The DGT e-board has been a reliable companion for many years, providing a seamless bridge between the traditional game and digital capabilities. Its sturdy build and straightforward functionality have earned it a solid reputation among players.
However, as technology advances, newer options offer enhanced features and compatibility with modern devices. While the DGT e-board still serves its purpose well, those considering a purchase may find better value in investing in newer brands that incorporate the latest advancements in chess technology.

Good video. I have bought several over the years. And given at least one away to a chess club when I hadn't used it in like forever. The latest one I got was in 2020, during COVID, and was the top of the line with bluetooth and a DGT 3000 Pi computer/clock...you know...COVID...stuck at home....dreaming of playing real, over-the-board chess...sigh. I just got it out again and there is still no MACOS support (officially) and looking through the Windows installation instructions, I think it would be easier to beat Magus in a pickup game in Washington Square than go through the installation of the bluetooth on a current Windows machine...plus I don't have Windows or even Parallels anymore, so there's that. I will check out the Square OFF Pro board. BTW, totally agree on the inconvenience of the HUGE size. Can you see someone dragging this to a casual meetup and plopping it down on a table...and then losing!!! If you bring one of these along, you damn well better win!

hah thanks for the comment. I had problems with the bluetooth drivers as well. I had to change the configuration on the drivers to even allow it to connect by selecting some compatible mode that allows for older connections. I didn't have to do that in the past. I also use mac's and you're right the fact that it doesn't work there at all is another pain. I do have a windows laptop I connect to but it should be universal support regardless of operating system. I haven't seen the square off but I'll take a look at it. Let me know if you get one. I'm looking at the chessnuts right now. I think I might get the smaller plastic one so I can take it to the club and look over some of my games.

You didn't tell us or show us anything! Will it work with an iPad, or phone? So us how it look on devices. We came here because we want THAT board not some other board. Does the software tell you when you checkmate or in check or made an illegal move?

Thanks for the comment. This was my impressions and review after owning it for a long period of time. I did do a demo video more recently that highlights how responsive it is in a new version of fritz as someone had requested it. There are a lot of video's that demonstrate the function's, but I will say that the software it comes with is an old version of fritz which does show you when you make illegal moves it also allows you to play on the chessbase servers which I don't use. I use iphone as well and I haven't found a good app yet. I think the best bet is to use android and aart biks chess for android works well I used to use acid ape chess on android and it worked great as well but I haven't used that in many years. Since the board just relays moves to the chessbase programs you can set it to indicate illegal moves and checkmate, it will also speak them aloud. I think my point was ultimately that this is a great study board to have at home and to play around with chessbase programs but if I was going out and about I want better reliability and more features and it looks like new boards are offering that.

@@tylerkacsor okay thanks for the info this is what I'm looking for! I'll most likely go with this board because I like the craftsmanship

@@IMUHBOXER Nice you'll love it. I got it because at the time it was really the only good option, and the sets looked so nice during all the super gm tournaments. I agree with you and think that the craftsmanship is the best currently their boards and pieces are just too nice to resist. Is this a tournament set for home or will you travel with it? I'm looking to get a smaller board for analysis and travel. I play at the club every so often and it would be great to capture the games and not risk having my DGT somehow broken.

@@IMUHBOXER Awesome. Well, you'll love the board. I wish I could get my family into playing but I haven't had any luck yet. I bought it as a beginner as well. You can't go wrong with a quality board. Enjoy it and let me know how you like it when you do pick it up. I've seen some people say the white pawn app is good. I'm going to try it out in the next week or so.

I like the DGT Smart Board. It's quite a bit lighter and easier to take on train to parks, cafes etc for meetups around NYC. I mainly use it for recording blitz and rapid games during meetups with friends. Only issue is that I have to carry a phone sized power pack due to no internal battery.

I somehow missed the DGT smart boards when I was looking for new boards and instead saw the pegasus. This looks like a full sized board? Very cool. I'll take a deeper look at this as I'm still looking for something new to take with me to the club as well. How do you like it for recording rapid and blitz? Does it work well? Do you bring a tablet or phone to connect to it as well?

@@tylerkacsor The DGT Smart Board is essentially a lightweight version of the standard "big" DGT e-boards, both in the sense of physical weight and of price. It's thinner and lighter, the surface is plastic (but decent looking which, sadly, is not so much the case with the plastic pieces set). But otherwise it works exactly the same as the wooden e-boards (current version with USB Type-C connector). It is also full sized (I have even seen them used in Reykjavík Open tournament recently) and it's also compatible with all existing electronic piece sets from DGT. If you already have a wooden e-board and don't want to get rid of it, it probably makes little sense to buy a Smart Board as all you get is a thinner and lighter board but no additional functionality. IMHO the product targets people who want a tournament size e-board but prefer something less expensive and/or easier to transport than the wooden DGT e-boards. If you want a fancier board for online play and don't mind smaller size (or prefer it), Pegasus is probably more suitable choice (or similar boards from other companies).

Hi Tyler, which newer boards which are already on the market would you recommended? Do you plan buying a newer model? Thank you.

I am looking at grabbing a new board in the near future. There is a lot on the market but I think right now the Chessnut AIR is a pretty good value. Its smaller and plastic which is kind of what I'm looking for so I can take it around to the club and not worry about it. It's also easier to just bust out and use vs. the current dgt board which at tournament size is too large for regular use. I like that the air is cheap and uses a phone app or computer. I don't really want any built-in computers personally. I'm also curious to see the smaller DGT boards and the chessup 2 which is currently in kickstarter. What I'd really love is a new chessnut air with better LED Intergrations but I guess you can't have it all. Are you looking at any or do you have one already?

Hello! Could you please record an explanation video: two real people (or one person, playing white with the left hand and black with the right hand) are playing chess with Dgt's electronic chessboard. Can you connect the chess game you are playing to the computer? After that, the chess game screen or real-time game information can be imported into a certain chess website or chess Ai to see the Ai's evaluation of a certain move they are playing (good chess, bad chess, single exclamation mark, double exclamation mark, single question mark, double question mark, and the + - score bar of the black and white square, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down), which can very intuitively let users see whether each move in the game they are currently playing is good or not, and if not, then the correct move is where to play (click the mouse, A series of follow-up changes can come out). Can you achieve it? Looking forward to your explanation video, thank you.

Yep I was off today so I shot a little overview for you with Fritz. You can use any program though. It should be posted tonight.

@@XIAOBAIZHANG-ym8pn my pleasure. DGT is a great board and one of the nicest looking in my mind which is important if its on display. The software could be better but if i was doing it all over again I might go for the chessnut boards due to cost. I definitely don’t regret this board it’s still great I think I also just want something a little smaller to take around. It’s always a toss up.

Great video mate, I agree with you on this one, top quality board and pieces but the DGT lack of support for the board is lacking, I asked DGT to include these boards with in the DGT PEGASUS App but got no reply. It seems to be left up to third parties to do like Picochess, White pawn app, chess for android. Big shout out to these guys. I have got a Square OFF Pro board for online play. The built in battery makes it easier to turn the board some thing to consider when buying. More difficult if a cable is connected. The likes of Chessnut Chess computers will leave DGT behind. DGT must do better.

Thanks and I fully agree. The board is amazing but the new entrants especially Chessnut seem to be crushing it lately. I'm thinking of getting one to try the functionality so I can play my Lichess Classical league on it. DGT could so easily improve the functionality it doesn't make any sense to me. I haven't heard of the white pawn app I'll have to look it up. If DGT doesn't get its act in gear I could see them losing their footprint in the pro chess space over the next few years. People and organizers who are looking to get new technology in the future will definitely have to think twice.
