Process to get this engine to run for the first time ever.
The invention of Matt Jackson in collaboration with Dimitrios Dardalis PhD, who did all of the design, analysis and engineering on the engine over a 3.5 year period.
This engine is a Axial Opposed 4 Cylinder 2 Stroke Design featuring a 2 Speed Supercharger, with Cylinder Deactivation. It is Spark Ignited and currently runs on Gasoline by way of a Custom MoTeC M142 Engine Management System with firmware by ST Consulting.

No real reason for 2 strokes these days to smoke at all... especially opposed pistons 2 strokes. Its probably just a matter of running very rich and untuned for this test.

Help me understand this please, do the piston extensions slide inside guides to keep them aligned? How do they connect to the cams, one roller at the top, one at the bottom? That would mean one roller transfers full combustion force onto the cam? I hope we don't get to hear "oh no we spun a roller bearing" to soon ;) This is like an amazing mix between desmodromic valves, the napier deltic and an axial piston pump
@TunedbyShaneT
@TunedbyShaneT Год назад
You are shockingly close to exactly how this is configured. Pretty much the answer to all of your suppositions is Yes. Well except for the bearing one 😂

thank you for being so patient answering questions . does this 2st engine need oil added to the fuel, l'm thinking not at least after run in . now to the oil ring groove on piston shown ,,,, should this rather be below ports which makes for a lot longer engine unless piston skirt shielded or scraper ring in block below port , finer points of design get more interesting . step in the piston for compression/ combustion effects port alignment; access . mmm, l have also built engines from scratch/scraps so very much appreciate the difficulties involved , your engine is beautiful a work of art unlike mine
@TunedbyShaneT
@TunedbyShaneT Год назад
I explained more about the engine and it’s oiling requirements in one of my other videos, but no it requires no oil in the fuel itself. The piston shown was a very early design and not precisely what is used in the finished engine. It uses dowels to keep the rings aligned so they don’t snag in the ports on the way by.

The smoke man! After the initial (first time) warm-up you should reduce the 2 stroke oil from 32:1 to 64:1, and apparently can go as low as 100-128:1 fuel:oil ratios, to get rid of the smog. Too bad the design isn't 4 stroke.
@TunedbyShaneT
@TunedbyShaneT Год назад
Believe it or not, this does NOT use oil mixed with the fuel. They also have a 4 stroke design.

I feel like I see someone try this design every few years. Then they just disappear along with the videos after 2 or 3 test runs. Not like the government took them out or something but more like they gave up on it and took the videos down so people would quit trying to contact them. I think this is where it can empty pockets quickly. You got one running. Awesome. Now make it better and build another one from scratch. Nice! 👍 Now do it 20 more times to make it a product you can sell or use. That's what people forget I think. Not you but people watching. Great work though! Is the timing static? May need to advance a bit upon accel and react accordingly when throttle is closed. Thanks for sharing !
@TunedbyShaneT
@TunedbyShaneT Год назад
There are several steps to the process and this is just the first one. A milestone of sorts for this project some 3.5 years in design. The timing is variable by engine speed and cylinder load, typical axes for timing control on standard engines. Appreciate you taking a look and the comment 👍🏻
@paradiselost9946
@paradiselost9946 Год назад
i think your comment on the bearing is more than likely going to be this ones achilles heel too. it wont "spin" it as such, as scuff the hell out it and the cam. they arent rolling... theyre scrubbing. think tapered bearings and why theyre tapered... that they have a common point of convergence. where does this ones bearings converge? cylindrical rollers on a radial face dont work, they scrub. and then its a cam as well. one line rolls, the rest scrubs... as it takes the forces of combustion...

I recently whatched a video on a diesel engine that was made in England used on several truck one of which logged over a million miles. The pistons met in the middle much the same only not an axial engine. The company was purchased by Chrysler and then phased out the engine. There are apparently some of these trucks in existence however they are in Australia and currently not in running condition

Achates power is already licensing similar tech to Cummins... for the ACE engine in the military for tanks etc... 1000hp 4 cyl. they also have a 10.6L and 2.7L design. Walmart and Tyson have trailed the 10.6L engine in transfer trucks fora while now.

@@TunedbyShaneT It would seem to me one advantage of this design is keeping the design simple and costs low.... the US needs a locally produced small - medium industrial engine also, for tractors and the like. Companies like Big equiment company and others are trying to return control to the owners of vehicles so they can repair and maintain thier machines cost effectively rather than essentially buying license to run thier machines (which is downright evil). Thinking in the range of 40-200hp.... many companies focus on a single market and end up over optimizing for that to the point that thier engines never get used... because they lack cross market synergy to fund R&D.

Can we see internal diagram? Interested on how you are transferring piston motion to the main shaft!
@TunedbyShaneT
@TunedbyShaneT Год назад
That exact linkage is unique and proprietary, but if you can imagine, the bottom of the extension has a roller sort of like the roller on the bottom of a conventional roller valve lifter. It rides on the face of the cam while the extension has a “knuckle” which also holds another roller on the opposing side of the cam in such a manner than as the Cam rotates, the piston is pushed up and down the cylinder.
@shvrdavid
@shvrdavid Год назад
@@TunedbyShaneT What you just described is not unique, or proprietary. It has been done for years in multiple different designs. While this is a cool, nothing mechanical about it is new. Keep in mind that the axial engine was supposed to be the next big thing in internal combustion for 100+ years. While it can have a thermal efficiency advantage, that is the only advantage it will ever have. This design is very similar to a Sterling, but you described it as having a Dyna type connection at the wobble plate. Neither of which is a new idea, or proprietary. Years ago I built my first axial engine out of an axial ac compressor. Surprisingly it worked very well, but not for long.... And that is the downfall of every axial ever designed, longevity... Who cares if it gets 100 mpg and then you walk when it breaks down shortly thereafter... Every design that has come up, failed.... You would think after 100+ years it would succeed if it was a sound design. And that is exactly why all of them fail... I too used to believe that an axial had promise, then learned from experience otherwise... Someone has else already failed with the same design people thought was unique.. Axial is probably the most tested and experimented engine design there is, which is exactly why basically nothing uses them.... They are cool thou, because they are different.
