While the lower camera angle is bad for the overview, it shows how incredibly low and fast the shots are, which is very impressive. From the usual camera angles, one does not see that so well.
Maze looked amazing! He had great footwork, picked great angles to win points. Usually in these types of games, the one who can attack first has the most advantage to win points and often do. When Ovtcharov beat Zhang Jike, he was able to attack first, but when he played Ma Long, he was unable to and lost that match. Maze also had great defense with his blocking, he just simply was amazing in this match! :)
After watching a few different matches between these two, I've found that Ovtcharov, despite being top 10 in the world now, has had lot lots of trouble agains Michael Maze. Maze beats him more, and even the losses are either 4-3 or 4-2, yet Maze has been on and off the table tennis scene and not doing so well before. I've also noticed that when these two match up, both of them have a ton of trouble receiving each other's services. Credit definitely due for Maze though, he yard great and was too strong for Ovtcharov here. I'm sure it's just style and maybe mental strategy issues, but if Ovtcharov can steal matches from Zhang Jike, Yan An, Jun Mizutani, and other top players, surely he should manage a solid win against Michael Maze.
I really wish maze didn't stop playing, I remember when ML beat him and made him look silly...but MM was such an amazing player, he wiped TB out and truly showed us that he was indeed a great player not to be underestimated
Maze is back, which is a good counterpoint to these chinese table tennis machines. I always thought that he will have a come back. I am not sure if he will be good enough for the very top, but I like his nowerdays self-confidence he was lacking the last years.
It's a wonder Maze doesn't have more injuries. He's got some of the most awkward footwork I've ever seen. At least he won. Maybe it'll shut O. for a bit. Gads he's noisy as hell
From what I remember, he had a string of knee/hip injuries that kept him out of the game for quite a while. You can always see his instability manifest in sudden, unexpected changes of movement.
