Are diamonds really forever? Well, not if you've been following the dramatic twists and turns as of late! Brace yourselves, because we're about to take you on a wild journey through the glittering world of diamonds. From soaring highs to plummeting lows, from natural gems to lab-grown marvels, and even a touch of international intrigue, this is a diamond saga that's as captivating as it is sparkling. So, if you've ever wondered why diamond prices are in a nosedive or why lab-grown diamonds are becoming the new craze, stick around because Ive got all the details in store for you. Lets get into it!
Greetings, jewelry aficionados! Today, we've got an intriguing tale to unravel, one that's shaking up the diamond industry and leaving many to ponder the future of this beloved gem. If you are new to the channel, I am a GIA trained diamond expert that spent many years in the business and now I help people learn how to buy diamonds Diamond prices are experiencing quite the rollercoaster ride. In fact, it's more like a downhill plunge.
You see, these precious gems have lost their sparkle in the eyes of buyers. Diamond prices have tumbled by a whopping 23.9% from their all-time highs in February 2022. Here are some numbers. 1 carat diamonds have lost 23.9 from last years time. .50 carats has lost 24.4% and 3 carat diamonds lost a 15.2% So, why are diamonds losing their luster? Well, let's rewind a bit. During the COVID-19 pandemic, diamonds, along with other jewelry, witnessed a remarkable surge in prices. People were ready to spend! People were Flush with cash from thriving capital markets, Bitcoin gains, NFT scams and economic stimulus programs, they were eager to splurge on meaningful gifts. When travel and dining out were off the table, luxury goods and jewelry stepped in to fill the void, gobbling up all that excess money.
But when the world began to reopen, It turns out that all that extra money went back into experiences, travel, and dining - anything but diamonds! Also, the economy is in a downturn. High inflation and interest rates continue to restrict middle America’s spending. D
Now, let's talk about the game-changer - lab-grown diamonds. They are chemically and optically the same as natural diamonds and they are exploding in popularity. One of the clearest signs of the traction being made by lab-grown diamonds is their share of diamond exports from India, where about 90% of global supply is cut and polished. Lab grown accounted for about 9% of diamond exports from the country in June, compared with about 1% five years ago. Given the steep discount that they sell for. according to Liberum Capital Markets that means about 25% to 35% of volume is now lab grown. Historically, they are at their most competitive price nw due to new advanced tech. 5 years ago, they were 30% off natural diamond prices and now with their prices sinking to 75% to 90% below natural diamond prices more consumers are turning to these lab-grown beauties, . it's like upgrading your flight to first class for the cost of an economy ticket.
To counter this trend, industry leader De Beers has taken aggressive steps, including substantial price reductions for 2-4 carat roughs.
Debeers typically resorts to significant price reductions as a last resort. However, the scale of these recent cuts is extraordinary, akin to a clearance sale at your favorite store. In June 2022, De Beers was charging about $1,400 a carat for the select makable diamonds. By July this year, that had dropped to about $850 a carat. And there may be more room to fall. Remarkably, lab-grown diamonds are altering the market dynamics, impacting De Beers' profitability. During the first half of the year, their profits plummeted by over 60%, and their average selling price followed suit.
In international news . The G7 economies are getting together to discuss imposing sanctions on Russias Diamonds meeting to discuss potential sanctions on Russian diamonds. Russia is one of the largest exporters of diamonds, In fact, Around one-third of the world’s supply of diamonds are mined in the Siberian region of Yakutia by Russian state-owned company Alrosa.

It isn’t a price collapse.. it’s coming down to what the price should realistically be at. Diamond prices are kept artificially high by controlling supply.

You couldn't be more wrong, millions of people live of this industry, from miners in Africa to polishers in India to dealers all over the world, as opposed to a handful of manufacturers that will monopolise the lab grown industry, think outside the box, i know it's hard sometimes.

@@williamsvohong2981 the marketing campaign for diamonds has people thinking that typical diamonds are rare and therefore command ridiculous prices. @samyezzeddine7436
@samyezzeddine7436 9 месяцев назад
@@RodSherwood1 Actually for a while already they're on the background with Alrosa, BHP, Rio Tinto and several other big players owning a big part of the production these days. Alos prices are based on supply and demand and are analysed and indicated by Martin Rapaport not De Beers. The reason they don't flood the market with diamonds is to keep this supply and demand chain on par as not to harm businesses and individuals that own stock or personal diamonds. U wouldn't supply the world with double the amount of iphones either cause it will brick their prices. DeBeers hasn't had any big marketing campaigns for a while now and if u just look at what they've meant for the economic growth of Botswana and its people you would think more objectively. I buy rough diamonds for a living and I support many small scale mining operations in Africa that give opportunity to people less fortunate than you who aren't protected by social security and need this industry to get by in life. Unlike what people still tend to perceive as a business based on tyranny and despair as it was during the time in Sierra Leone when the rebels used diamonds to buy weapons. Apart from those people there are thousands of offices, polishing factories, certificate centers, etc that employ hundreds of thousands of people. So yeh I think I'm good in the way I perceive the reality, it's just a make money quick scam by jewellers who make 80% on lab growns iso 20% on natural with a much lower investment. You're the one getting scammed in the end cause they're worthless the moment u leave the shop. Enjoy your plastic

True, I am from Asia. Diamond here do not have high value and not prefered by most in Asia because of low resale value unless diamond with good cut with certification. What in demand is real gold 22k or 24 k. So, Im kinda shock when I went to Europe to find out that gold jewellery there is low in gold content, mostly 18 k but price highly because of diamond. Sometimes the diamond is lab diamond not even have certification but sell price is crazy. The worse is jewelery from luxury brand. So high price.

I’m surprised that didn’t happen years ago when they first came out with the lab diamonds. For jewelry purposes the lab diamonds are perfect. No customer can tell the difference, especially that lab diamonds are clearer. For industrial use, the lab products are an obvious choice. The natural diamonds, especially those yellow or pink are possibly good for collecting, but those semi clear are not as rare as jewelers want us to believe and there is no reason why they should be expensive.

The real reason why the price of diamonds is going down is that people are starting to understand that the diamond is the most common of the precious stones. There are a lot more diamonds than coloured stones like rubies, sapphires etc. The reason the diamonds WERE so expensive is because their marketing was cornered by the De Beers company who had imposed a strict monopoly. @@deborahcurtis1385 Most crypto is a scam because it literally is just a ponzi scheme. The way it works is some influential person either creates or buys a bunch of really cheap crypto, then shills it on social media which then convinces their fans to buy into it. This buying action then drives up the price which initiates another buying frenzy by people looking to make a quick buck. The influential person then dumps all their crypto, selling it as fast as possible, making millions and crashing it's price. People then start selling off as fast as possible to make back as much money as they can before it completely crashes. The end result is that wealth is simply transferred from the less fortunate masses to the now even richer influential person. There are some staple cryptos that are not scams because they act more like fiat currency, where people more or less agree on it's price, but as you said it's very susceptible to outside interference. Bitcoin is always 1 law away from becoming worthless.

I started by buying Tanzanite twenty five years ago. In 1985 I worked in Kansas City and would walk by Tiffany's every day. They had the most beautiful stones in the window that were a dark purple blue color. I couldn't afford them but I never forgot them. In the early nineties I found a source for those beautiful stones so I started buying a piece at a time. I started educating myself about gemstones in general. I learned that diamonds were not a good investment but if I could buy gemstones only found and mined in one location that as the mines were running out of the supply the prices would increase dramatically. If you look at history when people were displaced and had to leave their country they would sew gold, silver, and gemstones into their clothing and use this to make a new start. Gemstones should be part of everyone's investment strategy. Thank God that's still a secret most people don't know!

To overcome the problem of fake diamonds, you need to bring the 'influencers' on board. Gift real diamonds to about ten or twenty influencers and have them gushing over the 'real diamond' they have been gifted and you will be amazed at the surge in sales - and prices - which will occur. Influencers are now the new Madison Avenue.

I also would appreciate if you tell about diamond serial numbers - mine don’t have those, or at least I don’t know about.

Glad I could help! The natural diamonds you have are likely not certified. Once certified, they have a laser inscription on the side of the girdle. Value is relative. Lab diamonds will not be bought from pawn shops or diamond dealers, only privates. Pawn shops and dealers only buy natural diamonds at a step discount. SO private is the way to go in any scenario.

More and more lab diamond factories are being built. Why should we buy a 1.5 ct lab diamond for $2,000 today, when there will be 10,000 more to choose from by Christmas? Jewelry Stores have been marking up their $500 lab diamond purchase to $9,000 vs. marking up their natural diamonds, by 30%. In 5 years that $9,000 stone will be worth ten dollars and the natural diamond will be worth 70%, of its original price.

I truly feel sorry for the men that MUST buy a new earth mined diamond from the "blue box" store because their fiance insists that that is the only true rock they will accept on their finger. There are so many great options now, that were not available even 10 years ago...moissanite and lab grown diamonds. Along with my favorite which is Brazilian earth mined diamonds that are heat treated to bring out clarity and color for a fraction of the cost...they are stones that come out of Brazil and are cut and processed of course in India. They are usually sold only in Silver rings not gold to keep costs down but the rocks themselves are true earth-mined diamonds. :)

You need to differentiate between common - usual mass good diamonds mostly used for engagement rings and extremely rare colored diamonds (red, pink, blue, green). Unless you can afford a rare flawless 25 carat+ white which is extremely rare you will not get a good return on it. Colored stones, and i mean good quality natural colored stones mentioned above are increasing in price ridiculous per year due to actually being rare. Just look at auction house results, and i am not even talking about the big player houses but small specialized houses that auction diamonds and you will not believe how prices have developed

I think the tell tale fact that diamond prices are manipulated is that you can get diamonds much cheaper if you buy them in bulk whereas something like price of gold has no impact on the quantity of gold you are buying. Price of gold will always be proportionally the same wether you buy 1oz vs 100kg
@OsirisDiamonds
@OsirisDiamonds 4 месяца назад
I wouldn't say diamonds get much cheaper in bulk. Diamond prices are very much set in stone. Traditionally, there are a handful of site owners that get first dibs on diamonds, then they set their price and it trickles down to several middlemen each adding a small percentage on top. To get a small discount you must move a lot A LOT of diamonds. In the end, diamond is a retail product, gold is not.

@@OsirisDiamonds Gold is sold as a retail product via 1oz bars/coins or even smaller fractional ounces from coin stores or bullion dealers that cater to retail investors. The premium on the 1oz at the retail level is typically 2%, maybe up to 5% on a fractional oz.
