crew rest somewhere over Siberia or South Atlantic or the Sahara Desert, or a quickie from BOS to FRA with a flight time of just over five hours with a super strong tailwind, so we had to push and rush the dinner and breakfast service through. Good times, I am grateful for. I wouldn’t want to do the job nowadays, anymore. But I have my memories, and all those stories we encountered up in the air, and downvote at the destinations. Buenos Aires was my favourite. Perhaps some viewers here remember that crew lounge in the hotel. All major airlines had their crews staying there. What a fantastic time that was, late 90s. Thanks for this great video.

Having been a pilot for 20 years, these birds bring back great memories. Hell, if the passengers I flew back then knew how hungover me and my co-pilot were from a night a-partying with the flight attendants in cocktail bars in dozens of different cities across the Americas, they would be stunned lock-jawed. Back then if I didn’t have a beer in my hand, it was always a Folgers black. I miss the eighties. Best decade next to the 70’s.

The 747-400 was the first plane I ever boarded for getting airborne. In 1994 I booked a journey / vacation trip from Europe to New Zealand, having never been flying before. So I went on a 27 hours trip, all on B747s operated by Singapore Airlines. Whenever possible I seated myself on the small jump seat next to the aft-doors and looked down onto the earth. I love this airplane, it's really the Queen of the skies! 🥰

One thing I alway found funny was by the flight deck escape hatch the little handle reels you hang onto when you jump out. There is a sticker on the side of it with 20 little dots. Every time you jump out and use it you scratch a dot off, after 20 times it needs overhaul. In 40 years I never seen one used.

"Now we'll start at the front of the plane and you can see the distinctive Boeing 747 hump in the front of the fuselage. The interesting thing with this plane, however, is that the cockpit is located on the second floor! Yes, that's right. This plane's cockpit is located on the second floor of the iconic Boeing 747." "Now flying the Boeing 747. Taxiing onto the runway, and lets do a full power takeoff. Alright now V1 and rotate, positive rate, and you can really feel the power of thos Pratt and Whitney engines." "And so that was the Boeing 747-400. And now it's time to give it a Doug Score. Acceleration was a little slow, 0-60 in 15 seconds so it gets a 2 out of 10. Handling is not that good, since the plane feels extremely heavy when turning. However it is very responsive to controls so it gets a 3 out of 10. Fun factor is high since flying in the cockpit in a 747 is definitely fun so it gets a 4 out of 10. Cool factor is very high since this plane is easily recognisable and is one of the most iconic planes in the world so it gets a 7 out of 10. Praticality is low, since the plane consumes a lot of fuel and cannot be parked in your personal hanger. However cargo room is large and there is seating everywhere so it gets a 4/10."

My FIRST airline ride was in this 747-400 when I flew to Hawaii in 1980. I sat on the port side of the plane by the window. While taxing out to the flight line I could see the long wing flapping up and down as the landing gear wheels traveled over the bumps of the tarmac. Boy, that mad me nervous. Later, I asked a good friend of my who flew for NW about those wings. He told me that is normal for any jets wings.

Back in 1997 i was flying with a friend on an Air New Zealand 747 Flight from Auckland New Zealand to Sydney Australia for the first time. We were sitting in cattle class and after some conversations with a flight attendant found out that the Captain was a train nut. My mate was a Locomotive Driver for NZ Rail. The Flight attendant conversed with the captain then came back to our seats to ask if we would like to sit up in the cockpit with them. We grabbed our carry on luggage and went upstairs. I remember seeing a small family in the "lounge" area they had before the cockpit as we walked past them. We ended up spending 3 hrs up there with the Captain asking multiple questions about trains to my mate. He kept pointing out things out the window with us peering out see what he was talking about. An awesome experience. They gave us headsets so we could hear their conversations. Unforgettable experience which in this day and age will never happen again. We were first off the flight too lol.

We have a friend who is a director of maintenance for a major US air carrier. He had always offered my dad and I the opportunity to come down to the airport at night and he would let us climb through anywhere on a 747 that we wanted. We could spend the whole night going anywhere we wanted. We kept saying we would do it and then 9/11 happened and the airport locked down and we couldn’t do it. I wish we had just made the time to go! Thank you for making this video so at least I could live vicariously through your tour. I will definitely check this plane out when we get to Australia!

I first flew in a 747 in 1974 ... I was so excited ... It was spectacular. TWA Chicago-Honolulu. Ten hours of goodness. Still mammoth today ... fifty years ago, imagine what it was like then. It was epic. In '74 TWA had actually 26" horizontal reels of film, projectors in the ceiling, projecting wide-screen. Coach had three individual systems ... screens being on the bulkhead wall of the galley areas. For sound, the "stethoscope" air tubes delivered the soundtrack to your ears (speaker in the armrest). It was so futuristic... mind-blowingly cool. (btw; The Way We Were, and Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean ... as a young man, way too excited to watch a damn film!)

My father flew the 747 for American Airlines. He also flew the DC-10. He loved to fly. On D-Day he flew four missions from England to France. He was 20 flying combat.

This is amazing, seeing such a significant aircraft being preserved. Here in Malaysia we have no preservation mindset - case in point, the first Malaysian 777, which flew the record breaking flight from Seattle to Kuala Lumpur eastbound, was unceremoniously scrapped. Luckily someone got a piece of it to make into commemorative airtags...

The nerd in me rejoices!! In 2008 I had a chance to play around in the Victorville boneyard which is northeast of Los Angeles, California. It was both thrilling and sad. I was able to walk around on some very iconic 747s and even walked on a 200 series which had recently flown in and been retired. I was able to see it before it was completely gutted. I've been lucky enough to crawl around in some lesser known areas but NOTHING compares to this well preserved example here. I've only flown on a 747 a handful of times, 4 times that I can remember. They are truly unique aircraft and it's nice to see this level of care and preservation. I would fly to Australia solely to take this tour in a heartbeat. Thank you for sharing all this with us. I’ve been wanting to fly on a 747 for as long as I can remember and every time we fly back to Germany to visit my wife’s family we book Delta but we’re flying Lufthansa this time and finally, as long as WWIII doesn’t break out, I’m going to fly on a 747. Last time we did fly on the new Dreamliner which was cool but it’s not a double decker.

Many years ago when I was 9, I was a passenger on one of the first American Airlines 747s. It was a surprise my father arranged for my mother and I when we were flying home from Los Angeles in 1971. I asked the stewardess if I could see the lounge on the second level. Unfortunately, it was for first class passengers only. She did tell my mother we were welcome to use the lounge at the rear of the plane. I had to use the rest room, so I did a little exploring. When I walked through the wall divider, I was shocked to see a lounge area with club seats, tables with chrome mushroom shaped lamps on them, and a full bar against the rear wall with a bartender. I quickly used the rest room, then went back to tell my mom what I’d discovered. At first she thought I was exaggerating, but I insisted she come back to see for herself. She was surprised, but we both took a window seat. My mother ordered a whiskey sour, and I had a Coke. We enjoyed our drinks looking down at the Grand Canyon. My dad was smiling as my mom and I exited the plane. He asked if we liked our surprise. I said it was the best part of our vacation. Unfortunately, it was the only time I flew in one of those beautiful planes, but I’ll never forget that day in August of 71.

Your video just reminded me of October 1993 my wife and I flew a 747 from Manchester (England) via Bangkok to Sydney. We travelled 1st class and returned early December 1993 Melbourne Singapore London and Manchester. Outbound from Manchester to London we were strapped into the rear 2 seats on the flight deck (crew changeover both ways). I will remember that trip for ever! Thank you Quantas.

Thanks for this tour! I have only flown on a 747-200 and that was back in, I believe, 1974 (back when they had Spiral staircases up to the flight deck). I was a kid back then, but the 747 remains my favorite aircraft of all-time!

Thanks for the in depth view of this very impressive aircraft. I’ll never forget the one time I flew in the British Airways 747-400 from Vancouver to London Heathrow. It is my favourite flying experience so far. I sat in premium economy, which did offer very comfortable seating, but it was the flight itself, especially how smooth the entire flight was, which made it so good.

Thanks for this super detailed walkaround of my fav commercial aircraft ever, the 747 is so beautiful and I love it specially for what it represented back when it was first introduced and how still is one of the easiest planes to visually identify and still fits in so perfectly with more modern ones.

Many thanks from Canada. I flew on QF 747s (including 747-100SP once) so I really aprpeciated the "full" tour. Now, when allowed again, I need to go down and visit this museum. Great to see the plane is kept in a state where equipment can still be powered up.

I will never forget the first time I flew on the 747. Also a 400 series. British Airways from LHR to LAX around ‘93. We got a free upgrade to business class on the upper deck. The size of the interior was impressive to say the least. Amazing experience.

Beautiful aircraft. I worked for Qantas for 32 years, catering centre in Sydney, been on this aircraft hundreds of times servicing catering on this baby. And used to love flying business class with my family

Years ago I taught at a university in China. I flew a 747-400 over and back from the US. It's an unbelievable amazing aircraft.

Such a special plane in aviation history the last 747 flight I was on. I was in the way back and we had some pretty ruff patch’s of turbulence over the Atlantic on untied airlines

I had the honor of a tour of the upper level complete with sitting in the pilot seat. It was what I call “the big B.A.” a British Airways 747. On a trip back from England I got a 747 to Philadelphia. When departing the aircraft in Philadelphia I asked if I could take a peek upstairs.the rest is only what I can say is a bucket list wish come true! Every pilot was so friendly and gracious not only showing me the first class seating but actually setting me in the pilot’s seat and explaining the controls! Yes! Yes! 😎😎😃🥰👏🏼A wonderful experience I will never forget!!!

Many memories of flying in these beautiful plane’s but my most memorable was 1996 from Osaka to London seated in the top deck and having to walk to the tail of the plane to smoke legally and still being able to order drinks in both locations! Those were the days!

THANK YOU for doing this. I've always LOVED the 747, and when airlines started pulling them from service, I started looking trying to buy a ticket to just fly on one. Unfortunately, by then the only routes left were intercontinental on major airlines so I simply could not afford to do it. It is incredible that you have one on display and even get a 747 pilot and engineer/mechanic to show you around. WOW!

The first plane my girlfriend ( at the time ) ever flew on was a Boeing 747 : 400. I took her from London to Mexico City ( and back again, of course ). I had flown a few times previously and at first loved flying. But by the time we were going to Mexico I had come to loathe flying and feared it intensely. My girlfriend loved the flight - whilst I hated it. `Still, I`m glad I did get to go on the plane everyone thinks of when they think of any passenger jet.

I had the pleasure of taking this tour yesterday after seeing this video some months ago before COVID shut the museum. I can’t recommend it enough, the experience was unmatched in terms of hands on experience with every aspect of the aircraft. Not to mention getting up close to the F-111, Mig 21, Mirage 2000 and Sabre in the museum. Great video Paul, and thank you for the inspiration to take the tour myself

Just loved taking off in the 747 the power in intitial takeoff is awesome my favourite part pushed u back in the seat been on a few the 1st time as a 12yr old was shocked at the size of the plane and wanted to turn around and not board this thing cant take off. One of my favourite planes i flew on. Came to Aust as a 1.5yr old on a Qantas 707

I am, was a ramp rat, 12 years.. Loaded many of these aircraft, and all the way down to a 19 seat British Aerospace Jetstream. fun days! thanks for the memories!!

I love this plane so much the body is such a classic iconic look. Really sad they don’t really fly commercially for passengers but you can still catch them flying cargo around the world. What a beauty!

Really enjoyed this, Paul! My first ever flight was on a 747 back in 1972! Flew on a few other 747's after. I call it my favourite aircraft!! Never realized how much electronic stuff was under foot! An amazing plane for the time it was conceived!

What a marvelous craft! I had the fortune of flying on many a 747 in the 1980s. Especially on the Pan Am "clippers" (it's how Pan American named their planes, Clipper of the Sea, Clipper Columbia, etc...). Once, back when security was much more lax than the paranoid times of today, I got bumped up to first class!! That was a memorable experience; I recall the stairway to the upper level, complete with free bar service, tasty foods and a lot of space to stretch out and relax. What a plane, the nickname Jumbo Jet was totally apt for this behemoth. I always wondered how it managed to take off...LOL The "magic" of flight! ✈

In my day I was in Combat Arms with the Marine corps. One of my side jobs was embarkation. Ended up going to embarkation school in Ft. Bragg north Carolina. It is amazing how much weight these 747's can carry. I've traveled around this world over twenty times, but landing in Oslo Norway was the scariest experience I ever had. 45 minutes to land, circling, and bouncing seemed like an eternity. When we finally landed, every one was shocked as to how this was even possible. The crew didn't even look stressed!

Happy to see they have kept at least one for their museum . Guess I must be old, as I distinctly remember hearing about this new airplane being developed. The 747. Now there slowly going away, I was lucky enough to have gotten a set of seats as well as window section of fuselage from OEJ. It was sadly cut up in Tupelo, MS.

What a brilliant tour through this beautiful old bird. It's clear she's seen better days taking all types of people for countless reasons up into the great blue yonder. How good was talking to the Captain and have him run through the flight deck with you? So very cool. Viva la Queen of the Skies.
