Devil May Cry 5 SE: PS5 vs Xbox Series X - The First Next-Gen Performance Face-Off 

It took them longer than it should have to get here but of course, it's awesome. My main worry is 95% of console customers (maybe even 99%) don't even have a screen that is capable of above displaying more than 60 fps. And out of those people, 60% don't even realize their TV is essentially "throttling" their consoles' performance and they aren't able to see all that their console can offer.

It seems though that's unintentional and they will probably patch it in later as right now the PS5 has no frame rate caps while the Xbox gives the option to limit it. I don't think Capcom will leave it that way.

@@jimbob4372 Funny you say that, I just bought an adaptive sync screen but not for 120fps. I've been playing AC Valhalla on Series X which looks nice but OMG it has some of the worse screen tearing I've seen on any console. It's basically demanding you get a freesync screen

@@TheRedRaven_ It turns out it's actually a dynamic 4K (& yes this was revealed very last minute), and it's 60fps in the open world but when I walked into the first village the screen tearing started. Apparently FreeSync cleans that right up though, and tbh it's about time I upgraded my screen

So PS5 is my only option for the exclusives. Either way I win. If I didn't have a PC I would definitely buy the Xbox Series X too. All this stupid console war shit needs to end. no but for real when a games dips to like 90 fps it feels like it's in slow motion, I usually turn down settings to get a more consistant frame rate so let's hope devs will do the same on these new consoles

@@sugo8479 consistency is what's important. A 40 or 50fps dip is definitely noticable even when you are still running high framerates. A locked 60fps would solve that issue

Console gamers will now know why pc gamers whine on dips to high frames like 95fps. ;) Running at 144+ that is pretty common on pc and dropping to 95 is a huge deal. It's the percentage of frames suddenly dropped that is the issue and noticable despite the frames at the low point still being very high and far beyond what consoles could do before. Another pc feature they should implement on console is the ability to freely lock the framerate. So if the game runs at 95ish avarage they should be able to lock it at 90 to almost never have dips yet still retain as many frames as possible. Currently it seems it is either free up to 120, 60 or 30 on some games, if it's there at all.

Very Impressive... sure a PC with all the latest hardware will crush either console, but at quadruple the price... roughly. And the amount of peole who have usable 120hz displays that play consoles only is probably few and far between. PS5 needs 60fps lock full stop.

In order to use VRR, your tv needs to support hdmi 2.1, basically only a number of models in 2020 support that but there are still a number of issues with it. For example on the LG CX it raises gamma. VRR is a non factor this year

This game in particular runs fantastically well on PC in general. While you aren't likely to get a ray tracing capable GPU with a $500 budget, performance in the non RT modes would be very similar or slightly better with any carefully configured $500 PC.

If I had to guess, it will run at 1080p on the series S and will likely hold 60+ fps on frame rate mode, and 45-60 on quality mode.

People thought power on a piece of paper was going to create some drastic difference in performance and didn’t want to believe that the architecture in the PS five lets the CPU and GPU relax and still kick the same performance. What’s interesting is when you switch both games to performance mode the PS five is running at a significantly higher frame rate.

Yes, and we have an example of this optimization on PS5 with Miles Morales loading in a mere 7 seconds and Demon Souls looking almost identical to its native 4K mode in its performance, and that's not even scratching the surface imo. It'll be interesting to see the comparisons when we get full fledged built from the ground up games for each console that fully utilize the hardware.

It's only in performance mode where the PS5 did better, although the gap was larger. In all other modes, the XSX seems to be doing better. The frame rate in performance mode also seems too variable on both consoles to a point where you might as well play it on regular mode.

@@MegaFinalRound The Xbox feature is still quite annoying though, as you need to go into system settings and switch hertz manually every time you switch between this game and another game that actually manages fluid 120hz. Capcom should implement a framerate lock option.

That's pretty much what it's like right now. Demon's souls has an optional quality mode at 4k 30 and performance mode at dynamic 4k 60.

It would be great if that was the case but I suspect 30fps will become the norm in time, especially as the PC pulls ahead. Still, 60fps should be a standard by now.

@@paul1979uk2000 30fps was already the norm with PS4 and Xbox one. 60fps is the main goal of ps5 atleast as a standard. Most games on the new consoles have a 60fps performance mode so far, or 120fps. 30 is for max quality and ray tracing.

@@nathanpickering6742 I hope you are right, it would make console gaming better and would also make PC gaming cheaper as they wouldn't have to double up the frame rate, but history tents to show that they start out well but then in time settle at 30fps once they start to push the visuals again, I suspect that could be the case with the PS5 and Xbox Series X. I think what could make it much worse this time is that a real war is building up in the PC space with AMD, Intel and Nvidia, that is likely going to push progress and lower prices that I suspect the next gen consoles will need a mid cycle refresh to keep up even more than this gen needed. There's a fair chance over the next few years, PC gamers could see some massive performance gains and some big price slashing thanks to AMD competing in the high end for both cpu's and gpu's.

RTX is an nVidia's implementation of ray tracing. I'm not sure of AMD's implementation, but it's likely DXR on the Xbox and a proprietary library for PS5.

Not RTX, RT. RTX is Nvidia's proprietary ray tracing technology standing for "ray tracing experience".

Xbox currently has the advantage as you can set 60/120Hz at different resolutions, PS5 needs to correct this immediately as it’s a handicap.

So in reality, there was no clear winner here. Theyre both great and running games beautifully and we are at the beginning of the gen! @Jacob S Sony isn't lacking anything. Super Sampling will come to both. But in a worse way than DLSS as both consoles have a bad ML architecture compared to RTX cards. And VRR can come later on, but isn't something that's making Xbox more powerful at all. Both are nearly identical and we have the smallest power gap ever

AMD has finally started a price war on PC. Nvidia has no choice but to drop price to compete. Which AMD will answer to as well. We may see PC become more affordable due to competition.

It's still not pure raytracing. Only the reflections, sometimes shadows or lightning, are calculated via raytracing.

You're right ! It took me a night to render a sphere and a cube on a checkerded floor on Atari ST at 320x200 (Fun fact: I forgot the light so the result was totally black). Doing this with millions polygons fully textured with shaders at 4K is simply mind blowing. (Even more because now it's path tracing, with many rays for a single pixel...)

High resolution = more CUs. Higher frame rate = more efficient cache management. It’ll get more interesting when reconstruction and dynamic resolution come into play over old school fixed frame buffers.

Legit I sware the XSX had a worse average framerate in high fps mode than in the quality mode lol. Seems like some shity optimisation Maybe PS4 games are easier to optimise to ps5 because like they said the Dev tools are very similar while XSX opted for more parity across the PC space. I dont think we will really know the difference until we see next gen exclusive titles compared across the 2 platforms

you do realize this game is optimized for ps5 and not xbox series x yet right? And the xbox is beating it in every category besides in the framrate priority which is obviously saying something. How does the xsx have higher framrates in 4k mode then in high framrate mode? Just like 1 of the dudes in the vid said, has to be a api or optimization problem. Also, the ps5 doesn't support native 1440p, while the xsx does. So when the resoultion drops below 4k for the other performance modes, the xbox is still running at a higher resolution unoptimized while the ps5 is running in 1080p.

We don’t know their limits. This shows that we still need time for devs to learn these news consoles. And also, make a game specifically for these consoles.

@@cha0siithe0ry19 likely no given many games on PC with better general specs or equivalent can't run consistent 120FPS if it's somewhat new or depending on games engine. Take say current MMO still going. My friend can get decent performance on WOW, but say SWTOR runs like it did from first year. He has a 2080 Super and similar equivalent CPU to support from Intel. Can't get consistent 60FPS on SWTOR even in self contained areas... Mind that is more an issue of SWTOR engine is utter crap. I devolved into crapping on EA with SWTOR... There are issues on dev and game engines end besides issues on the systems. I'd be shocked outside very basic multiplayer type games most on either console will be majority 60FPS max. If adding any RT you can again kiss 120FPS out the window with current tech. Unless going with a very optimized and closed off Minecraft Mode like game...

I guess that's the excuse now

Other companies should learn from Capcom since they make the most optimized games out there.

In high framerate mode, PS5 has a HUGE advantage.. I wouldnt call 120fps vs 78fps a slight advantage.. I have no idea what's wrong with Xbox's high framerate mode, that makes no sense.

That high clockspeed in the PS5 GPU is paying off on the high frame-rate side.

From my experience on PC: Ps5 will be better when it comes to reaching 1080p 120HZ since it has a smaller GPU with higher clocks, while Xbox will be on par @1440p60 (medium frame rate and resolution) and about 10% ahead @4k. Anyway, in the long run we will mostly see 1440p nicely upscaled to 4k @60fps. When running native 1440p without the upscaling, they should be on par, when running upscaled 4k the Xbox will inch ahead thanks to bandwidth. Also, multi platform games from smaller studios that can't afford extensive developpment times are likely to run UP TO 15% better on Xbox @native 4k.

@@giokkko As a developer, I can say that it depends on how many tasks can be done in parallel. The XSX has lower clocks (the tasks take longer) but has more cores (there can be more tasks in parallel). Higher resolution is without a doubt going to benefit the XSX. Shaders are also always done on as many cores as possible. That means most light effects, material effects, water and terrain effects, transformations and much more. But a shader that is implented poorly is going to result in the task taking longer and therefore stalling all the other cores, which then therefore can't proceed (I've dealt with that countless times. Especially a problem on mobile). In that case, higher clocks would certainly be of an advantage. But nonetheless, assuming that the devs did a good job, the XSX might be able to show (slightly) more advanced effects than PS5 at a resolution of 1440P assuming the same performance target. On higher res however, the advantage of XSX becomes more evident. But I'll tell you this: Devs don't deal with stuff like that 99% of the time. It comes down to how well the API that they use to develop their games allocates the given tasks to different cores. A good API is key here, which might take some time. Therefore, I think that the XSX's advantage is going to get more significant with time.

@@omarsabir1210 People should just get what they prefer and what will make them happy, it's quite disappointing seeing people lose great experiences because of Pride, PS Fanboys are losing playing Games in the Gamepass and using the Xbox Controller(Which is the better until now, let's see if that changes in the future) and Xbox Fanboys lose the chance of playing some great games as well, obviously that only applies to people who can afford the consoles.

This generation isn't like the last one though with Microsoft buying zenimax Elder scrolls, doom, fallout and Wolfenstein to name a few probably won't be on Playstation. Sure they might be on PC but if Microsoft is smart they will make them timed exclusives for Xbox for a year or so before they have a PC launch but absolutely not on Playstation. That would sting and as good as God of War or the last of us are I'm not sure they have the same pull as an Elder Scrolls game considering people still Skyrim to this day. It will be an interesting console cycle that's for sure but I'm glad I got the Xbox because Elder Scrolls is my favorite series and had the situation been reversed there's absolutely no way I could pass buying a Playstation. So the Zenimax acquisition will be a game changer.

Some advice, if you don't care for resolutions above 1080p, don't buy a next gen console. You don't need to spend a lot of money on hardware these days to achieve 60fps at 1080p.

@@DarthScosha I'm a PC gamer and play games at 1440p100+ fps at max settings with a 3080. The point he was making was 60fps should be a given by now. Xbox is pushing for 60fps at 4k in first party titles. You can achieve this without sacrificing resolution if the game is well optimized.

Yes, but at least on Xbox you can set the refresh rate at the system level. Therefore you can set the game to 60Hz on Series X and simply game in 4K/60 as mentioned in the video. It's cool that these consoles can reach 120fps, but this game is poorly optimized and I wouldn't want to play a game that constantly dips from 100+ to low 60fps. That's worse than playing at a locked 30fps.
