Two stones- Diamond and Cubic Zirconia (CZ). One Natural and one synthetic, one cheap and the other can be very costly, one can last and the other has concerns with durability. Is there a clear winner or will it depend on the situation? That is the golden question of the day.
Both Diamond and CZ come with certain stigmas, stereotypes and misconceptions. some of these are positive, but others have very negative elements. The debate between these stones often comes down to the price conversation and whether diamonds are worth the much heavier price. Are diamonds still a viable option with such a seemingly inexpensive alternative?
We are looking into the 4 C’s of diamonds to try and find where the differences may be between the two most common options for sparkly jewelry stones.
Because there is such a massive price difference I suspect the debate and confusion will continue, but I hope this video helps with some of the common questions.

I know jewelers always say they don’t last, but I’ve had a cz ring for over 10 years. I wear it every single day and only ever take it off to put lotion on my hands after washing dishes. It doesn’t show any wear that I can see. No scratches, chips, and no loss in sparkle. Every time I visit my mother she asks me to look at it, because she’s always amazed at how good it still looks. I have diamond jewelry also, and I can tell the difference in the stones, but I prefer very large stones, so cz it is.

Leonessa Elitneg that’s great to hear you have had excellent luck with your stone. Even 10 years with minimal wear is outstanding! Unfortunately a lot of the rings I see with Cz have not had that fortune. Taking care of your jewelry certainly can make a big difference. I hope you have many years enjoying your ring!

@Ian S You got that right. Even if it lasts 1 year, you can buy a CZ every year for the rest of your life, with it still being a cheaper option that buying one diamond ring... Let’s face it, unless it’s a larger/large perfect stone, diamonds are completely overpriced because 99% of all the diamonds that come out of the ground each year end up in a vault to artificially keep the price up. If all the diamonds would end up on the market they’d be a dime a dozen.
@shirleypena4133
@shirleypena4133 3 года назад
@PacoVL46 Not true. Diamonds are rare; there haven’t been any major finds for over 20 years. Furthermore, there are no major mines on the horizon. Demand- particularly in China and India- is growing rapidly, and in the very near future we will see demand outpace plateauing supply. That means that people have a product that not only represents important life moments, but which will be worth more in the future than it is today- and will always increase in value. I have no idea who told you that 99% of all natural diamonds are ending up being 'shelved' in order to keep the prices up, but they are WRONG. Currently, 99% of all diamonds adequate for the jewelry trade get sold; with the majority of sales being done OFF the market. In contrast to the past, today only 1% of mined diamonds wind up being used in industry. As for your assertion that only larger/large stones merit value, you are dead wrong. America and Europe account for most of the world markets in which larger stones are preferred. In most other countries (especially Asia and India) SMALLER stones of HIGH quality are preferred, in contrast to America where larger stones of lesser quality are preferred.
@pacovl46
@pacovl46 3 года назад
@@shirleypena4133 yeah, they’re rare in comparison to other natural resources, but they’re nowhere nearly as rare as you think. According to the British Geological Survey the world produces annually around 121 million carats of gem stone quality diamonds. The 99% came from a documentary about the diamond industry. It might’ve been from Vice, not sure about that one, though, because it’s been years. In regards to the large stones, obviously the larger the stone is the harder it becomes to find one that’s perfect and therefore a large, perfect stone will always be worth much more than just it’s weight, on the other hand it’s much easier to find small, perfect stones that sell for their actual value because they can be had literally in millions of stores worldwide! And yeah, if the demand outgrows the supply the price will increase, but as of right now that’s not the case, yet, and there’s also the rise of lab grown diamonds that are literally indistinguishable from real ones that sell for far less and if diamonds become unaffordable people will start buying those for their engagement rings. Either way, your run of the mill small diamonds are extremely overpriced and it’s the demand that keeps the price up. Just like it is the case now with Rolex, Patek Phillipe and Richard Mille watches.

“Nearly every CZ is cut to a very poor grade”. Sorry but that’s not right. It’s important to note that as with diamonds, different grades of CZ are available. As a marketer of natural diamonds and diamond simulants, such as CZ, we readily obtain CZ which has a very good cut quality with optical symmetry that rivals typical mid-market diamonds and most notably diamonds where the cutter has prioritised maximum utilisation of material. Have you seen higher grade CZ, for example grade 5A H&A CZ or handcut CZ? Otherwise a nice presentation. Thanks from Luxuria Diamonds.

CZ is just a no-go for most women when it comes to their wedding/engagement rings, but it sounds like the quality of the jewelry and the durability of the stone are the only real issues with the stone. When I go to a night out, jewelers aren't going to be examining my wife's jewelry with a loupe. So get a diamond for wedding/engagement rings and CZ for everything else. Just make sure the quality of the jewelry itself is high.

I can answer the scrtch question easily. You cannot scrach a diamond without another diamond, or very strong abrasive material like SiC etc. CZ on the other hand can be scrached by alumina powder/ sapphire, diamond and slightly lower hardness material, but not with sand/ sand paper/ concrete etc. Metal cannot scrach either of them

Diamonds would not be scratched by such things, so it would “prove a point” IE help educate people so they can make smart decisions concerning their finances, but it also wouldn’t harm the diamond, and he could also use a low quality cheap diamond to do a demonstration with.

Ever heard of 5 A, top quality Cubic Zirconia?. The cut, clarity and sparkle are as good as any high end diamond. Hardness is 8.5 in the Mohs scale, so it's harder than most environmental abrasives, it won't scratch easily!. And regarding refractive index and dispersion, the qualities that ultimately give diamonds and CZ's their fire and brilliance they are pretty close on both indexes. And last but not least, being a jeweller, obviously you're interested in selling diamonds for which you will profit abundantly, not a $40 CZ ring. Reality is diamonds are controlled and sold by one of the worst monopolies in the world: De Beers Corporation who controls 85 percent of the world's production, and locks up in their vaults most of every year production to keep the prices ridiculously high.

I have to say based on my experience over the years with all kind of Jewelry, the big difference is in the Eye of the Beholder when it comes to Diamonds vs Lab Created Stones! Yes I agree that for a Traditional Engagement Ring, I would agree that if you can afford it, go with the Original Diamond but if it is a ring for yourself or a friend as a gift, then in this day and age, there are many options to consider for Lab Created Stones. Yes, you can Purchase many Beautiful pieces of Jewelry that look just as good as the real thing and will give you a life time of pleasure, for a lot less Money and I have some Stones that I would say look like the real thing but are Lab Created, so for people like me who do not have thousands of dollars to spend on a Original, The Lab Created Jewelry is OK and always will be!

My personal opinion is that a CZ is better cause if you get robbed you just give it away and its not going to hurt you or lets say it does hurt but not that much because it isn’t a real dimond. Plus nobody should be a shame of using CZ because if we’re being honest they look good and yes it might not be real but who cares? At least it looks good. A dimond is beautiful and expensive and in my personal opinion is that if its a wedding ring 💍 yes but a real dimond because it has to be special and lasting! At the end if you can afford dimonds buy whatever your pleased with, if you cant afford dimonds then but CZ it doesn’t matter just buy what you can and what looks good unless if its for a wedding ring then yes buy dimond and work and grind for it because your girl deserves it. Otherwise just but what you can and be happy with it, you cant please everyone but yourself and you shouldn’t be ashamed of nothing! 😉

First of all I think it's very disrespectful to professional cutters to state that CZ are all poorly cut. If that was true, then also shame on you and every other jeweler for continuing to sell them and perpetuate the practice by maintaining demand. Second of all, it's untrue that cz stones last about as long as a piece of chewing gum . There is quite a lot of CZ pieces out there that are wearing just fine. And do I even need to mention that there is no such thing as a conflict CZ. Too bad the same can't be said of diamonds. Maybe it mattered more when jewelry was a way to store your wealth, but for most of us today it isn't. Your opening statement that diamonds beat CZ in nearly every category was not proven by your arguments and all I'm convinced of is that you have a clear bias towards diamonds and think that should be enough for the rest of us to do the same.

Anyone who buys real diamonds in hopes of any sort of value retention is being duped. Please do your research. Most consumer-level diamonds (4$K ish range) have virtually no re-sale value. Sometimes you'll get an 80% buy-back promise from the jewler you bought it from up to x-years. But that should tell you something about the intrinsic value of the stone. I made the mistake of buying a 1.5$k diamond ring to my ex-fiance (I was 24). We broke up a month later, and when I wanted to return it they more or less gave me the finger. Lesson learned! You'll get much more value for money with good gold jewlery + CZ.

I love both diamonds and cz and I own jewelry with both. I have started collecting high-quality classic cz ring styles with stones of different cuts and shapes so that I can see what settings and stones I like best for long term wear. In this way, when I have saved enough to get a ring with a bigger diamond, I will know for sure what cut, size and setting I want. Moreover, I love bigger stones, which I know I will never have a whole diamond collection of, so having the extensive cz collection allows me to have that "exuberance" for little money.

CZ are 8.5 mohs (hardness scale) which means it's virtually scratch proof against everything other than diamonds which are 10 mohs, so I would think they'd last a long time.
@YourAverageJeweler
@YourAverageJeweler 3 года назад
From a marketing standpoint you often see CZ listed as 8.5. The Mohs hardness scale does not specifically account for stones that fall between hardnesses. I speak to this a little bit when I talk about moissanite and how they often referred to it as 9.5, when it is more accurately closer to 9.25. Most stones that fall in between are given more of a range, and moissanite is more scientifically 8 to8.5. Right out of the gate anything in the corundum family like sapphires is definitively harder than cubic zirconia at a 9. It is also important to remember that the Mohs scale is not an equal distant scale. Meaning the scientific measurement of hardness is not the same from 6 to 7 as it is from 8 to 9. When you look at the scale in a more scientific fashion, it becomes very obvious how much harder diamond is than even something like moissanite, which is often touted as being The next hardest mineral. Lastly, hardness and toughness are not the same thing. Cubic zirconia it is a relatively hard and even tough gemstone, but when people wear it every day and occasionally severe conditions it does experience where that is much more noticeable to something like a diamond. Even diamonds can experience damage over time, but the degree of damage will be far less noticeable. Cubic zirconia is a very real alternative, but so many people misunderstand how much different from diamond it really is. Under some circumstances you may never notice the difference in durability, but people who wear it as an engagement ring almost inevitably will see damage over time. Those have been my observations and when you examine some of the more specifics behind the science It also supports that conclusion. Thank you for the comment! I hope these thoughts clarify some of the things I said in the video.

Few of us could afford a 4-carat diamond. I will say if paying so much less for a stone, most of us don't really care if we must replace it. That said, we wear pearls which are a 4 in hardness and if we take care of jewelry, it lasts a lifetime. Andrew, I realize your main focus is gem education, and yet I wonder if you might consider evaluating serveral companies like Italo to tell us if they sell what they say they do, real but lab created white sapphires and good craftmanship? Please cover the +s and -s of James Allen, Brilliant Earth, etc., but also toss in the less expensive retailers like Italo -- since if you can't afford James Allan diamonds, what's a good alternative to get your sparkle? Smells like Biased Propaganda here. Ever heard of Swarovski Zirconia? Also there are a lot of lies inbetween, zirconia is rated at level 8.5 while diamonds at 10 of hardness. So yeah, is a pretty hard stone and not that easy to make as you make it sound. Won't last? it will actually last as long as you do not loose it. As for "taking costs out of it" it will still be a great gemstone.
@shirleypena4133
@shirleypena4133 3 года назад
@Namol Baltoaca He is offering you wise advice, no "propaganda" at all. Unlike CZ, diamonds are RARE. There haven’t been any major finds for over 20 years, and there are no major mines on the horizon. Furthermore, the demand for high quality, genuine diamonds (particularly in China and India, where quality is more important than size) is growing rapidly, and in the very near future we will see demand outpace plateauing supply. That means that people who have purchased GENUINE, HIGH QUALITY diamonds have a product that not only represents important life moments, but which will be worth MORE in the future than it is today, and that product will always INCREASE in value. You WON'T have that if you purchase Swarovski Zirconia or ANY CZ, period.

Your argument on cut just doesn't make sense? If CZs have no inclusions and the material is cheap, it is very very cheap and cost efficient to get a perfect cut every time with little human interaction? These stones as you say are competing against diamond, as these are manufactured it would make sense to do this in a way that maximizes properties such as cut, at minimised cost (high volume with robotics / lazer etc)? It makes no sense you saying because the stone is different, there for you just cut it poorly? A brilliant cut is a brilliant cut???

I have 2 mens pendants with a tiny cubic zirconia gemstone in each one. Just looks spectacular and love how they reflect the light with different colours. EDIT: I agree with diamonds generally lasting longer (keeping their shine/clarity) and as a better investment of course. I also prefer the look of diamonds over cubic zirconia. But, my budget doesn’t stretch as far as actual diamonds so, cubic it is! 😀

Traditionally, the hardness of diamond makes it the choice for 'forever' jewelry, making it an auspicious choice for marriages. However, to get a good size, most diamonds will end up being yellowish with inclusions, which is not pretty at all. Cubic zirconia, on the other hand, is perfect for everyday work wear as earrings or pendants. No one will knock their ears or chest all the time so everyday knocks do not really apply. My cz earrings and pendants set in silver have lasted over 30 years now.

So, CZ is already superior for carat, color, and clarity (only professionals could see any difference)... and the only thing we need is to insist on better-quality cutting work from our gemcutters. Which is, in turn, driven entirely by prejudice... just like the "heirloom/heritage" and "what it represents" arguments. The only real concern--if it matters to you--is durability and brittleness (which is also a concern for diamonds, after all). Thanks for the info!

I did learn a lot from this video and will subscribe to you. I am not a jeweler, but I am a toolist, machinist, and mechanic... so I can work with some things. That said, sir, I do have a question: There are properties of the CZ you didn't mention here, where to my knowledge (and correct me by all means if I'm wrong) the CZ surpasses the diamond, for instance specific gravity and dispersion. Is this reliable though to a customer? I don't know. I'm not a jeweler. The hardness is up there, but not near the same... but... I feel there is one flaw in your video, and I'll mention that now. You mentioned that CZ is often set in cheaper settings. I feel that's unfair to mention because it has nothing to do with the crystal itself. That's because it's lower cost and you can buy them off the shelf at your local Walmart. Just toss the setting and cheap, flash-plated chain and use the crystal itself. That's what we're talking about here after all, is the crystal itself. That said, saying that you mentioned that, you failed to mention one huge negative side to the diamond. CZ is 100% more environmentally friendly. I know you know that. If you're going to mention the cheap settings they're in, you should have brought that up as a negative for diamonds. CZ does not fund bloodshed and worldwide illegal trade, where as we know, diamonds do. I'd love to hear some feedback from you on this comment, and I will sub to your channel because you're obviously more educated and skilled on this than I am, but those are my inquires. Thank you, sir -Darkdally
@Darkdally

I feel one other thing that was neglected to mention here is that natural "soul" that a diamond has. And this because of course colorless diamonds, to my knowledge are the rarest of all, whereas a CZ can be any color, and even multiple colors. That fire that hits the eye from a diamond, to my knowledge is because of the slight yellowish tint in the chemical makeup itself. I'm no chemist, but yeah, a CZ should be able to be any color and yes, you were 100% correct on how they wear, but they are easily perfectly clear, where that sprit that you see in a diamond is really just part of its innate chemical makeup and throws those colors. You know that CZ can be grown to produce any, and even every color at the same time. I guess I feel as though you were a bit biased, but then again; you're the jeweler and I'm not. Please correct me on anything. Thank you.

@@KsilvTV I bought my best girl a CZ necklace and reset it all myself. I do feel that far too few are informed on many things. Don't get me wrong, however; I'm not saying CZ is better, or that it's better because it's more affordable, no. They are both organically grown crystals - just under different circumstances. There are many who think, among us laymen, that CZ are just cheap, plastic knockoffs, but that is pure bull, of course. I do thank you for your reply, as well as your honesty, and let's face it - the reason that videos like this exist is because people have questions. I get it. And to be even more candid, when I say "bought", I meant stole. I could have as easily stolen diamonds. I can't afford either. I don't admire the politics behind diamonds, but that's me. I don’t think you made a very good case here, sir. So many marriages end in divorce that “sentimentality” isn’t worth the difference between a $100 CZ and a $10,000 diamond, both of which will get you a beautiful , high quality stone, respectively. Get the CZ in a high-quality setting. Replace the stone every 5-10 years. You can afford to do that many times over and still have saved thousands. What does it say about as as human beings that we are still equating the value of someone’s love for us with how much money they spend on a ring? If I fell in love with someone who could only afford a .25 diamond ring or asked me to choose a CZ ring in any cut, any size and the setting of my choice, I’m going with the ring that makes me feel best. Nobody has to know and you spend the money on a nice honeymoon or something that you BOTH benefit from. 😉

The point is that some CAN tell the difference, but more importantly, you don't need to be an expert to tell the difference after CZ has been worn for a time. Let’s just ignore the reality that CZ rates (8 - 8.5) equal or above the best emeralds (7.5 - 8) on the MOHS scale. Maybe a nice green moissanite at 9.25 MOHS and skip the diamonds and emeralds altogether. Sure it’s a little more expensive than a CZ but hardly something you’d need to sell a kidney to obtain.

Like many things, use case plays a large part in how well it lasts and looks. But there are not necessarily different grades of CZ as a mineral.

My mom mostly owns CZs, and they are good enough for accessory jewelry that gets worn every now and then. But, she has them in her current wedding ring as well. The ring is 8 years old, and the CZs are opaque and cloudy, more like quartz. Honestly, for cheaper stones, I would choose created sapphires over CZs. White sapphire doesn’t have fire. So, CZs look better than white sapphire. But, CZs just do not retain their beauty long enough. For a white stone with fire, quality moissanite is an option. If you get a cheap, plated metal that will look like garbage after heavy use, get a CZ. But, why not get a better stone for quality metal that will last? Putting a CZ in platinum or even solid 14k gold makes no sense.
