Detailing Jay Leno's Porsche 356 - Jay Leno's Garage 

I played baseball with Chris as a kid and he loved the car washes we'd put on to raise money. He just didnt want them to end. It was pretty crazy, he'd run one most weekends for fun and even during the winter he wanted me to help him put on a carwash. We lived in Minnesota and it would be freezing and he didnt care. Good to see him still washing cars.

I'm not going to watch a 23 minute video on washing a car... 23 minutes later: Wait, is that it? Nothing earth-shattering I didn't already know, but this video is just awesome. It is healing to see a car wash/detailing job turns a car from "please clean me" into "look at me!"

Clay bar and using a polisher has been extremely stressful to me and so I never did it, but now I feel better about it and will try my hand at it over the next few weekends....a sincere thank you to your guys and yourself for making this video.

The Porsche 356 Carrera 2000 GS happens to be my favorite car in Jay's collection. The video revealed a lot of important detailing advice that prioduced fantastic results. Jay looks slimmer.

As Jay said in a previous video, he most often just dusts off the cars to not put any water to it, but actually exactly this creates such terrible swirl marks.A wet car dried with microfibre cloth and then driven to dry out certainly will not be damaged by a water cleaning.

One of the most beautiful cars ever made. If you have a Ferrari 250 Lusso that'd be nice to see detailed, especially those borani wire wheels!

At 12:00 the Detailer mentions maybe going to a Body Shop to test the polisher on an old an old body part. That's a good idea, or you could do what I do, which is to test my polisher on my neighbors car.

I really enjoyed these videos. Those two guys are great and very natural on camera.

One of the best things about detailing your own vehicle is you can often catch little problems before they become big ones. On my motorcycles, for example, it seemed there was always a fastener or two working itself loose. It's mostly simple, mindless work, and for me at least, very therapeutic.

Of all the cars Jay has that’s my favorite. I have been trying to buy one for 40 years. Even when 356’s were affordable, this was a fortune and so hard to maintain.

I've been using your products for quite some time. I like them.

To be fair Jay, this process is easier said than done . The first time l used a polishing machine on my mk 2 M.G Midget way back in the warly '70's l left burn marks all over the place ! Back then it was T-Cut or Brasso and coarse cutting compound and very heavy , single speed machines . But practise makes perfect .....so they say ! Since then l've won many accolades for my restoration skills . And today we have a miriad of machines and polishs for all finshes . Thankyou Jay.

Maybe detailing one of the older cars from the 30s or 20s could be interesting. Especially with the bodywork from the era.

When I was in college in the early 1960's the 356 was my dream car. My first Porsche was a 1971 911-E which was a great car but today at 81 I would still like to have a 356.

Nice to see that they claimed that they would wash it before they do a paint correction rather than just "wiping it down" before polishing like they did on the McLaren. Maybe they just had a check up from the neck up to basic car detailing protocol. ...regardless to them justifying why they did not clean the McLaren.

Jay, would love to see a wash and detailing of a classic motorcycle. With its insides exposed, I’ve always found it more difficult than washing a car. Also worried there will be hidden moisture/eventual rust so I rarely wash. Thanks!

Products and techniques worked well; quite noticeable difference.

It's very helpful, and great job, I just hate putting machines on a finish, unless VERY careful and skilled.

If it was just dust, why couldn’t you use a quick detailer instead of using water? I use Maguires quick detailer on my cars for light dust bird droppings bug splats with a microfiber cloth and it seems to do a good job

First you say don't use dishwashing liquid it's harsh on paint, then you go ahead and use high pressure water gun at 50 psi, that would really destroy rubbers and all micro areas of windows, paint joins, and overall micro destruction of paint lacquers , opening up scratches . This fad of high pressure water hoses is one among many stereotypes of error.

Back in the mid 90s I would use Murphy’s oil soap for the older cars. It did its job for what for what I needed.

Any simple tips on cleaning the inside of windshield and rear window? Have used several products and still see smudges.

Tell you a funny story, Jay in the middle of winter in Michigan hi couldn’t seem to find a job because of a back injury so my brother and sister-in-law invite me down to Tampa to stay with them for a while and see if I wanted to move there so the first thing I apply to ads at Crystal polish place but my car was a 77 Monte Carlo, and at the time I was going to strip all the original paint off of it and paint it with white pearl lacquer so the hood and fenders and the front end has been stripped and I didn’t wanna paint it with something because I wanted the lacquer primer and paint on it so the car was silver originally so I rubbed it with WD-40 and scotch Brite and told people it was my DeLorean lol and me and this other guy who showed up for the job training, he had some kind of old MG that the paint was all blistered off of and I had my DeLorean and we’re at this big spiel from the crystal polish place it’s basically a car polishing business package that they sell you with buffers and everything but you can also go to work for other guys anyways, he goes is now let’s go out to your car and try some of this polish and restore that paint LMAO. I says we can’t he says why I said because there is no paint oh come on now there’s got to be somewhere around there. It says no it’s my DeLorean lol so we went out and he was kind of stunned and me and the other guy were laughing and then he went over and looked at his car is it looks like a red blister job and we just laughed but whatever they were using in Crystal polish was top-of-the-line stock. I had seen some of the cars around town that got had it and I mean they were immaculate but I still laugh about that story today and my brother let me keep my car in the garage because it was a DeLorean and it couldn’t get wet.😅😂😄 Every time it got some rust spots I would pull it out with the scotch Brite and spray it down with WD-40 and polish it back up. Lol My sister-in-law used to laugh at me because we lived in Carrollwood near this road, called DaleMabry, and I would call it Dale Mayberry like Andy of Mayberry Road so well living down here by Dale Mayberry lol and my brother would say you gotta drive like you’re crazy to scared people lol he says that they all get out of your way. OMG Tampa was hilarious. Everywhere we would go in his 76 Grand Prix. I would say we would go I see it. Are we going in the ditch today? Lol. And we probably were and then everybody would move out of the way we saw some of the craziest things in Tampa you drive to a slow neighborhood. Do you know where the speed limit is like 25 and you do like a ton and a half truck laying upside down in the middle of the road for a car inside of some guy’s living room smashed through the front window. It was just crazy but I could understand it because the liquor store on a Friday night looked like the unemployment line it went around the block.

Excellent "how to" video. I've seen others on this topic, but the explanations of the "why" for the steps is quite helpful. The specific multi-bucket technique and the comments on clay mitts vs pads were enlightening. As the owner of an older black Porsche this video was inspirational - just maybe I can get my car looking close to that good. Btw - did they wax the car? I am curious about Chris' recommendations about waxing the car, both materials and techniques.

Do you let different detailers detail your cars since you have so many ? Have you looked into dry ice blasting any of your undercarriages ? I would love the opportunity to come out and do one of your vehicles .

This is kinda funny for me, as a kid I got to wash some cars, mostly my moms, without having the slightest idea of what makes sense and what doesn't - and most of them did not look good neither before nor after, really. Looked better after, but not by a huge amount, the dirt was gone but then you'd see all the swirls and imperfections in the paint. Later when I had cars myself I never had the time, place or stuff to clean them by hand, so just a drive through automated thing was enough, when they got dirty enough. Now I'd have the time, but no longer have a car, nor would I be able to do any of this stuff, I'm stuck in a wheelchair. So it's all stuff I never did nor ever will get to do, but it's one of those things that are sort of satisfying to see anyway. In the unlikely scenario that someone asks me how to clean a car, I would have a sensible response: find a video of how pros do it and try doing the same 😛 good luck.

I was curious about how the paint correction is sealed/protected. Is the ceramic wax the sealant, or is the sealant a different product?
