THE FINAL PART OF A FOUR-PART SPECIAL! In an era defined by sub-HD resolutions and 'challenging' performance, the concept of PlayStation 3 delivering on its promised 1080p dream seems almost ridiculous. And it's true that only a tiny proportion of the library rendered at full HD. And yet, in this DF Retro Special, 85 games are tested - and a majority of them target 60fps! If you consider the fact that 1 car of GT6 has more polys, effects, textures etc than the whole game of some of those indies, i would give GT6 a 2160 out of 1080p.

Please DF Retro on DOOM 3 and Half-Life 2 for the OG Xbox, probably the most graphically pushing games for that generation, let alone DOOM 3 was 480p and a locked 30fps all while featuring advanced lighting and shaders from ID Tech. I think Escape From Butcher Bay was also a game that pushed the OG Xbox hard. I remember these three games well and how they were touted as graphical masterpieces, because as a kid I was gifted a brand new Pentium 4 PC a few years prior to these games releasing that was great for a while but couldn't cut it for newer titles like Doom 3 and Butcher Bay, titles I badly wanted to play.

This DF Retro special series is astonishing! You did amazing work, John! I was anticipating each new one the past 4 weeks. The PS3 is near and dear to my heart! I've had innumerable wonderful memories with it. I still have one and lots of games. Theres several 1080p compatible titles that I have that weren't featured in these videos(2010 and 2011 had major titles with full HD support, which is fascinating) . I've been inspired to test them out myself now, and its an exciting undertaking! :)

I was like 'YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO' when I saw Sound Shapes. Marvelous game. It's liberating to see PS3 get the love it deserves, especially when it comes to the smaller games that I feel gave the console its 'soul'- that combined the variety of indies and big budget games (and free online!) that made the PS3 an absolute banger. Fantastic series, I had a PS3 close to launch, swapped to the slim in 2009 and still keep it hooked up. Despite many games being sub 720p and under 30fps (which made me play many cross platform titles on PC) the exclusives and that original PS vibe as you mentioned at the end of the video kept me coming back. The DF retro videos are truly amazing, I’d love if a compilation could be published on Blu-ray, I often rewatch many of the episodes and a physical copy would be great :) thanks again for the great content !

It's way less than the PS3, very strange considering how much better games ran on the 360, but the PS3 had more HD remasters and indie games while the 360 didn't even release with 1080p support.

A Xbox360 1080p series would indeed be very short. But maybe a 60fps + low input latency series for PS3 and Xbox360.

@@ka7al958 Games may have run better, but most devs wouldn't have targeted 1080p on 360 as much cause not every console supported the output. While with PS3, they all at least supported the output (if not the rendering in most cases).

@@drd7of14 which models of the 360 don’t support 1080p? The only anomaly I can think of is the pre-HDMI models but they did get a firmware update to support 1080p via component.

Very grateful for this four part miniseries. John...you made an excellent presentation showcasing these 1080p games for audience members who are curious enough to get games that fully support their 1080p monitors/tv setups. I have learn so much from this hardware than any other RU-vid channel. I guess the sweet spot of the 7th gen consoles has always been 720p as their target image quality. Interesting to see the dynamic focus from the ps2 and xbox had offered previously in counter balancing quality and performance versus the new era where game devs had diminished their concerns over the performance of the products. Excellent video. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Loved this series. PS3 was a console I never owned but was always intrigued by a large number of titles on it. What a great miniseries run this was. I think we kind of take consoles and their games for granted in their time, only to fall back years (or decades) later and realize that they might’ve been better than we originally gave them credit for. If I hadn’t just recently gone back to (re)building my Xbox 360 library, your work would’ve prompted me to grab a PS3. I still might do that, dish the road. Looking forward to what’s next for DF Retro. Job well done.

@The tricky tick 60 fps games. You gotta remember that there are 10,000+ PS2 games compared to the few hundred Xbox games. Sure the majority of ports ran better on Xbox but alot games were never ported.

@The tricky tick and have to remember that many PS2 titles had 60 FIELDS per second, not frames, it is wildly different than today. The Xbox was better because most games run on true 60 FRAMES because it allowed progressive scan on the majority of the game library, whereas the PS2 had a lot of games that were interlaced only

PS3 in 2022 is still a fantastic console to be gaming on. Even some online games still rock as you can still jump into some CoD matches in the more recent entries as well as load up a Battlefield 4 or Hardline match.

Absolutely! I own at least 6 of these things and while I have definitely moved on for the most part, the fact that PS3 games are only available on Modern platforms through streaming or emulation on a PC has me coming back to it to play the titles that are otherwise unavailable on newer platforms.

I hope there will be another series like this focusing on the most impressive PS3 games and why they are the most impressive. Wipeout HD was an absolute joy to hear about; especially with its clever trick of (intended) screen tearing hiding with its "use" of over-scan. I adore the PS3 and its SPUs and hearing which games use them and how would be amazing.

Rayman Legends really is technically impressive. I played it on Xbox 360/One/Series, PS4, PSVita and PC. Glad to see the PS3 Version also didn't suffer and runs just as well. It looks amazing on everything and was always such a joy to replay. The smoothest and prettiest 2D plattformer in my opinion. Really hope we see a new Rayman someday.

Not considering the power on tap at the time it was developed it wasn't. It's very rare consoles are ever technically pushed to their true limits and 2D was conquered a few console generations before Rayman was even released. Check out Rendering Ranger R2 on the Super Nintendo, now THAT was technically impressive.

@@Longlostpuss Rayman Legends is not a simple 2D game. The level backgrounds, some enemies and parts of the environment are partially rendered in 3D. It also plays a lot with lightning effects and uses a lot of high definition assets. I remember having struggle when I tried to play it on an old graphics card when it first launched. A game like Ori and the Will of the Wisps which used similar techniques struggled to maintain 60fps on Xbox One when it first launched. Games like Hollow Knight also only run in 720p on Nintendo Switch. 1080p with steady 60fps is not granted just because it's 2D. We also so some other relatively simplistic games suffering greatly because of the PS3's different architecture. The flawless PS3 Version of Rayman Legends really impressed me.

@@non_one_c Everything struggled on that toilet XBox One console, it could barely run Minecraft. Look, I'm not saying Rayman Legends wasn't a very nice looking and playing 2D platformer, it was, all I'm saying is that for how those consoles were designed around the time it was being developed, they should have been easily able to cope with the game, as 2D technology has always seen gains with every console generation and is technically the least demanding of their capabilities. To put things into perspective - the Wii U was said to be a weak console compared to the XBox One and PS4 and yet it churned out a mightily impressive port of Rayman Legends no problem. Post say 5th gen consoles should not be struggling with 2D games at all, no matter how ambitious. It also comes down to specific architecture as well of course, but 2D should be like lifting some warm up dumb bells generally for a powerhouse console capable of running 3D very well.
