I don't get why people bring up Ash. I feel like Red showing up is more likely. In fact the guys at Legendary have stated they would like to do a film based on Red and Blue's journey if Detective Pikachu does well.

The reason he doesn't want a pokemon partner is because he feels like he was abandoned by his father. Meaning that in this world a pokemon is your companion not as a father type but more as someone you can rely on as well as can rely on you but if you have abandonment issues then you don't feel like you can rely on things in that way. Classic abandonment issues. They kind of drive that point in the begging of the movie by using the friend and constantly reminding you he's lonely. He blames his father for "caring" more about his work and his own pokemon partner than his own family. Which he fells abandoned and hurt by which is why he doesn't like his father or pokemon for that matter. Classic psychology.

easter egg time! spoiler-ish so tread with care. during one of the scene, pikachu gets badly injured when a rock fell on him. quite a small rock, but it seems to do a lot of damage. i feel like this is a reference to how pikachu, an electric pokemon, are weak to ground. yeah i know rock is another type, but i feel like they can't throw ground on him, you know.

For me I feel like the movie was too short. Some scenes did drag on too long and some went to fast. So many events in the movie just kinda happen with no build up and you just gotta deal with it.

I thought the movie was great, there's really great cinematography, great shots and it was filmed on actual film instead of digital so that it can feel more Detective Noir type of movie which this movie is all about which is why you guys feel like it's slow. It's a huge Noir detective movie homage which makes it a bit cookie cutter but it does it right as fan service to both Pokémon as well as detective Noir movies. I'm 30 and when I was a kid I was prime demo for pokemon gen 1 only and I thought as a Pokémon movie it was great but I think it'll open up to a genuine red and blue Ash Ketchum pokemon movie story. The movie rights were only approved to fail because pokemon company didn't want a live action movie of pokemon but they agreed by saying you can only do detective Pikachu but they did it right.

Actually saw this with my girlfriend and it's alright it's not groundbreaking like Avengers type of stuff by no means, but considering how many video game movies they screw up like oh I don't know Doom, they at least did a decent job at this. Plus the villain in this movie he could have had Mewtwo patch him up, which seriously not pissing off and showing the Dark Side of humanity towards one of the most powerful Pokemon in the series actually would have been a good idea.

Tim wanted to be a Pokemon champion growing up. On his "most important day" (when he was 10 years old because that's when kids get their starter Pokemon) his mom because gravely ill and was hospitalized. She passed away and his dad, a detective that works with Pokemon, escaped into his work and wanted to leave the town. Tim didn't want to because that's where his home is; all his memories with his mom and his mom's mom live there. So from his point of view, Pokemon took both of his parents. Thats why we see his first attempt at getting a Pokemon partner be a Cubone who is known to always carry his deceased family member with him. Tim didn't know his father's voice Because that's the first thing people usually forget about someone. Harry might have left voicemails but Tim most likely never gave him the time of day and that's why Harry wrote him a letter.

Something I find funny is that the main villain went through the trouble of experimenting on a Ditto so it can copy humans.... When he could've just used a Zoroark.

Rhyme city in the video games has always been a place where humans and pokemon can live together like in zootopia but you guys are leaning towards it copied that movie or used it as an excuse but in reality it always existed.

For a Pokemon movie, it's pretty good. Probably a B+. One thing that got me is I thought they were hinting that the main character's mom died in a Pokemon Tournament or something. Cause they did like a childhood flashback when he looked at a Sinnoh Tournament poster.

To be fair, and this is kinda for people who played Detective Pikachu, but iirc, Pikachu never did a lot (or any I can't recall) fighting in the game it's kinda based loosely off of anyway, but great review, YVG!

As a pokemon fanatic who's played nearly every game I loved it, but I can certainly see how people who aren't as big fans of the series didn't find it as engaging. The plot got weaker near the end, but it made for a cool twist with Pikachu being his dad and all. This movie borrows alot of the plot from the Detective Pikachu game and less so from the Red and Blue style RPGs (though there are still elements of those). That's where R comes from and most of the plot. If they ever make another live action Pokemon movie I expect there to be more actual battles.

Just curious and I want to get everyone's opinion on this. Would giving this movie more screen time help with the plot? Because it does start slow and then suddenly speeds up with no good closure on some plots.

Pokémon was fuuuuucking huge at my age. I was 11-12 so perfect age for it

The movie had definite flaws that make it short of a great movie (it being obviously cut down to around 90 minutes making the story feel rushed, some of the jokes not landing, etc), but by god did this movie make me excited to the point of forcing myself to not go to the bathroom in order to miss nothing. There were so many great nods towards the world of Pokémon, I couldn't help but be fully invested. And hearing that the movie is doing really well all over the world, there already a sequel being produced and, apparantly, a Pokémon cinematic universe in the making, is making me goddamn excited to see what is coming in the following years. As a stand-alone movie, this movie is a 6, maybe 7 out of 10 at most. But for me as a long-time Pokémon fan, it's a 9.5 out of 10.

So here's an important question: How does Mr. Mime go to the bathroom?

i loved the movie. it was different than i thought it'd be. it didn't carry that detective feel of it that it led off so strongly with but i still really liked it edit: i think danny devito would've made more sense if it was based off of the pikachu from the detective pikachu game. in that game pikachu is like a grumpy old man detective with a deeper voice. ryan does an awesome job but his sounds much younger and enthusiastic than the original

Best way to enjoy even meh movies is to turn off your brain. I myself have trouble enjoy any kind cinematography if I'm heavily dissecting the film at every turn seeing as it comes so easily to me whether I want to or not. After enjoying the movie with your brain turned off you can then truly assess how much you enjoyed it and start nit picking afterwards

y'all must have gotten hype before entering DP because for me its low full price with the thanks of being (x) doubt in my mind when I watch it.

so pokemon games are story driven even abck with red and blue, just not as character driven as say final fantasy 4 onwards(altho that has been changing as of late) take for isntance red/blue/yellow your A plot is your rivals a dickhead who says hes gonna be the best and to prove it hes gonna beat the pokemon league, you get to the first town and there are two exits north(which is currently blocked off by an old man with a hangover, it was the 90's) and west, so you leave west go down a short route and your rival goes "dont bother dick head they wont let you past the lobby with out any badges from the gyms across the region, so after fighting your rival you head back to town(or were warped there via a blackout because you lost a 2v1 match) you go into the pokemart(now granted you could have just not went west and came here first the rival encoutnr mentioend above is purely optional and will cease to be after you beat the first gym) and are told "hey can you delvier this package to professor oak?" and seing as captain ahngover aint getting his coffe anytime soon you might as well, so you get back and oak being old says "seeing as im probably going to die soon i want to ask you to complete the pokedex" and thus we have the B plot fufilling an old mans wish now this one is the last thing youll complete so it also serves as incentive to do post game stuff so we beat the first gym everything going nice and smooth but uh oh were in a cave and theres assholes with whips called team rocket and they are saying vaugely evil shit and were also called criminals by an old man in the building outside of the cave, thus kciking off the C plot the evil team whcih will be the first one to resolve as in this specific case the mob boss that runs team rocket is the last gym leader and after getting his ass rocked by a 10 year old multiple times decides "ya know i should probably get good" and disbands team rocket after you get your last badge (which kinda fucks up the economy seeing as he also leaves the country because...crime boss and well theres now no way for anyone after you to get their 8th gym but that gets resolved later) pokemon games have demphisised the B plot of the pokedex as time has gone on instead adding story or post game gauntlets in its wake with new pokemon potentially only found in the post game, this started around gen 3 where coincidentally characters started to get more fleshed out...even if they were for the most part super lame with a few expetions...again its improved over time now we have inter dimensional hell beasts that are the hybrid of a olympic body builders and mosquitos that can make a snorlax look like a deflated balloon in seconds...not even joking theres a gif from the anime and everything its terrifying, that has nothing to do with the characters getting better i just wanted to bring that up

I grew up with Pokemon 1st and 2nd gen. But tbh I just don't care about Pokemon. At all, lmao. Not gonna watch this movie but good for the people that enjoy it.
