Diagnosing My 3.2L Porsche 911 After Fresh Top End Rebuild - What Went Wrong?

Now the best part, driving my rebuilt 3.2L Porsche engine and enjoying every minute of it. This engine needed a top end rebuild after cylinder #5 was completely dead. While I was in there I took the opportunity to refresh the engine cosmetically too. I'm really happy with how this 3.2L motor drives, but I did a bunch of very detailed checks on the fuel injection system to make sure that the car will run for many trouble free miles.

Tom. When you get ready to do the AC look at the EPA SNAP list for some of the newer gasses. There are a couple newer HFC compounds that are way more efficient than 134. They work at lower pressures and that 3-4 times the thermal conductivity. I did an older CFC conversion, with HFC-409, I had 38 degree air at the vents, keeps the ice tea cold. You may need to go to a HVAC shop for the gas, but much better in the long run. Also I just ordered a laser welder for the for the next 356 project.

Ok, good to know? Compatible with R134 compressors? Curious about your laser welder too. Sounds cool.

@pyrogenusa Is there a place in SoCal that charges hfc409? I was considering just doing r12 (I’m actually certified to work on r12), but would prefer to use a more modern earth friendly option.

I really enjoy your rebuild series. I have owned my 993 for a couple of years and I am still learning so much about the air-cooled 911s. Good to see the readings after the car is warmed up, I was always concerned with the oil pressure reading, rather it is telling me my engine is healthy or not. Thank you!
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 месяца назад
Thanks for watching! No worries about the oil pressure dropping when the temps go up. This is normal as the oil gets thinner and the RPM's are low. You should have roughly 1 bar for every 1000 RPM's and max of about 4.5 bar. This is normal.

Really great outcome. Interesting that it idles so nicely at ~14.7 AFR (with what amounts to batch injection.) Wise move on vetting the rentals more closely I think 🙂

Thanks, it drivers great. 14.7 is the only way these engines will pass CA smog. It runs at 14.7 until the engine is under heavy load and then it gets richer. The DME is messing around with timing at idle too which helps keep the idle stable.

I put the Kuhel/Griffiths barrier hose on my 73.5. Perfect fit, even with the Sanden conversion. Haven’t had to add refrigerant in three years.

Great, good to know. My local hose shop rebuilds and tests these hoses too, but either way I'll share what works hopefully.

Thanks for a great video and the detailed explanation of the ftech9 ecu. I’ve got one on order thanks to your channel, and can’t wait to data log.

Cool, the ftech 9 dme is so helpful. Many of these charts were made from a data log and graphed in excel, but you can also graph this stuff in real time. It's amazing.

@@GarageTimeAutoResto that’s awesome. It’s a bit beyond my ability at present but I’m wondering / hoping there’s a way to get this data on a round screen to replace the clock. Maybe arduino reading obd2? First step is the ftech and making sure my car is running tip top. Fuel lines and five o injectors going in soon but want to data log first to compare.

@@GarageTimeAutoResto hope you are great. Follow up question, did you weld in the wide band or did you have a shop do it? Asking as I’m looking for a recommendation to have mine done in SoCal and hoping to find a place that knows these cars and won’t hack it up.

I welded it in. Find a shop that does TIG welding. Probably cheaper if you remove the cat and walk it in.

What would be a good project Porsche to look for. Never done air cooled. Never done carbs. But willing to learn.

I like the 78-89 Porsches. They are pretty easy to work on and still have that vintage feel. The 3.2L engine is a great engine. The 3.0L CIS injection is a bit of pain but they run well when sorted. My advice is don't buy a rusty one.

Thanks for the follow up on your rebuild. Love the detail. Can the F9T DME be left in the car all the time or is it only for Diagnostics? If so do you see any issues with installing the FT9 DME in CA car and passing smog tests? Of course this is assuming the car passed the test before I send the DME in to be modified.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 месяца назад
You leave it in. My red car passed California smog with it installed. It uses all the stock chips and maps. This silver will pass easy when the time comes. (Every two years as you know)

Oh would love to rent this car. Sounds SWEET! Are you sticking the O2 sensor for that AEM AFR gauge up the tail pipe? Does that give a good accurate reading? Need to get some AFR readings off my vintage car.
@GarageTimeAutoResto
@GarageTimeAutoResto 3 месяца назад
Ok, I'll post it on Hagerty driveshare soon. No! don't just stick the O2 sensor in the tailpipe. You need to weld in a bung as close as possible to the engine. Go back and watch the whole video. I showed where the O2 sensor is.
