My definition and definition of enlightened people in India of YOGA is connecting to your TRUE SELF, the Atman.

Excellent talk on world mythology and how it affects us today. In his defence I think this is a sincere and knowledgeable academic lecture, for those who want to understand reality and the world, and not for people looking for comfort and direction through mistaking yoga as something magical or spiritual.

"everybody who desires to control, is fragmented" (36:00) . . . "hunger is our insecurities, that we are trying to compensate for" (58: 24) . . . "humans are hungry for meaning" (58:50) . . . "all human relations are a yagna, the giving and the expectations of receiving" (1:23:00) . . ."the fact is that as long as there is life, you will kill" (1:26:30). . . "ahimsa is 'do not violate'... the intention -where are you coming from?" (1:32:30)

I am so glad to see that Jivamukti brought in Dr. Pattanaik to give this lecture! My experience in having gone through a Jivamukti teacher training was that there was a marked absence of critical intellectual inquiry, along with a total lack of nuance when presenting ideas such as ahimsa and vegetarianism. More disturbing still was the lack of 'first voice' representation of Indic traditions (intellectual, musical, linguistic, ayurvedic, etc.) directly from South Asians. Even our Sanskrit class was taught by a Western person! In the 9-month teacher training program I took, almost all of the music, text book authors, guest speakers, and recognized 'gurus' (all making money from the Jivamukti brand) were Caucasian, and they presented their knowledge through this unquestioned filter of 'white person expert', as though 'Westerners' are the best ones to convey these teachings to other 'Westerners'! 'Cultural appropriation' was never discussed. Now I see that Jivamukti is facing charges of sexual abuse by teachers who have been enabled by an organizational culture of 'guru worship'. This doesn't surprise me to hear, as in my experience we were not encouraged to think critically or to question authority. I really appreciated Devduttji's comment that 'bhakti' does not mean 'servile' to an external 'authority', but rather a spontaneous feeling when positive relationships naturally occur. Otherwise 'bhakti' becomes fraught with the possibility of exploitation and domination for agendas to control, even despite the best intentions.

From the way he pronounces sanskrit words, it is clear he has learnt everything through English. Probably from Wendy Doniger, the best known abuser of Hinduism, whom Devdutt regards highly. I happened to question one of his faulty assumptions in a Twitter debate, and he promptly blocked me.

As he say in the beginning its only his interpretation if you ask any Hindu he will diffidently refuse his interpretation ...

Let Devdutta be interviewed by an expert in scriptural inferences and he will gasp for air ! Most people are gullible & are swayed by the logic he displays instead of the true interpretation. That’s why his books used to have good buyins earlier .. but then he was exposed ! He has been exposed long time back & continues to be so every day. The quality of his tweets where he abuses in foul manner anybody who puts a counterpoint shows the kind of “Shastragya” he is. He has been acting at the behest of known Hindu-haters from the west.

He doesn’t event clarify the source of his profound interpretations. Our guru-Shishya parampara hands down knowledge & teachings from a Guru to Shishya. Anyone taking up a pivotal public role of claiming to have understood our scriptures like no one before, shd have some background on such parampara. Mr. Patnaik neither represents any such parampara nor has a teacher whom he gives his regards to.
