Devastating Elkhorn Tornado: Assessing The Aftermath

Last week a large tornado hit the west side of Omaha, NE. We have an office on the northwest side and thought we might be in trouble. Luckily, we did not get hit. Thanks to the warnings and hard work of meteorologists and storm chasers, there were no deaths. Several homes were hit directly in Elkhorn.
We run out there to lend a helping hand and try to aid in cleanup efforts.
Thanks for watching!

You’ve said it all guys. Thanks for doing the video in a sensitive way. I’ve never seen a tornado & never will. That’s the first time other than on the news clips I’ve seen the aftermath so up close. I hope they all get prompt help in the clean up and rebuild.

We like to joke and mess around, but there are times that we need to be serious and help out.

The devastating power of wind and water is amazing. Glad to know your crew is okay. Really feel badly for those impacted. We had a bunch of damage in Texas as well- not near me but many many lives have been impacted by the storms…

We watched our favorite chaser’s stream Friday where a tornado in north Texas hit a small city twice. It did a u turn and came back. That is some crazy weather. Stay safe to all our friends in Texas!

This one was scary. I still have friends that live in the Elkhorn area. Had trouble getting in touch with them after the tornado went through, they were OK. West O is getting so built up now that its a miracle that nobody lost their lives. I lived in La Vista for 10 years and we were lucky we didn't see anything this destructive. I do remember having to head to the basement a number of times because of storms there. Some scary moments for sure.

Last one that went through my yard hit so fast that after the alarms went off I only had time to step out of the shower and grab a pair of pants and then it hit before I could put them on. Thankfully it only threw ground up vegetation at the bathroom window turning it green before it darted between the houses and out into the street. It was eerie to see it on security cameras pick up a large oak branch like it was a feather and deposit it on the neighbors roof. Two men couldn't lift it so it had to be cut into about 4 pieces of about 150 or so lbs each so it could be moved off the roof. My boat had spun around to the other side of a tree and was halfway off the trailer but undamaged but there was glass and shingles from the neighbors homes all over the place and though its been over a year I'm still finding some glass and roofing that we missed cleaning up. Duke Energy had a man on a pole one street over working on a transformer and all he had time to do was cinch his climbing belt tight to the pole so he could ride it out. He was a bit disheveled and beat up as the poled got whipped about but was able to walk away under his own power afterwards. I'm seriously considering hardening the central hallway in our house with storm ties going to the slab on all the studs, exterior doors leading into all the rooms and a 3/4 inch plywood cap above in the attic since the water table is too high to have a traditional storm shelter below grade. Best!

I feel for you. The weather in your area is intense. Much more action than we see. Stay safe, we need you to stick around so that we have a friend in Florida!

@@pestcontrolguys We actually feel You's Guys got it worse. Our tornadoes are usually start off as water spouts and by the time they climb to 100 feet above sea level to get to my neighborhood they have a very small footprint and often weave between the houses. Flying debris is often the biggest hazard. The neighborhood was built in the 1940's and has not in recorded history been in the direct path of destruction from a hurricane either which is why we chose the area. With the warming that's taking place and the way the Atlantic Stream is changing we realize that there is no guarantee its going to stay that way so we're considering stepping up our game. Perhaps a Steel Tube Bolt Down F5 Storm Shelter might be the best solution either inside the garage or perhaps on a dedicated slab in the back yard. Both HD and Lowes carry them starting at about $3,500 for the 4 victim/passenger models. Best!
