Closure joints are a necessary aspect of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) superstructures, which allow for traffic exposure within 12-24 hours. TxDOT needs high performance concretes or other alternate materials that cure and gain strength rapidly, but without compromising the long-term durability of the joints. Researchers at the University of Texas-Center for Transportation Research conducted extensive lab structural tests, field monitoring of actual TxDOT constructed bridges, and a test program to develop a recommended mix design with acceptable attributes of strength, permeability, shrinkage, bond strength, and cracking behavior under load.
