Detecting Starlink Satellites With DIY Tricorder

I've found another use for the homemade Rasperry Pi tricorder I built last year. This time we're using the LNB from a satellite dish to pick up KU-band radio beacons from Starlink internet satellites! While we can't actually get internet this way, we can watch the progress of satellites across the sky and see recently-launched Starlink "trains".
The LNB I'm using is a "Universal" type, available here: www.ebay.com/itm/234269625431

Practical, fortunately, does not matter when it is interesting and fun. Friends and family are amazed when I tell them you can see starlink satellites. Usually they say they are planes. Until I spot a train of them and point them out in the sky. Not a lot of room to argue left after that. Pretty sweet idea with that SDR. I might have to give this a try during the next camping satellite watch. Thanks!

I know that this is an old video, but the big issue is that DirecTV (the LNB) that you were using is powered from either 13 or 18V depending if you want left or right circulation selected. They output in two 500Mhz blocks, A-band (1650-2150 MHz) and B-band (250-750 MHz) from the KU band signal in the 101 sats.

Hello author. Reminded me of my childhood. In 2007, not everyone had the Internet and we were engaged in "satellite fishing", intercepting Internet traffic on our dishes and recording the incoming content on the HDD. Sometimes they intercepted photographs of parts of the planet with weather satellites .... It was educational for us teenagers.

The reason why you received nothing on your laptop probably is the huge cable loss in the (compared to the handheld) quite long (and seemingly low quality) cable. Cable loss is quite significant at the very high frequencies in use. Try to connect the sdr-stick with a shorter and lower-loss cable. You can also try to minimise interference by battery-powering the laptop.

Hmm, Good idea. always looking for more things to plug into the RTL-SDR, pretty sure I have a few LNB's in the shed. would be interesting to have a few different gains (say one bare, as a basic dipole, then one with say a small yagi, and then the normal setup with a dish). could make finding some more obscure sats a bit easier? Also, I've got one of those Dell Vostro laptops I literally saved for parts. found it at the tip, sans battery, hdd, n RAM, but seemed in good condition. slapped in some random ram sticks and an old SSD, hasnt skipped a beat in years. from memory the best uptime I have seen on it was 104 days, and that was only cos I had to physically move it. good machine, right price. I also found a Saitek force feedback joystick that day, I was going to gank the actuators, but that worked once I fed it enough power and got the drivers. and is so much fun it managed to escape the parts bin affectionally known as my shed. Its about 38c outside right now, so I think I'll leave tinkering in the shed and try breaking parts off my mosquito by doing silly things. IL-2 is a great game.

@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts Год назад
There are (or have been) some KU internet satellites. When I lived in Alaska we had "Starband" that used a TV-style dish like you see on house roofs. That got about 500kbps downlink but only 56k-ish uplink so it was a little weird. It was a geostationary satellite so you had to very carefully aim the dish and lock it in place.

Maybe I can do a writeup on my website. I've stuck together a couple things here, the tricorder is an ongoing project using a Raspberry Pi computer and software defined radio (I have a few videos on it). The Starlink receiver is just a universal satellite LNB with a power injector (people keep asking where I got that, it's a generic / unbranded one from the local surplus store and you can also just use 9v batteries).

@@saveitforparts be aware those modern universal LNB need programming which is a DiSEqC Signal. A modulated 22 KHz signal upon the power-supply. It is used to switch the frequency-range as well as signal polarization. Older LNBs simply select polarisation by changing supply between 14V and 18V and select the band by continuous 22KHz signal. RASPI is able to generate both of course with some lines of code.
@paulsengupta971
@paulsengupta971 11 месяцев назад
@@greekstraycats The polarisation is still switched using the voltage. The 22kHz signal switches between the two local oscillators to switch between two parts of the band, hence the "universal" designation. @@saveitforparts I'm really sick of that reply. "No one's forcing you" How about respecting the spirit of the internet, dude? We can download pretty much every album, movie, video game, and book right now on the internet totally for free but you, some guy who presses record, thinks he DESERVES MONEY? Oh BOY I want to interview you in voice.
