Detroit Michigan history and cartography is explored and examined from this vintage map that was originally produced in 1895. In the video we zoom in an look at various aspects that make this map so great.
In the video we also discuss a historical background of Detroit Michigan. For example topics discussed in the video include the indian tribes that lived in the area that included the Huron, Odawa, Potawatomi and Iroquois. Also discussed are the historical aspects of the French and Indian War, the Jay Treaty, The seige of detroit, the underground railroad and Henry Ford starting the automobile revolution.

The railway you mention @ 12:50 is known as the Dequindre cut and ran directly from the water front through eastern market and in to the industrial heart of the cities east side. Remnants of it remain today as a greenway bike/pedestrian path.... Imagine the high line in NY, only recessed below street level instead of being elevated.

A short story by: Antony H. Davidson-Black The Sociopaths Of Maple GroveOn the edge of town where city limits meet, as close to desolate as metropolitan areas get. sit ordinary somewhat quaint appearing row dormitories, though appearences aren't always as they seem. This portion of land started as acreage for a school house, years later the older half of.. a cematary. If being built on hollowed ground wasn't enough to create havoc and restlessness among forces beyond living comprehension, down the road was a Native battlefield. What needs to be understood and taken heed by the Benevolent is that blood that deep leaves a stain so egregious that if not stymied, can play host to the wicked and bizarre. This instance unfortunately attracted the most unclean sorts. The type of THINGS that are spawned from other things when those entities crawl back up from untimely horrid deaths bared as crosses on the wicked. which slowly is becoming The residences of Maple Grove Townhouses's undoing. Faces that appear compassionate and sympathizing but with just a slight shadow of a hint that is shiveringly unsettling!. But take slight comfort in knowing, these well hid beasts are mere shells of people having turned away from the light they are timid and reluctant to face the outside therefor they often recoil back into their dwellings startled by the outside world. To see the blood chilling method of a blinding & callous system of death so wickedly ingenious carried out hand in hand by the residents, leads one to conclude it must have been touched by the hand of Lucifer himself, though incorrect, Maple Grove Townhouses will introduce a level of depravity that will surely burn until it consumes itself. A dizzying game of fetch and hide and go seek that pinpoints murders several miles from it's location on the map effectively insulating itself. A dark Anti-fairy tale???? what if I were to tell you astonishingly that it's origins had validity! That guests of such a inhumane place are spun 'til logic is hard to envision, and randomly fed to depraved lunatics at a wim on this blood soaked consecrated ground. This is where average citizens who slip thru the cracks, are sent to DIE!! Where Livonia artists families are slaughtered, the youngest being toddlers! On grounds of what started in the early 1800's in Nankin Michigan as Perrinsville school house. An institution among meny established to better society, Now sadly turned into Godlessness and blight, a murder machine!

The city limits in 1895 included Downtown, and, perhaps, Midtown. But...the city limit itself began to dramatically expand, as Detroit swallowed up other municipalities, farmland, etc. My question is: if you look at the present city limits; from eight mile to the river, from Telegraph to Chalmers...how much of that had any settlement at the turn of the Century??

Not a very interesting presentation. Timeline info is off. Those 'measurements of distance' are NOT the amount of miles from shore to shore across the Detroit River. They represent the distance from City Hall. And mispronunciation of very well-known major Detroit street names (such as 'Gratiot') gives away the fact that this guy doesn't know what he's talking about, and isn't from the Detroit area. And probably has never even been here. LOL.. He pronounced 'Atwater' as "Water Street". 😕
