Episode 72
Most all weeks on the farm with our Rescued Belgian Draft Horses are amazing and these horses teach us something new everyday. Such as how to love, trust, respect others in the herd and how to forgive other for actions of the past.
However, this past week was absolutely devastating. If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram you will have already seen the post that Paisley passed away in her sleep on Saturday August 26, 2023. We went out to the barn to feed everyone breakfast and found her in one of the runs. From our security camera she passed peacefully between 7am and 9am. We were completely shocked and devastated by the loss. Paisley was a sweet old girl and will be missed dearly.
Again on Tuesday August 29th we had another horrible day as we had to rush a horse to the vet for colic. Colic is a term used to describe a symptom of abdominal (belly) pain, which in horses is usually caused by problems in the gastrointestinal tract. There are over 70 different types of intestinal problems that cause colic symptoms, which range from mild to severe (life-threatening) in nature. Because colic is often unpredictable and frequently unpreventable, it’s a common concern for horse owners.
The horses taught us something again...you should always live in the moment and regret nothing! Love unconditionally! Tell the ones you love what they mean to you! Don't neglect the ones that love you! Never give up! Never pass up a chance to say I love you because tomorrow is never guaranteed or promised.
“Tomorrow is not promised to us. Start dancing in the rain and look for your rainbow through the storm clouds. Once you find it, don’t ever let it go.” - Amelia Hutchins

Noah is a comfort horse...he knows your hurting, & you need a hug...♡☆♡ All us horse, & critter people feel for you, & understand your broken heart...as we all have had similar situations, & losses. My great Aunt was an old school horse woman... & on her death bed she told her daughter she could see horses on the other side...this is where I hope to be reunited with my lost loved ones, my horses, dogs, cats...etc...It's a comfort to think they await us on the other side. I hope this will help ease your pain...& the fact that you did everything to ease their's, & make their last year a happy time, a safe time...God Bless, & Happy Trails to you, & your beloved lost loved ones...until you meet again. ..♡☆♡

@@FletcherFarmsAmarillo Thank you for taking the time answering! Glad you understand and are prepared for what might come. I can only guess about the feelings of the people who prepared them for slaughter - possibly being aware of what else was ahead of them. Watching several farm channels on RU-vid, I understand farmers who state „every animal on the farm has its purpose“ - some work, some leg eggs, produce milk and some for meat…. If their purpose is over, that’s when they are sent to slaughter. That’s how farming works. And in some cases, it prevents them from suffering. You do a great job and have a beautiful mind, but this should be in your mind, too!

Ya know Julie, coming from a rescuer background, the ones that are most hard to win their trust, they become soo special because of the time invested in them. It's just that much harder when you have to part from one another!!! Omgoodness the stories I could tell you from 30 years! But, just know, they are celebrating together w their Creator and their new family they now are with. The scene, where Finn comes running in, from the pasture, neighing as he approaches you, well, just shows, how much he loved you! You won his trust and his heart! What a reward you received from your boy!!! I just was taken back!!! What a journey you and Cory are on!!! A very special journey, my friend! Always remember, it's not goodbye, it's, I'll see you on the other side! Bless you and Corey!! May God feel your broken hearts w a new strength and determination to meet another! ❤🐎❤️

Thank you for the kind words and support during this difficult time! Colic is horrible and just comes out of nowhere. We would have had him put down here. We didn't get a chance to say goodbye.

@@FletcherFarmsAmarillo You know, hindsight is 20. Colic is a nightmare but you had no way of knowing precisely how bad it was. I'm so glad there are mobile vets around here, because my poor old kitty had a stroke one night and died in my arms. She crawled down the stairs. It was awful. I had painkillers left over from another kitty who died of cancer far too young. I'd hope your vet keeps you stocked with various meds for the horses, given their age. I blanched when I saw the necrotic section of intestine. Prey animals are very good at hiding pain and illness. Colic in a horse is a horrible, sudden thing. I'm so sorry, again. It never gets easier, even if you think you're prepared for it.

@@FletcherFarmsAmarilloyes❤❤❤❤❤❤ 0:33 yes you learn by experience. That will be your policy and its a good one. And old animals know themselves what is to happen. They know you are helping them. I learnt I will always be at the side of any animal or person I love when they pass. No more sitting outside in waiting rooms etc. Rest assured they are at peace now. ❤

Omg , I've watched the entire memory vlog in a mix of welling up and full on tears..... hideously difficult time. The ladies are going to miss Finn, especially Lena..... I'm very aware of the unrequited love and emotions that go into rescuing animals, my love it rescue Lurchers (36yrs). There are no words to make you feel any better, yes, time does help, but the whole and the hurt always remains, just in different ways. Try to ease your pain and heart ache by recognising what an amazing chapter you had added to their lives. From immeasurable unhappiness, pain and loveless existence they found completely the opposite when they found you and the wonderful world of Fletcher Farms and all that it gave them. The pair of you are amazing . You have done and still doing amazing things. They do say Grief is the price we pay for love. That love goes both ways, from you to them..... and eventually from them to you.... unrequited,..... you've totally and absolutely earned that love. A beautiful, kind and giving lady. From misery and destined to a Hideous end, you saved them, and gave them a beautiful last chapter. Stay strong, keep going, take each day as they come, but more importantly, give yourself time to Grieve, recover and repair. Paisley and Finn's friends will be the support that helps you with that, and you for them. Fletcher Farms is a safe haven for these beautiful gentle giants.... all your love and hard work. So sad, stay safe....xx ❤

Loving an animal and losing them for whatever the reason is one of the worst experiences any of us ever have. And losing a horse, cat, dog - reminds me to really relish every moment I have with my own animals while I have them because we never really know when the time will come for them to go on to another “place”. I’m sorry for your losses and I hope you take comfort in knowing what a great life you gave them in the time they recovered with you. Hugs to you all.

As I always say, horses get it. They have no regrets. They have lived life as true as they possibly could have. Unlike us, they know nothing else. What do we have to worry? They are a part of what they have always known: God’s great plan and His love for every hair on their heads. Know it.

Julie and Cory I am so sorry for your loss, I am saddened for you and know all to well how hard it is to lose an animal you love. Paisley at least died a peaceful death in a place where she was loved and well taken care of and Finn is at peace as well, he is no longer suffering, you did everything you could for him but unfortunately it doesn’t always work out the way we want it to. Animals know when you love them and are kind to them and each one of your rescues know how lucky they are to live their lives out in your sanctuary with the care and love you give them. Animals have the same emotions that we humans have and I want to thank you so much from the bottom of my animal lovers heart for all that you have done and are still doing for those gentle giants. I know how hard it is to even talk about the loss of a four legged friend that you loved, I am so sorry. Hugs and much love to you and your husband, two people with giant loving hearts, I am crying with you my friend. 😢❤️🐴

I don't know how anyone with a tender heart toward animals can ever toughen themselves enough to bear losses such as you and your husband have had to bear. All you can do is to look at the beautiful results you have had with all the horses that you have rescued and also look back at the good lives you made possible for Paisley and Finn until they passed due to issues over which you had no control. Look at all the horses grazing behind you in your video and remember the effort and sacrifice that you put forth for each and every one of them. I'm convinced that Noah knew you needed a horse-hug when he approached you and he and the rest of the herd are living their best lives in their retirement years because of you and all those who help you make these rescues possible. Just watch a video of what happens to horses in slaughter houses and you will once again put on the full armor of the warrior rescuer in your heart and mind again! Never forget, you've saved these animals from a horrible end! Paisley and Finn and all of your herd all had saviors: You and Cory and all who are a part of Fletcher Farms Amarillo and The Big Hoof Foundation!

@@annmarie5874 hello Ann Marie...I'm 100% with you! It's very sad, but animal rescue can always involve their loss, unfortunately...the most importent thing must be that the horrible auctions and the practice of the killbuyers finally end and the endless suffering of the tortured horses stops...also Big Lick, that's horrible animal abuse, this shit has to stop!

A GSD I adopted years ago had been horribly abused. He had a scar on his muzzle from being hog tied with piano wire and had numerous broken toes from trying to escape. The story was his owners threw him in the backyard to die and left to return to the country they came from. Possible, maybe even probable but someone who does boots on the ground rescue told me it was far more likely he was hanging in LA's meat market. I took Hans because he was old and scarred and those dogs don't get adopted. He was one of the sweetest Shepherds I have ever known. I connected with a vet to give him acupuncture and wisely she said to me " You have to understand that sometimes the outcome is different from what you are expecting. She had found with these sweet souls when given safety , peace and as much freedom from pain as we could that the peace and safety comforted them enough that they could finally let go. Hard on the humans but what an incredible gift to the animal. Rip Paisley what a beautiful lady you were and Finn, the handsome ladies man.I smiled watching him snooze all the girls. I think he thought he was already in heaven. I am so glad you. both found Julie and Corey , their love and caring. Special people for very special horses. An old time Shepherd person once said " When I die they will find that my heart is like an old crazed China plate. Each line is for an animal loved and cherished and lost." Thank you Julie and Corey you have the very best kind of heart.
