Almost certainly the battery, I have tons of Dewalt cordless tools and this is exactly how they behave when a battery is flat or failing.

Is that diode on the heatsink a back emf blocker, but the diode is damaged?

Actually Makita has exploded views with part numbers availbale for most of their tools, and replacement parts are available for anyone to buy, even for some 20+ year old stuff. And the prices of their replacement parts are usually not crazy high.

Advertisements for Full Metal Jacket were censored in some parts of Canada due to the tagline "In Vietnam the wind doesn't blow, it sucks." At that time, Canadian censors had not yet decided whether the phrase "it sucks" (or "this sucks") was obscene.

I've seen dead spots on variable speed switches before. The motor seems to quit when the trigger is pulled back to the full on position. Could be a new switch will fix it?

I would think a bad battery is a possibility.

Well that's what i thought but he has 2 batteries. Possible that both are fubar though as they both dip down on the battery meter when it starts. I was hoping I could power it from power supply but it won't start if it doesn't see the "smart" battery. I hate these devices. My cordless lawn mower is the same.

I would just connect the battery terminal straight to the motor and wire the switch to turn the power on and off.

Go ahead on your own unit. Do it for someone else and if something goes south and the thing bursts into flames and burns down the house guess who is getting sued? No getting the owner to sign a waiver does not release your liability. When you do work for pay or free as a professional servicer you are responsible for any damage your inability to service safely causes. No way i am putting everything i have worked for on the line to make 40 bucks. I'm speaking from experience as back in the 80s a guy i knew that ran another shop, friend of my old boss was modifying TV's. Putting headphone jacks on them, and a/v inputs (doing the proper isolation too) and years down the road a set caught fire. Inspection showed it had been modified and the owner pointed a finger at the guy that did the mod. He was sued, lost his business, house, car and finally his life.
@crashbandicoot4everr
@crashbandicoot4everr 11 месяцев назад
@@12voltvids Yeah as a general rule you don't modify customer's stuff especially when it's a risk of fire hazard. I've seen "technicians" jump fuses with aluminum foil in TV power supplies, or wire the backlight LED bars directly to the mains rectifier LOL.

The double diode might be gone. But what is more worrying is that the fan and motor is not spinning good. If you spin it with the hand it should spin several turns, this one seems to stop too quickly. This might indicate something in the motor. The brushes or bearings might have a problem and the controller might detect this and shutdown. If the problem is the speedcontrol, it is possible to bypass it.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 11 месяцев назад
The trigger switch throws a short across the motor wfrn released. This turns the motor into a brake stopping it quickly. Squeeze the trigger and sound and ur turns freely

Ah, yes, Milwaukee vs DeWalt, the eternal battle. Depends on which big box store you shop at I guess. Both look like cheap crap to me these days. My Dad's old Milwaukee drill weighs like 25 pounds but it never gives out if the battery still holds a charge.

@@12voltvidsMilwaukee drills from the last decade are hot trash. Their keyless chucks are fragile. They were caught with their pants down when they cheapened their impact wrench design without changing the product model number after every single unit would fail within minutes. It was a major fiasco involving tens of thousands of very expensive impact wrenches.

@@hochhaul I have a new fuel impact driver and drill in my work truck. Use it every day never have had any issues. Have had it 5 years now and it's been dropped from heights more than once. Got a soft landing once however. Dumb ass customer was standing under my ladder when the cordless driver dropped from my tool belt and hit him. 2 inches over and he would likely have had a fractured skull. My response was, that's why you don't walk under a ladder.

I set up a Meanwell power supply with a dummy dewalt battery. I think I just had to put a 10k thermistor on one of the pins to ground or + , to fake out a thermistor. I may have also had to fake a few 5S mid- string voltages using resistor dividers. It was a while back, but has worked on every 20V dewalt tool I've connected it to. On this specimen, i would probably just add a high current switch like the ones salvaged from microwave door lockout mechanisms and just make it a single speed blower. And tell the owner not to overly run it down and put the battery immediately back on charge after any extended use...

@@12voltvids ok got it - yeah i thought it was for a friend not a client.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 11 месяцев назад
@@GannDolph wouldn't do it for a friend either. Same reason. Here is the problem. Something goes south unit catches fire. Property damage occured. Fire investigator pinpoints origin, piece of equipment caught fire. Now forensics examins it to determine what the fault is (possible recall ) determine it was modified. Insurance company that is paring for damage gets involved going to cancel insurance friend turns on you and tells company who modified. Now lawyers are involved they have someone that is liable. As I mentioned before a fella i knew that operated a local TV shop back in the 80s, one if the competition used to modify many TV's, namely do things like add a/v inputs and headphone jacks. A TV he modified caught fire and the house burned down. I don't know if the mod caused the problem or something else but he got sued. Iost his business and his house in the ruling. He had been a friend if my former boss. When this happened my old boss started freaking out and from that day forward any tv that came in that anyone had modified, like headphone jack installed the only way i was permitted to work on it was to return it to factory status or we wouldn't touch it. He was paranoid of being sued. It went even further than that. In 1992 the guy came and that used to run a local taxi company and he was looking for someone to remove a 40 foot tower on his property as he no longer had the dispatch radio. I heard the enquiry at the counter and I came out and told him i would take it for my ham radio. My old boss stepped in and tried to tell me i could because he would be liable because the guy would assiciate me with the store. He actually was so paranoid that he had a lawyer draw up paperwork to receive him of any responsibility if i as an employee caused any damage and had me and the guy sign it. This was all because of what happened to his friend. That settlement made us all aware that making any changes opened the door for lawsuits. One if the biggest mistakes old school techs made was replacing fuses with the resettable circuit breakers that TV's of the 60s had. TV's in the 70s and 80s used to pop fuses every time there was a power bump and people would ask if we could put in the red reset button the old sets used to have. Then when something did go wrong and the breaker pop people would keep resetting it untill something really burnt out doing far more damage and potentially creating a fire hazard. So no I won't mid anything for anyone no matter how much they offer. I don't need the work or money that bad. Same goes for hand building devices and giving away or selling. If it catches fire or shocks someone you could be liable.
