@@letsfixitgarage Slightly annoyingly I found this video only after I'd bought a new toothbrush, took the old one apart and yep, the brush rod screw was loose - no idea why they don't use some sort of threadlocker on the screw given the amount of vibration it is exposed to.

Hi there! Great review! You've just mentioned all possible problems and the possible workarounds with the Phillips Sonicare. I've had these brushes since a long time but keep on getting these defects. Main problem is decontamination with toothpaste as you mentioned. Hope Phillips can improve these water seals in the future.

Philips has a new type of rubber seal it's still quite new to have data will it hold up but it is quite promising, till this date I had only one brush that had water damage with the new seal..

Hey, thanks for this video. My concern was answered ~10:45 where (after 10 years never dropping it) I've dropped mine 4x in a couple weeks. From your description, it looks like it's a snapped / unrepairable head, which helps me plan. Thank you!

@@letsfixitgarage You were right. The magnet gap was closed, but everything else was spotless. The head's still very wiggly (I thought it was stiffer before) but re-gapping has it working. *Note* I don't think I have clips inside, seems a fatter plastic tab slides into a metal slot. Maybe an early design (~2009)? It all looks about the same to me _(personally was surprised to see RS-232 pads!)_ but happy to send pictures of insides if it's useful to you.

Sure send it to letsfixitgarage@gmail.com. if head is wiggly it can be retightened as well. If the screw is tight it could be that the whole electromagnet unit got damaged. Sadly this needs to be replaced, no way to repair it as housing is spot welded..

Hey, thank you so much for the interesting videos and for showing the typical malfunctions. I have a problem, which does not seem to be typical. I have a sonicare diamondclean 3rd gen. HX9340. It charges and all lights come on, when I press the button. But it does not operate the motor. The Mosfets are ok and I repaired all broken traces on the pcb. When I press the button, for a short time the "clean" led lights up, just as in normal operation. But very quickly the brush returns to the state, where it lights up all leds (just like, when you turn the motor off by pressing the button a second time). Then I found out, that there seems to be en EEPROM on the pcb (label U3). Seems to be an I2C EERPOM, because during startup serial data is transferred from and to the IC. I desoldered the EEPROM. Then the brush did a little more, than before: It stayed in "cleaning-mode", when I pressed the button. But here comes the tricky part: The motor coil is powered by a square wave of 156 us on time and 516 us period. In between there is exactly 100 us dead time. Every 30s the motor is driven by a signal with much lower frequency and becomes audible. I think this is the timer to remind you, that it is time to brush another part of your mouth. Do you know the purpose of the EEPROM? Do you think there might be a way, that we get in touch and exchange a dump of that eeprom contents? I suspect they store the resonant frequency of the torsion shaft inside the eeprom to operate the mechanics at their optimum. Maybe you have a clue....since you have repaired a bunch of those brushes. Would be very nice to hear from you. BTW: Great work! Thank you for sharing so many hints on these brushes. I know how much efford goes into producing videos like those.
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 2 года назад
Hi thanks for comprehensive description and deep dive in.. I haven't checked so deep to go in to eeprom.. had few cases similar like you describe but usually it was either half dead fuse, half dead MOSFET or half dead trace to the MOSFET. Again I had motherboards that I was unable to repair so I'm not a guru that knows it all, especially newer boards with small MOSFETs suffer much stronger from water damage.. if you would need to contact me, my email is in Chanel description.

Hi, have a diamond clean model hx939v. When powered on, "white" and then "sensitive" lite up and stay on for 45 seconds - battery indicator is fully charged/green. Unable to change modes or get to vibrate. It will vibrate if I reset clean learn (hold button down for 2 seconds while in charger). Used very little, all clean. These videos are very helpful. I have a short question: It seems like there is no suspension/flexibility below the head part. BUT: I just got my new sonicare smart and I was wondering about the gap between the brush and the device (there is a 1-2mm gap). So it seems like this is normal but I was pushing down the brush a bit forcefully. There was some kind of pushback when I pressed the brush down. Is this expected behaviour of the device or was I just about to break it? Not sure if I was just lucky or if this is by design. Because also when you exchange the brushes, sometimes pushing the brush down is also touching the device and then it pushes back so that there is this gap. I was just wondering how this is implemented/designed inside the device. I would have expected a suspension/spring kind of construction but it seems like there is nothing like that?
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 4 года назад
thanks. The gap is needed when you apply pressure on your teeth, the brush head flexes side ways, and this flex is designed. This is the main purpose of the gap so that brush head wouldn't touch the base of the toothbrush. Of course toothbrush takes some abuse, but I would say you were lucky :) it's not designed to have any flex in other direction and usually if you drop it on the head it can be damaged in several ways some are repairable as in my videos explained some need part replacements as they brake..
@YetAnotherUser0815
@YetAnotherUser0815 4 года назад
@@letsfixitgarage I actually think now after watching more videos that I did not push the head down, but the whole upper part above the battery. There is a spring much more below (see here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BB1zvvNRUek.html or more clear here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VkRSW-h4Z-Q.html). So I think there is some mechanism that allows to push the whole upper part up and down a tiny little bit (but it moves everything including magnet except battery).
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 4 года назад
If you are talking about a spring between battery and electromagnet then my impressio that it's purpose is to apply conatant pressure to the upper seal so it wouldn't leak water and not for other purposes :) but you are right it will give in a little bit.. but if you press to hard the two screws will give in and you will have to repair the electromagnet stuck to the magnet problem..

@letsfixitgarage

From experience if it doesn't turn on it's usually water damage.. ruber seal ok? Check my other videos regarding water damage I show what traces usually corode away.. and you could try to take it off from frame usually water damage is seen underneath. Oh and if it really is not damaged by water you could try to disconnected power by removing solder jumper in the lower right edge of the pcb if you hold it vertically.. quite rare but it could be a stuck chip and this power reset helps.. but I would bet on water damage :)

I took my diamondclean apart and water got inside. No led light, it looks like 2 round pads near led are gone. This was a week after new battery replacement. Took it apart and cleaned. Checked traces and fuse and continuity is good. I wrapped new coil wire to board, cutting out corroded part. Battery voltage was 1 to 2 volts charge and then dropping volts. I only have an nimh / ni-cad charger used for expensive rc cars where I can custom set charges, but this battery is a lith ion.
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 2 года назад
It's difficult to comment on water damage repairs but for voltage this is a Li-ion cell thats voltage range is 3.6-4.2v. so your cell is quite drained and if you say that it was just changed that means that you have a short on the board. You can locate it by connecting a charged battery and then touch around the and chips and feel which one heats up.. and you could charge the battery with a bench power supply 4v 0.2-0.5a but do check when you charge if the battery doesn't get hot..

Best thing that I recommend to everyone whom I repair their toothbrushes is not to let toothpaste to go the handle.. just lift the end of the toothbrush up and it will not go on to the seal or toothbrush itself.. it's a habit so it's difficult to train it if you are used to different holding but I would say is the most effective;) apart from that of course take off the brush head more frequently and clean it. If you have black spots on the seal change it ASAP don't clean it as it will damage it even faster..

its difficult to diagnose electronic defects remotely.. maybe you shorted something when you were fixing the loose head screw.. When I opened it, the magnet gap was indeed closed. I opened it but still nothing. I left it for charge because I haven't used it for 2-3months. Still nothing. Next to the F1 you have a positive battery point and next to the R6 the negative. Next to the R7 is the charging coil pins. But if you had water inside take off the whole board to inspect the bottom part. Majority of water damage is usually on the bottom side.

It's possible to repair ribon cable but you will need fine cables, soldering iron tip and good magnification. Search on RU-vid ribon cable repair there will be a lot of examples. If you have a donor toothbrush it's much easier to remove one from donor and apply to your brush. Other options is simply remove it. Toothbrush will work as normal just no lights..

I now have 2 with issues. On 1 there is some vibration but you press it against your teeth and there is no power even on "Deep clean" setting. No loose screw or anything broken at the top (did unscrew the top piece and check) + coil to magnet looks to have the right spacing? I would say it feels like it has lost rigidity as well as power. However, fiddling with it I've now broken the wires to the pcb :( 3:45 It came apart much better when you separated it here, definitely harder for me. I've ordered some basic soldering equipment so hopefully should be able to reconnect those. The second toothbrush works fine but only gives one or maybe 2 cycles of brushing after many hours of charging but still have more hope for that 1. I might just switch the battery over if nothing can be done about the 1st. I haven't removed this second from its casing yet but it does have a different design of seal at the top (newer version?), less material in fact, it's slightly dome shaped. Perhaps Philips recognised water damage was a problem although I can say the condition of mine (brush 1) is good, would always wipe with tissue after use. Any advice you have about these problems would be appreciated, thank you.
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 2 года назад
I would suggest the opposite. Take the electromagnet part from number 2 and solder it on nr 1 electronics. It seams that you have a defect electromagnet unit on nr1. They are not fault proof. And sometimes internally something brakes and the axis is either broken or fixation doesn't hold it in place.. sadly it is spot welded so no chance to repair it.. as for the second I would suspect water damage and motherboard failure. But as long it is partly working it's difficult to diagnose...
@cranebeg

@@letsfixitgarage Thank you for replying. When my soldering equipment arrives I'll have some fun with mix and match to hopefully create a working one :) I have a hunch though it's like you say inside the welded area. Last resort I will open that up just to see. I did a much better job of opening the bottom of nr 2 today, no damage at all this time, it even popped out for me ;) used the pointy ends of a few cable ties. No obvious water damage I'm pleased to say but time will tell. Thanks for your helpful suggestions, I'll follow up with my findings.

I'm getting ready to buy another sonicare, but on the off chance my problem is fixable here's what's wrong: I fully charge the toothbrush and it is on 'clean' mode. While brushing my teeth I don't have to push against my teeth very hard and the brush head stops vibrating against my teeth. The toothbrush itself is still making noise but the brush head is just sitting on my teeth and not vibrating.

Rust indicates water that got inside. But rust doesn't kill this toothbrush it can work with it. You should clean any loose rust in the gap between magnet and electromagnet if there is some debris this could be the noise source. And do check pcb of the toothbrush. As there could be damage that will make the toothbrush unusable. Especially on the back side..and do exchange the upper seal even if it looks ok..

@letsfixitgarage

If it turns on off randomly it means that water is already inside the button. You need to disassembly it and replace or clean insides of the micro button. (I have a video on that) and to prevent it just pay close attention to the upper seal don't let it get contaminated by the toothpaste.. if you see some build up replace the rubber seal before it breaks..

@@letsfixitgarage Hi there! Thank you very much for your reply. I've had 2 replacements in the last two years. I'm not quite sure what happens, but the toothbrush fails for some reason. I usually go to Philips for the warranty but I'm sure I'm out of the time period. I figured I would try a battery replacement. I purchased a battery off ebay, replaced it and it started working immediately. I then charged it overnight as that has been the instructions I've seen. The next day, it doesn't start up. I then purchased some batteries off amazon as I wanted to test to see if it was the batteries or the toothbrush. Again, replaced the battery with the amazon battery. Starts up, put it on the charger. Couple hours later to check, toothbrush not working. Today I have one last battery as I was going to replace a family members toothbrush, but wasn't so sure about the batteries. Again, replaced it and the toothbrush works. Now I'm just afraid that once I charge the toothbrush, it will stop working. My wife has had the same sonicare for years! Me on the other hand, have had constant issues. Seeing what you gather from this info. Thank you!

Hi, as I wrote before had only one similar case when you install a new battery some IC on the board starts to heat up.. and of course drain the battery. In your case I would suggest after installing the battery don't put it in it's housing touch around on pcb check if something heats up. If no, put it in charger and again touch the board if it discharges it has to heat up.. and don't throw those batteries away, they are perfectly good. Get a simple li ion cell charger from your local electronics shop and you can charge it up. Just don't leave them discharged for a long period of time as this damages the cell chemistry..if you have a power supply it's possible to top it up with that too, but there are some risks with that.. hope this helps!

@@letsfixitgarage So this time I did feel the pcb and found one of the chips did heat up. Turned it on two or three times to make sure it worked. I also didn't put the toothbrush on the charger and instead left it on my desk. I cam back to it after an hour or so and it is again not working. What do you recommend doing in this situation? Is the toothbrush faulty and just give up on changing out batteries? Really appreciate the quick feedback. Thank you!!!
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 3 года назад
Yes the element that heats up is faulty and needs to get replaced and the toothbrush will charge normally again. Questions is what that element is and will you be able to get it in your electronic shop.. you could buy a damaged one of eBay and resolder the component from the bad one.. but if it's a multiple leg it is a little bit more difficult as simple solder job..

You can find the battery by length and diameter measurement. But does it really need replacement? Usually problem is deeper in pcm of the toothbrush..

Hi there ! I was amazed by the impressive tutorial ! Unfortunately I'm desperate ... I cant get my toothbrush fixed. After measuring the tension of my battery, I discovered that the tension was going below 1V and that the brush was dead. I measured the battery on the pins of the electronical board and the tension was close to 0V. I took the battery off and measured it again. The tension seemed to increase again... Then I bought a new battery with around 4V of tension. I reinstalled it and it worked for half an hour. Then I discovered that the case was warming up. After 2 hours I discovered that the brand new battery tension was close to O again... I dont know what to do to fix the toothbrush :-((((( Can anyone help me to fix it? I have just one explanation : I used once a wrong faulty charger from samsung (2A) and after one night charging I discovered that the brush was dead. I thought that the faulty charger just killed the battery but with the new battery It's the same story. It works half an hour then the battery heats up is emptying itself quickly and the below minimum tension and the toothbrush is dead.... I just discovered that the + terminal is shortcutted with the - terminal ! How can it be? That's the reason why the battery heats up ! What's the solution? Many thanks in advance

It seams you have a short somewhere on the PCB of the toothbrush. My suggestion would be to take it apart completely so you would have only PCB in the hands then clean it with isopropyl alcohol from both sides. Check if there is nothing between component legs. Then charge the battery externally to full capacity and reapply to the PCB. Then check if something heats up, maybe the cleaning will help if not check what heats up (just poke around with fingers) and if you will find something exchange it..
