@@matOpera Not every lyric tenor can sing Verdi’s Gustavo, Alvaro, Puccini’s Cavaradossi and Calaf well, but Di Stefano mastered all these 4.

@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 Yes. I think as Alvaro, he sang better than many of the tenors who had voices more suited to the role. His 1955 “La vita è inferno” live from La Scala could be the most inspired interpretation of the aria ever recorded.

Unfortunately, "La vita è inferno all'infelice" from Verdi's La forza del destino was copyright-blocked, so I have had to excise it from the video :(.

What made Di Stefano lose his voice so quickly, compared to other tenors of his time?

Basically he sang roles which were too big, notice he forced his voice to sound richer and darker. Over time it just got more raspy and harsh.
