Multiple years late, but I'm actually looking into getting a dove - either a ringneck or a diamond- and I've been looking around to see what they're like. I have budgies and their constant chatter can be pretty annoying sometimes but dove coos are so soft and calming. I heard they're cuddly, which is potentially my favourite thing in a bird. My second budgie was like a little dog, he would sleep in your pockets and sit with you all day if you'd let him. The other cuddly one was my conure, who passed away recently hence why I'm thinking about getting another bird, and he loved me. Hated everyone else, but he would preen my neck and sleep on my face and everything. He was really cute.

my diamond dove passed due to a tragic accident. But our diamond dove was uncaged. One of the best experience that I had in my life was that she let me help her build a nest in one of the flower arrangements we had in our room. That bird was really attached to me.

Mark Rogers I'm so sorry she passed. that's such a sweet story, they are so loving. mine is really attached to me too, she only speaks to me.

I know what this is like. They really are a great bird. I would go away on business trips and she would know it and get real clingy. She knew my voice and the way I walked and would call out to me when she heard me. I would get another one in a heart beat if I knew I could get another one just like her.

Mark Rogers I think you could have an other great experience with an other one, they really get attached to their owners. it would be an amazing new experience with a new bird. they are amazing little doves.

Mark Rogers stepped on? toilet? dish water? ceiling fan? I am sorry! It has happened to the best of us. Learn from the mistake, but don't let it ruin your ability to love another bird. Get the youngest bird you can, or a pair and any babies they have will become attached to you . Don't give up though!

At first I thought I was watching a video of cucumber and I, we do exactly the same thing. She'll lay eggs nonstop, so I have to let her sit on them for more than a week so she won't run out of calcium.
@sugargliderfun
@sugargliderfun 9 лет назад
Ah that's so cute, it means she's bonded to you. Mine has a lot of eggs too, I have to show her when I take the eggs or she will sit on on nothing and one time she had 4. So now I show her that her eggs are gone.

Did they just start letting you pet them after eating out of your hand for a while? Mine eats out of my hand occasionally but still freaks out if I try to touch them
@sugargliderfun
@sugargliderfun 8 лет назад
It took a few months for her to let me pet her, she didn't have human contact before. Now I can do what I want with her and anyone can hold her or pet her. But I noticed that speaking to her is the most important thing, she works a lot with what she hears, when I talk normal on the phone she doesn't recognize me if I try to pet her at the same time.

Love your's. Can't really tell from here if your's a male or female. Looks like a female since the eye cere isn't that big from this view which I could be wrong since it's gray like a male and not brown. I recently picked up a juvenile Diamond Dove as well. It's only been three days and it's already tamed. Not scared of humans anymore and getting use to my presence.
@sugargliderfun

That's great. Yes she is a female, she lays eggs regularly and her gray is bluish also no brown on her. She wasn't tame at all when we got her and now anybody can pick her up.

That's awesome. Mine still tries to get away when it gets a chance to walk but stays still and let me pet it while sitting on my finger. Join the "Diamond Doves" FB group whenever you get a chance and share some pictures on there for us and check ours out as well. :)

Hi, my diamond dove is a male and he doesn't really let me pet him. It's not like he isn't used to me, he does bow coos and even climbs on my shoulder. Could he just not like being pet?
@sugargliderfun

Mariajose Salazar hi, do you know if he is captive bred. How long did you have him? Are you the person who takes care of him the most? do you know if he was bonded to someone else before or to an other bird? He will bond with someone at one point. All these factors could make the bonding process longer. It took mine a few months to bond with her and I would say a year for her to trust me completely. She was so scared of people she would hurt herself really bad. I hope it helped a little I could help more with additional details.
@MochaCocoaJelly
@MochaCocoaJelly 7 лет назад
I don't know if he is captive bred, but i have had him for 8 months now. I am the only one who interacts with the bird on a daily basis but he doesn't seem to mind others getting near his cage too much. I know that when I first saw him at the local petsmart he was very stressed and was running back in forth in the cage he was in.
@sugargliderfun
@sugargliderfun 7 лет назад
Mariajose Salazar He sounds like he is getting there. One thing that helped me and mine bond was to put some food in my hand and she would come eat and eventually lie down in my hand. I did that everyday. later I did that to introduce her to new people to. I hope that helps.

@sugargliderfun
@sugargliderfun 8 лет назад
Males have a different coo and have a bigger orange ring around their eyes. I do not own a male so I cannot say how they would be has a pet. My female was not tame before me and now she is addicted so I would think it would be the same with a male since they are birds that like being two (couple) so they get close to their humans.
@prenticemulley7290

sugargliderfun I have a male and a female. I know the male is a male because he coos at himself and tries to mate with himself.. Haha. But I just got a " female " now and her ring is darker and bigger than his I think. She also has a white tail and male has some gray on the tail.

She is so lovely!! Her little kisses are adorable..! I really want to have Diamond Doves some day, but I'm making a big move this year, so they will have to wait- plus I'm still doing my research on them. I've owned Ringneck Doves and Homing/Fancy Pigeons in the past.. :) What is her name?

What a sweetie! In my opinion a very underestimated typed of bird, one that can give you lots of joy if taken care of properly, for a VERY long time (15 to even 20 years). With that being said, and to be totally fair but with no disrespect, you shouldn't keep these birds single, i.e. without another diamond dove companion (preferably one of the opposite sexe, or if a female another female >> 2 males might lead to disaster, specially during breeding season). They are not solitary birds. It's a common mistake many ppl seem to make, most likely because the petshop told them it's okay to house them by their own. Note: breeders who tell you the same aren't breeding them to give them a proper birdlife but just to make a few quick bucks, just so you know. Many petstores do the same thing, sadly enough. That's why it's important to do your own research before getting ANY animal. At least you seem to take good care of her, and that's always a good thing. Thumbs up for that one! It takes a lot of patience and love to get them this tame, as they can be pretty skittish. I even think she might look at you as her mate (considering she's on her own). LOL Got 2 of those myself since yesterday, after months and months looking up information on them on how to take care of them and what their needs are. It's a male and female, or at least we HOPE they are (pretty difficult to see the difference in sexes when they're still young, and even when older it's still often a wet-finger guess until fertile eggs pop out LOL). We housed them in a big-bird cage with plenty of space for them to walk and even spread their wings. In the near future - when temperatures rise again - they will be rehoused to the greenhouse, into an aviary, together with a few other small species of birds they can get along with. They now seem to love their new (already bigger than where they came from) space, because within half an hour of being transferred they started to make their typical sound, enjoyed their new (proper) food and started to fly from one end to the other end while frantically training their wing muscles. We're not planning on taming them like yours is, the purpose is to just enjoy them from "a distance", and let them do their own thing. Though they are pretty "tame" already, as they don't go into full panic mode when I approach the coop and put my hand inside to check on a few things. :) Cheers and would love to hear an update on your lovely dove.

great little bird... how did you tame her? and how old is she? I have got a pair.. just got them about 3 weeks ago.. still trying to gain there trust.. some tips please!!! :)
@sugargliderfun
@sugargliderfun 9 лет назад
Hi, you can read the other comment for other tips, I am sorry i didn't see your comment. I got her a little more than a year ago so she is between 2 and 3 years old. the thing with these birds is that they get attached to one person. you got a couple so they are probably bonded to each other. correct me if they are not in the same cage yet. the better way I think you can get them to at least trust you is to bring them one by one in a small room like a bathroom let them fly and have some food in your hand and present it to the bird. but first get them accustomed to you, talk to them, sit close to the cage while doing normal not to noisy things. and don't hesitate if they need to be treated. mine when I got her she was so scared she would hurt herself in the cage I would take care of her and I think that helped with the process let me know if you want a video on how to hold a bird that need to be taken care of. also when she has eggs she does not want my husband near her eggs, so maybe they will be OK when they don't have any. let me know how it is now it's been a month.

hi, it took me about a couple of months after speaking to her all the time, I would approach her slowly. when she would feel comfortable with my hands the secret is to put food in your hand she even goes on strangers hand's now. when they have food of course. but I had to be patient and really gentle. Hope it helped.
