I played with this weeks ago! Mostly with an eye for a mob farm. The problem is that it is a dual state. And if it gets in the wrong state the device stays in that wrong state. And believe me it can easily get in the wrong state.

Can you invert the signal from the observer. It doesn't seem to work/too short a pulse

yes, you can. You should play around with putting a repeater behind the observer, or perhaps put a whole block behind the observer with a redstone torch on top. Try some things out - you might get it to work differently.

it's a cool mechanic. you should check out Cubfan135's ender pearl dispenser video - he figured out how to use string to update things like this before the observer block came out.

Thanks for explaining what that new block does , I have seen some of the Hermits use it an I have no clue what they are talking about . I guess it is something NEW like concrete is , even though I have been using concrete for several years already in Minecraft , think all you had to do is smelt gravel . Thanks for the new videos , can't wait to see what you come out with next . No , I don't play vanilla , modded only 1.5.2 , 1.6.4 & 1.7.10 only .

well thats a nice way to make an emergency entrance/escape tunnel. run to it and fall in, any mobs chasing you will drop pathfinding the moment the block goes back into place

I've not seen your design, but this would effectively replace the old pressure-plate-based farms that don't work now that mobs won't spawn on them, correct? Or will mobs bot spawn in string-occupied blocks?

Since 1.8, all you need is a platform with an endermite in the middle. Endermen pathfind toward emdermites

It's been a while since I built one, and I was trying to find an innovative way to do it. Yes, I agree, the use of the endermite certainly makes it easier and less resource-intensive. Do you suppose the feature Snocrash highlighted would help with a simple overworld hostile mob farm, just using it to control long, narrow spawning platforms? Obviously the tried and true method of waterstreams and cobble platforms is just that, but would this mechanism allow a more efficient operation?

I can't remember if mobs spawn on string. I know that since 1.9, mobs can't spawn on pressure plates
