Made in about week so I heard. Really defines the genre plus having a definitive femme fatale in Ann Savage who should have gone on to other more high profile films. She is unforgettable here.

There's another Detour from 2016 which is kind of a goof but a fun one. The dopey protagonist is seen watching the Ulmer Detour before his own misadventures take off.

the most ridiculous part of the movie was the idea that he could have strangled vera to death accidentally with the phone wire by pulling on it from under the door. that scene convinced me that he intentionally murdered her and charles haskell and the whole movie was simply his own false narrative where he paints himself as innocent and a victim of circumstance. or maybe he has split personalities and actually believes his own version of the story.

I saw the film on RU-vid last night. I love the «film noir» genre so I try to see one from time to time. This «Detour» was apparently one of the few one considered by this genre ans I was curious how a story could work in such a short time (1h 8min.). You can clearly see the lack of budget (so many retro projection for the actors in the car. And the shot we see on your video (at 5:27) is almost a spoof of what «film noir» would became (transition of lights made on camera to show inner thought of the character). I agree that the «femme fatale» role is well done by the actress; you can’t really say how the film is going to end. Amusingly the film tone and story (a man at the wrong place, at the wrong time) feels a lot like a «Hitchcock presents« tv episode. Director (and film buff) Peter Bogdanovich wanted to d a remake of the film in the 70s but it wasn’t made. Thanks for your video essay!

Savage's character did make a brief attempt to seduce Neal's character when she put her hand on his shoulder, looked into his eyes, and said she was going to bed. But I think Neal's character thought she was such a bitch, he was turned off and didn't think she was even worth a roll in the hay.

Thank for not showing your face until the end. I get so tired of youtubers inserting their face when all I want to see is the analysis of the film. Cutting to the purple background is 100x more preferable than giving in to vanity. Thank you, nice work.

just watched through all your videos, some good stuff, BUT HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT SAM RAIMI'S SPIDERMAN PLATINUM TRILOGY LIKE THAT, also add film grain to the purple background, grain makes everything better.

An added point of interest in the move is that Vera is dying (cough cough- Camille- you're philosophy stinks- but i'm on my way out).

"FILM NOIR" is a new term, totally unknown to those people making such films primarily in the 1940's and 1950'a. It is a terribly misused new term for many movies of the time, that are in Black and White. Heavy Cigarette smoking is in practically every "Film Noir" film and is not even allowed in the World we live in today. It would ba an impossibility to make a "Film Noir" film today that is credible, as they were from a time period seemingly unknown to the people of today and are filmed in Black and White, white most people today seem to think they are being cheated by not having any color in the film. Boy are they sadly mistaken..

Watched it a few times.. at 1st I thought it was a great film noir .... then i realized a major plot hole . Spoiler alert... Why would a guy on the run.. with a stolen car, stolen ID and holding 700 usd ... trying to get to L A to see his girl... stop and pickup a hitchhiker... That doesn't make any sense

He wasn't exactly "on the run". The police were not aware his activities at the time. Secondly, he knew how rough was travelling by thumb. He was simply extending the same courtesy that other drivers did when he needed a ride.
