Thanks for a good word! not sure how fast a repair Chanel has to grow but I assume majority of views are coming from one time "I have a problem" viewers.. sadly repair is not the hot topic maybe when the "right to repair" will get more movement.. and I should definitely improve by uploading some more content.. so if you have some possibilities to share the videos/knowledge I would appreciate the help :)

Whenever I hear these symptoms I suspect water inside.. take it apart and the motherboard off it's casing to inspect the back side. And check my other videos for water damage repair. Other suspect could be the battery try to exchange or power up from external 4v power supply.. hope this helps!

I haven't fixed it yet, but your videos are SO HELPFUL. When I first opened the brush I felt overwhelmed but I feel more confident now. I haven't found the problem yet though. Remove the motherboard from the frame a lot of times main damage to the motherboard is on the under side. Then check with multimeter all the points that I showed in the video. Water damage is tricky but doable ;) good luck!

First of all I would like to thank you for your fantastic video on the philips sonicare. This is by far the best content I have found on the net. With your help I was able to repair several toothbrushes within my family. However, I still have got three brushes with a blown fuse F1. In my point of view the F1 fuse is not self healing. Am I right that on a functioning brush the F1 should have connectivity? I would like to replace this component. In one of your videos you said that you ordered spares for the F1 fuse. Have you got a specification for the F1 fuse?
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 3 года назад
Thanks for the good word. If I remember correctly it has a letter P on it so internet says it should be up to 3A I ordered a lot of different sizes from AliExpress and still didn't got the correct size (smd measurements has imperial and metric scales too.. can you believe it..) so I used the smallest fuse that I got and it works. Yes a good fuse has to have continuity. But if it blew, it could also indicate a burned MOSFET.. check those too..
@123Poppa321
@123Poppa321 3 года назад
@@letsfixitgarage Thanks for the quick response. Really 3A? I did not investigate yet but I was aiming for a 500mA fuse. Thank you for your advise about the MOSFET. I thought the fuse was there to protect the mosfets from getting burned. But now I'm going to check those as well.
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 3 года назад
@@123Poppa321 yes I was surprised too but you can check the writing on the fuse and Google "smd fuse values" it will be 2A or 3A, fuse has to take in to account peak values.. And usually fuse burns when something bad happens on the board to protect from burning everything down :) and from what I saw usually (but of course not always) MOSFET is the cause why the Fuse burned through.. and if you had water inside be sure to check pcb tracks I have a whole series on water damage repair :)) if needed check them out..

You have an extra motherboard for the diamond clean version? I got mine working again but then I saw smoke from the mosfets. Needs a new board was a water failure. Happy to send it to you if you want parts too and think it is just failed. @letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 3 года назад
Thanks hope it helps a lot off people :) yes it is discouraging first time when you do it. There is no trick just pull it apart strongly. There are two plastic clips beneath it, but even if you break them when you put everything together the bottom cap will hold everything in place so don't fear and pull it apart ;)

Great videos! I have an HX8910 where the battery was old and not holding charge anymore, otherwise worked fine (with some repairs to the tip assembly). I replaced the battery, and did not know to desolder JP1. Now when I press the main button it does not turn on at all. If I place it on the charger, it will flash like it’s charging, then after about a minute, all LEDs start flashing very quickly. Tested new battery, it’s showing the correct voltage. Fuse shows continuity, buttons also. My board looks different than the ones in your videos (8 programming pads, no test pad next to power button, 6-pin MOSFETs). No sign of water damage on the top (rubber seals and all were in good condition). Haven’t taken off the board yet to inspect the back but want to see if you might know what’s the issue before I do that and maybe further damage things! Have you worked with this board before, or seen the issue with not turning on and all lights flashing quickly on charger after 60s? Did I maybe short something when replacing the battery? Thanks for any help
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 2 года назад
It could be a lot of things.. maybe charging chip is dying maybe some traces are damaged and this gives false signals to the chip.. I have repaired one like yours but not with your simptoms.. visual inspection for any obvious damage on both sides of the board and maybe check if it discharged on its own - that could indicate some short circuit on the board.. sorry to say it, but it's easier to diagnose board that's completely dead then when it's misbehaving..

I took a look at the Fuse links in your description. The 2A one pointed to 0805 fuses; I got some but they are a bit larger than the one it’s supposed to replace (also, the one that failed has a P printed on it… does that mean it’s 3A?). The link to the “smaller fuses” in your description is no longer working :( - can a 8050 actually work here? Thanks!
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage Месяц назад
Yes they are slightly bigger as original but if you apply flux and have good magnification to see where the fuse lays it's possible to solder it in, not to difficult. 2A is fully enough. Have made some measurements that it runs normally at 600ma if I remember correctly. There are some older comments with precise digits.

But the head will vibrate shortly when the brush give the timing signal to change the brushing location. I could also get the vibration when i press the button for 20 seconds while the brush is on the charger block. The batterie showed 3.6v and I don't seem to have a short on the mosfet. Since I could get the momentery vibration , I could say that the electronic drivers are ok. It look like a malfunction of the frequency output from the MCU. I don't think that you bridget it. It could mean that one of the chips has a short inside. So you will need a donor board to replace the defect component. And to pinpoint either go with finger from component to component or take a receipt paper (receipts are printed on thermo paper) and press and hold it on the board and when you lift it, it will have a "print" of the hot component.. or a flir thermovisor is of course the handiest in this diagnostic step ;)

@@mariabraach3153 did you found any signs of water inside? If any usually there is more under the Mainboard to see it you have to take it off the plastic frame. Sometimes when the toothpaste buildup is extreme it tears the button sealing and water can get inside through button not only sealing. From my experience draining battery is a sign of water damage usually battery holds long and strong with this toothbrush.. so either way to look further you need to take the motherboard off the frame and check for any corrosion signs or defect components.. it's not an easy task.. and sadly for now I don't have any advice on charging circuit diagnostics.. another option could be if the toothbrush functions get the wires from battery terminals and charge it with externall charger.. but it's not an elegant solution and water rightness will be compromised..

@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage Год назад
thanks for the question! and no its not silly ;) Diagnostics always look easy on videos when someone presents a solution in few minutes. Behind it, there is hours of trail and error... what you do if you don't have a schematics? In this case when we have a simple PCB with visible traces you can follow them by simply observing them and ringing through in continuity mode, to see if traces are not damaged. In multilayer design usually you lose this possibility. Sometimes you need another working PCB to check good values of component or traces if they are not visible.. sometimes you exchange components to see if they are bad or some other component influences behavior of a good component.. as said diagnostics is really time consuming process to be the first and show the solution in 5 min to others.. of course with practice and experience you will get faster in knowing what to look for and where to look for, but still every devices is designed by different people and in electronics there is multiple solutions for the same problem :)

Dis you inspect the upper rubber seal by removing the plastic cap? If you found water inside it will have a hole because of the build up other place where I found problems although not that often is the on/off button. This should be inspected to. If you keep the upper seal clean the seal is water tight and no problem whatsoever. Of course new design (flat rubber seal) could be an improvement but repaired few of these too.. so that's the only part that needs inspection and maintenance..

Hello, Nice video. Though, I don't think it directly covers the common fault when the working and fully charged toothbrush just stops vibrating. That mostly happens on the excessive shaft load (when you press the brush too hard against your teeth). But in my case, it is very prominent, and happens in some extra strong vibrating modes (like cleaning mode) even when the toothbrush is not in the mouth. I understand that it is most likely triggering of some sort of overload protection. Can you address that fault please? What is most likely cause of it? How to get rid of this? Once again - there is no obvious mechanical or electrical damages, the battery is fully charged, and yet the toothbrush stops by itself. After it stops, I can start it again with the button, and it stops again, after some while, different every time. The gap between electromagnet and permanent magnets was adjusted to 1mm. Oh! One more thing: when I gently grab and hold (but not too tightly) the vibrating magnets (the part closest to the electromagnet), then this fault happens much more rarely. So restricting the vibration seems to improve the behavior (in my case at least). Any suggestions? Thanks.

I wouldn't call your defect as common one.. didn't had a chance to see something like that.. so I can only suggest what I would do.. as the defect is not permanent only exchanging of components would be a useful way of identifying the problematic part.. lets say I would exchange the whole electromagnetic part just to eliminate any mechanical fault in this part.. but for me as usuall the more possible cause seems as it is water damaged.. is the seal in good condition? have you opened and inspected the inside? As said before main water damage is usually on the back side of the PCB..

@@letsfixitgarage Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I have opened and inspected the PCBA - I am experienced with board debugging and repairs. I have even taken off the PCBA and gave it a good clean with isoprop, after the good visual inspection and multimeter check. Nothing obvious from the electrical point of view. Unfortunately, I don't have another toothbrush, in order to exchange the blocks, so will have to do a lot of guesswork here. Before we go on, I should clarify that the toothbrush I have is a Philips Sonicare, but NOT the model you are using in all your videos (HX9340 with the square butt and five white LEDs). Mine is an earlier model, HX6710, with the oval butt, green LEDs and only two modes of operation - "Clean" and "Clean & White") What makes me think that it is probably a mechanical fault is that the occurrence of the fault reduces if I hold the shaft with my hand, therefore changing the mechanical load on the shaft (and therefore changing the electrical back-emf feedback in the electromagnets). I may be completely wrong here, of course. The top rubber seal is in a reasonable condition, but I don't think it's relevant as I have opened the brush, and gave all parts (mech and elec) a very good cleaning, plus I disassembled and then re-assembled all mech/elec blocks. I now operate it in a good room environment, with no moisture etc... So, it is something not that obvious. I haven't looked at the signals with the CRO yet, but this is in my plans. My problem is I don't know how the electrical protection cut-off works in this brush - it may be an overcurrent (but I can't see any current sensing resistors there) or analyzing the shape of the back-emf pulses (and then they should sample the driving signals with the ADCs in the main PIC controller, which imho, would be an overkill). Anyway, all suggestions and ideas are welcome. Thanks again.

Well I can't comment on the working principles either.. didn't dive in that deep, as that kind of damage is quite rare.. I would suggest to get a broken toothbrush of the same model as you have and then try some swapping or repair the other one as this one will take a lot of your time :) I had few cases where I was testing pcb with multimeter and it looked fine, but when under load it was shutting down.. if I remember correctly I redid PCB tracks like I showed in these videos after water damage and then it worked.

@@letsfixitgarage Spent more time on that subj last night. The culprit turned out to be a battery itself. I traced the circuit a bit, and as far as I can tell now, there are no feedbacks from the coil driving signals to the micro. So, I guess, the protection against the shaft overload has to be done by simply sensing the battery voltage drop. Well... there is a fuse F1 as a last resort. Anyway, when I replaced the battery with the externally wired 18650 (I don't have 14500 around), the problem went away. That's a good example how difficult it is to comment and help in comments when you don't know the background.. it is very difficult to know what was already done with the unit.. thanks for explanation. In this case you could try to solder the brake and not simply bind it and check continuity if the coil doesn't have any further breaks.. but because the windings change and you don't know if more of the coil was damaged (shorting) it is better to change the coil with frame completely. If you want to have it as cheap as possible you could ad an connector directly to the battery and charge it with 1s li-ion charger bypassing toothbrush induction charger.. although this will void toothbrush water resistance for sure..

@@letsfixitgarage I see. Thank you for the tips. I will try to solder it back together and if it doesn't work I'll get a new one. Definitely learned from my own mistakes here. Have a good day, sir!

Warning ⚠️...if you purchase any sonicare Phillips get WARRANTY Im on my 3rd one, the stem keeps breaking... I thought maybe the kids dropd it the 1st time, but the stem broke on me in the middle of brushing 2X along w the power.... Now I got to apologize to my kids since I've been blaming them for dropping my toothbrush and breaking it and it's been a default this whole time.... SMH

Difficult to say what was the cause but yes water damage through upper seal and broken head or loose screw are the most common defects on these toothbrushes..

My brush is totally dead, battery voltage is 3.7, no vibration and no led lights in charger, fuse is ok.

At this point my only suggestion would be to take the board off, inspect and clean both sides. Check tracks to MOSFETs and the button.. that's the main things that usually is damaged by water in Diamondclean brushes..
