Grabbing Images From New Russian Satellite (Meteor M2-3)

My last video on Russian Meteor satellites was pretty popular, so I did a follow up now that another satellite in this series has been launched. This one is brand new, going into orbit June 27th of 2023. It replaces the older Meteor M2-2 that suffered damage earlier this year and stopped transmitting on 137mhz.
I had a lot of trouble getting the signal from this one recorded and processed, and there are probably things I could have done better. What seemed to work best for me was:
1: Looking up pass times on n2yo.com
2: Recording the signal on 137.9Mhz during the pass, with a RTL-SDR v3, SAWbird-NOAA filter, and QFH antenna connected to a Raspberry Pi computer (timeout 15m rtl_fm -M raw -s 120000 -f 137.9M -E dc -g 48 -p 1 raw_dump.raw)
3: Converting that output to a wav file (sox -t raw -r 120k -c 2 -b 16 -e s "raw_dump.raw" -t wav raw_dump.wav)
4: Opening the wav file in Satdump, using pipeline for Meteor M2-x LRPT, and using frequency offset of 1 and DC blocking on.
Satdump-ui seemed to work more reliably on a Linux desktop than Windows.

Meteorologist here. The lighter blue in Hudson bay is likely an algae bloom. The blue color of your clouds could be that you pulled a multi-spectrum image from the satellite. Some multi-spec images will add blue tint to clouds that are majority ice crystal to help identify the higher cirrus clouds from the mid and lower clouds made of water droplets or super cooled droplets. Also the imagery is better because it is a polar orbiting satellite which is in a lower Earth orbit than the NOAA geosynchronous weather satellite. Excellent video, wish i knew more on the actual retrieval of the data to help out.

Thanks! I was comparing quality to the NOAA POES (# 15, 18, and 19) satellites. Those are great, and easier to receive, but not quite the same resolution as this one.

I believe that's actually ice that was melted into tiny little chunks. The ice just absorbs a lot of IR thus the blue colour.

My brother was a spook for the Army, not sure his MOS but he also worked with satellites. He was stationed in Harrogate at one point. He talked about getting out and making a lot as a civilian, but went into Medical School and is now a primary care doctor. The crazy thing is he regarded his top secret clearance firmly and would never discuss his job that he wasn’t suppose to.

I was interragated, (they called it an interview), two different times, both by FBI agents, which I still think is odd, but it may have had to do with location. Sounds like your bro did pretty well for himself afterwards.

Hi from Russia! Amazing and very interesting content, subscribed! :D One small correction thought about the history of the program. As far as I know, the "Метеор" satellite series started way back during the Soviet Union (there were over 30 of "Метеор-1-# satellites for example during the 70-ies). The "-М #-#" series however started with "Метеор-М 1", which launched in 2009 and worked for its full mission duration of 5 years. Then there was the "Метеор-М 2-#" series, that had 3 total failures, only 1 of those were caused by the hard/software on board of the satellite (the "Метеор-М 2"), one micrometeoroid strike (in 2019, they managed to recover it tho iirc), and a launch vehicle failure in 2017. So its not all that bad regarding the failures statistic :D

All meteor satellites that still functions are M versions. Meteor-2 series died many decades ago. In fact normal lifetime of these satellites is 5 years so even Meteor-M are beginning to die because three out of five exceeded their lifetime operation. And a forth one - Meteor-M 2-2 collided with a micrometeor 3 years ago so like two years ago Roscosmos reset it so it can work a little longer but I'm not sure if it still functions (it was launched 4 years ago after all).

In case it isnt joke. all Meteor-M №2 got their name before first one was launched. There still 4 to be launched. Meteor-M №2 is model name, number after dash is unique name. From russian speaker perspective its pretty obviously, and I dont see how its differ from NASA, ESA, CNSA or JAXA naming scheme...

@@kv4648 -0 become glitchy after 5yrs of service(service life for meteor M2 is at least 5 years but warranty also 5yrs), was decommissioned from work and serve as test platform -1 burned in failed rocket with 18 other satellites. -2 being hit by meteor and lost controll for 6 months, still in service -3 just launched as planned, still in service. 4 more to be launched.

There is a meteorological joke in Poland that during the previous communists era, before 1989, west german meteorology Group was sending counterfeit data suggesting that on 1st May there would be huge Rain above all of Poland :) so that polish meteo would make a suggested prognosis and people would not attend marches

dang, I'm 19 and you really inspire me to continue studying IT and some software development in college. Even though I really don't enjoy or find interest in coding mostly and just seeing what you are able to put together and do is really inspiring. I didn't find that much interest or enjoyment in coding in college either! There was too much boring math and statistical stuff. However, now that I'm doing more programming for projects I'm directly interested in, I find it a lot more fun! I've been learning more Python for my Raspberry Pi projects, and trying to learn / remember enough Linux bash stuff for automating various tasks.

@@saveitforpartsbest advice I have for people getting started programming is to identify something (reasonable) you want to accomplish with code and go figure out how to do it. There’s infinite resources online but programming is boring af if you are just doing a course that is explaining what a list is and having you make calculators over and over.

There are PCBs available, some as Gerber files to have them made and some people sell them premade with the Quad inverter chip on it because EEPROMs need the Chip Select line reversed before they'll work. And then getting a EEPROM burner which both works with the chip programming voltage and your computer. I've gotten as far as getting a PCB for making a 4K 2600 cartridge, but haven't sourced chips or a burner yet.

@@Mrshoujo Still running my 800 and 800XL. My favorite part of the 80s was spending all day typing in a program and running it for an hour, before resetting and typing in another. My cousin really leveled me up; gave me his 410 recorder, when he got a ST. I have a non-working 400 I may donate to someone for a restoration. 7th grade Computer Literacy got my best friend and me in nothing but trouble. Always getting yelled at to do the ASSIGNMENT. Then for finals when we were supposed to write a program, I got a C because my teacher thought I didn't put any effort into it. And she was right, it was something I wrote at home while I was watching Knight Rider.

Amazing work! A nitpic though, most of the curvature effect is not due to the roundness of earth, but just because the camera has very wide FoV, around 120 degrees if my math holds. The ground on the edges of the picture is at about 10-25 degrees compared to the camera. If the earth were flat, it would only be around 5 dergees better. Just rough scetches on GeoGebra.

Hey, the signal seems strangely weak to me with your well build setup. Maybe try more gain on the SDR. You may have more luck with the built in satdump recorder/live decoder. It allows you to change the gain on the SDR while recording and thereby gives you live feedback on how much gain you need. It will also not create giant raw files on your system. The SNR should be higher than 10 db for a good image. Be careful though, a raspi 3 might be too weak to handle live decoding via satdum (if you are using one). I hope this helps, love your channel!

I used to do this stuff in the '60s. Back then, all you needed was a suitable receiver, a fax machine, and plenty of paper. My friends thought I was goofy then too.

Weather satellites were a brand new technology, getting them up there was insanely expensive, and building the electronics to survive the environment was revolutionary, but the actual tech they leveraged to record and send the images was off-the-shelf facsimile format.

Smart idea stacking all the images. I pray satdump can figure out how to get all that data from one image though. By far the easiest program I've used to decode it.

I recorded the now most recently defunct Meteor-M2 using an RTL-SDR v3 dongle on my Windows 10 laptop using a pre-packaged software combo (whose name I can’t quite remember). I also employed the use of a USB GPS receiver for better than NTP time synchronization.

why did you need such time accuracy? the beamwidth of antennas used is not that critical NTP should be accurate to quarter sec you were probably using an omnidirectional quadrifilar?

The desktop machine is whatever the latest Ubuntu is, the Pi is using a semi-recent Rasbian. I used GQRX on the cyberdeck for the live SDR feed.

Hi, network technician at your service here, (network+ certified) The issue with your image requisition is that the type of connection you have is connectionless, meaning there is no error correction code in your connection to the satellite. Unfortunately this means that the only good way to get decent images is to take a bunch then stack them on top of eachother and remove obvious errors. However, you could make or find a program that could automatically fill and replace the black striping error, though more than likely, you'd still have to fix color shift striping errors manually. Good luck! It also may be worth looking into a larger receiver!

Love your videos about listening to satellites. I would never guessed this is possible. I do not know much about it but I would be interested to know at least a little bit more. For example: - Does the satellite only transmit this signal you are decoding, or are there other signals? - Why is decoding so complicated? What is the process to get the data? Why it looks like you have to break some weak encrypttion? - Is there some encrypted signal with better image quality, or if done properly with good antenna setup this would be enough? - How is Russian satelite controlled when is over USA, is it by link to another Russian satelite? Or are there in USA some ground stations to do that? - Why the signal you are receiving is not (properly) encrypted? Is there some agreement to broadcast it for everyone who want to listen (not very common these days to do something for free)?

There are some other data channels coming from this satellite. The other one that amateurs often use is a higher-resolution image that needs a better antenna (and the antenna needs to be aimed either by hand or with a rotor as the satellite moves). It's complicated mainly because the software is all pieced together by amateurs as a hobby. I'm sure there's a commercial program used by Russian weather stations, ships, etc. There have been some more polished, less complicated programs available to the general public that will do all of this for me (like Raspberry-NOAA-v2), but they haven't been updated to handle this new satellite yet. It's not really encrypted at all, just encoded into a digital format that you have to process to get the image out (like modem tones / digital TV). I believe the intent is that a Russian ship (military or commercial) anywhere on the ocean can tune in and get this live weather picture to see where storm systems might be located. Same with the NOAA weather satellites that operate on similar frequencies, anyone can use them anywhere in the world for basic weather info when they can't access another forecast. As far as control, the satellite should be pretty automatic and doesn't need 24/7 control. When it's over Russia, or a remote ground station, they can send it commands to do whatever they might need (turn systems on and off, adjust orbit, etc).

Man, I wish I was smart enough to mess with this stuff. Thanks for the videos/effort, it's appreciated. Edit: Have you considered you simply need a better processor to make the (comparatively) inefficient jump? Like, raspberry pi seems to miss a lot more data, reminds me of low FPS due to slow storage or CPU bottleneck. Your other setup seems to do better, but still has large blocks where it's bottlenecked (if that's teh issue). Just a guess though, I have no idea what I'm doing. Edit2: You could check by watching your system usage (storage, CPU, voltage, etc) to see if it's getting maxed out, then you at least know you're bottlenecked. Could do that easily enough on the pi and desktop. I generally try to have a conky running because I like to see when it's time to blow out the laptop fins/fans.

I think the Pi is getting the data, it's just not processing completely on my Windows machine. It seems to process better on another Linux system with similar specs to the Windows desktop. Not sure why.

I'm pretty sure these are intended to be available to anyone anywhere in the world, much like the US NOAA satellites in similar orbits. Potential users would be ships out of range of regular weather radio.

Not a Flat Earther but at 7:30 I don't think that distortion is caused by the curvature of the earth. The orbit of the satellite is so low we are only seeing a small part of the earths surface, so not enough to see the type of distortion you mention. I think the image is closer to a 2D map with lens distortion and perspective, not earths visible curvature.

work it out - its distortion at the edges due to the earth's curvature. They dont use a "lense" it's a rotating scanner. in the 80s for mil work we had software to take that distortion out and then overlay map outlines etc..(NOAA HRPT but that's downsampled in the sat imeddiatly to "direct broadcast" APT)

Imagine, you can see the curvature of the earth just by taking off on an aerostat. I'm serious, that's more than enough. There are a number of videos on RU-vid demonstrating this. So the height of the satellite is definitely enough for this.
