I just heard this song in a department store today. I don't think I've heard this song in at least 30 years! Why doesn't anyone ever play this? This song is a classic!❤
Man Herb Alpert is a man of the people for real. My man donated millions to help struggling artists be able to go to college at LACC. Love you Herb Alpert!
Another great song that you never hear on 80s formats or retro shows. It's as though the marketers of such formats want everyone, especially the new generation, to think that the 80s was all about Madonna, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson and Prince. All of those are great, don't get me wrong. But there was a ton of other stuff that gets ignored. BALLADS by Billy Ocean for one. And stuff like this by Herb Alpert for another. This song is just as catchy, if not moreso, as all the 80s stuff we get shoved at us everytime we turn on a playlist
Studies have shown that people who listen to oldies formats will change the station as soon as they hear a song they don't immediately recognize. That's how radio works.
@@scottlarson1548 thank you! I have never heard that before, that is interesting. Makes sense. They don't know me, though. I'm changing it because I DO recognize the songs. I adore Journey and I think they're a great group. But I can't even listen to them anymore because of the over- playing.
@@Farr50 Radio has become a passive experience to listeners now, just some music in the background that they ignore. I think that's because active listeners are using Spotify, Pandora, and others to find music these days. No one *really* expects to hear a song for the first time on the radio now.
I never knew that there was a video to this song. Dang, Jerome Benton was everywhere in the 1980s. I met him personally when I was in high school. Very nice guy.
Such a fun video, I remember it well, that little 'mini-Janet' rocked it, so cute! Jerome is great in this, and Jellybean Johnson also makes a cameo as the drummer of the band!
@@midohiobuckeyeaorwarrior9743 I honestly only remember the song and that there never was a video for it. I never saw it on video soul back in the day either, and I watched it almost everyday.
You tell me you love me You tell me you care But when I'm around you It's like I'm not there I need a reminder Something you can see Something on my finger Shining so brightly Don't you know Diamonds are a Girl's best friend When you go, they stay With me until the end Don't you know Diamonds are a girl's Best, best friend When you go, they stay With me until the end Don't want your money Don't want your key Diamonds Love don't come for free You sent me some roses But roses do die You gave me some candy It melted, nice try I'm not that demanding I have simple taste I just want a token That can't go to waste Diamonds Don't you know Diamonds are a Girl's best friend When you go, they stay With me until the end Don't you know Diamonds are a girl's Best, best friend When you go, they stay With me until the end
Ive always heard the song...but that intro...so 80s. Also...many don't know that Herb Albert is the A in A&M Records and not only is he an artist, Hes her boss.
Was her boss. Herb and his partner (Jerry Moss, who died about a month ago) sold the label around 1990. The last person they signed to a record deal was Sheryl Crow. I just saw Herb Saturday night and he was in great form at 88!

@@daradiant1 don't believe, I'm sure Herb would have rescheduled for her. If I had to speculate, he is the A of her record co, A&M. Perhaps he wanted to be back on top. He pushed is way into a pop song of hers so he could toot his horn in the background. She resented that so didn't want any part of the video. All speculation, but more believable then Herb refused to reschedule.
@@jobblyvids No, you're wrong (the guy is right). Janet's scheduled appearance took precedence at that time, and there were other reasons why the video shot couldn't be rescheduled, so that was what has been reported as to why Janet couldn't make the video shoot. Alpert, even being over A&M, respected Janet's decision, and it worked out well! The tease in the video created enough speculation/mystery that translated into the song being a huge hit!
My first inside visit a CVS in over a year. This plays over the speakers. I think, "I haven't heard this in so long," and start to dance and lip synch a bit as I look in the aisles. Then it hits me that today, this is the equivalent of elevator music 😲. How could anyone of any age not start wanting to dance to this sound?
@@imar3248 That's precisely the thing most people speculated about then...and for years that rumor was true...that Janet had a baby with El Debarge...or even worse...that she had a baby out of wedlock...remember there was no internet or cell phones...😂...so, these stupid rumors would go on for years...
I Swear to God at 2:57 Me and 2 Army Buddies we use to do Dance routine similar to this to get us hyped before we go to the clubs back in the 90s Rich ious Ray , Wicked Woody and ManyJ was our NickNames
Man…Summer of 87 this was everywhere, esp. on BET! I was a 13 year old with raging hormones who LOVED MTV, BET, and VH1. 36 years ago…haven’t seen this video since then. I miss those days

He's 88 now and still going strong!! He's 52 in this video and looks 32!!! WOW!! He still looks a lot younger than he is!!! He's extremely talented and also VERY generous, as well!!
10 years and only 159k views!? Well, at any rate, being an 80s baby this is a timeless classic beat and collaboration for the ages. Black, white, hispanic....Doesn't matter. Everybody was busting moves on the floor. Loving it. Him yelling "HERP ALPERT!" gets me every time.
Can we talk about the little girl tho? Performing on stage....in an adult dance club.......at 2:40AM ???!?! 😳😳😳 Ive seen this video TONS of times since childhood and NEVER noticed this until now. Memory lane sure is hittin different these days.
I’m probably the ONLY person who remembers this but there was a Dick Clark produced 80s show called Putting On The Kids (a spin-off from another show Puttin On The Hits with adults) where the kids lip-synced to their favorite songs. The little girl in the video was a winner (I think more than once) on the show performing Janet Jackson What Have You Done For Me Lately. You can find the show on RU-vid but not with the girl. I looked already lol
Janet Jackson on vocals . She signed for the record company herb alpert was a partner in A&M records (alpert and moss should you be curious !) Not normally into this kind of music but this song rocks !
I used to be so upset when I could never find this song on any of Janet Jackson’s albums. Now that I’m older I understand why 🤦🏼♀️. I still identify it as her song. 🤷🏼♀️
Love this song but it’s timing was bad. This was released after Let’s Wait Awhile and became a top 5 hit which delayed the release of Janet’s sixth single from Control, The Pleasure Principal. By the time it finally came out the album was over a year old and Pleasure Principal only got to #14 on the Hot 100. I believe it would have been Janet’s sixth top ten single from Control if it was released on the heels of Let’s Wait Awhile.
Ha ha, I love this video. Sooooo '80s in every way-- the sound, the style, the materialism of the lyrics. In 2020, these dancers look like complete clowns the way they're wardrobed-- but that was the look back then. I was in high school-- I remember it. Fun times.
80s materialism had NOTHING on the gross, gratuitous materialism of 2021! Are you kidding me??? Have you even watched a newer video, or listened to the morally corrupt lyrics of today's music? You have been conditioned to denigrate everything from the past. There is nothing at all wrong with the costuming in this video, for example. But you're "of the world" today, and today's world WANTS you to hate your past, and its culture, standards, and mores. They've got YOU exactly where they want you. Very Marxist.
@@Tre404 Why, you sound weird and unhinged. P.S. I am not "denigrating" the video-- I love it and everything about it. Seems you totally misunderstood. Oops!
I remember when Rosie O'Donnell played this video on VH-1, and she talked about the little girl that came out dancing at the end, and then she said how great she was and that she couldn't believe that little girl danced that well, because little girls don't dance that way and then she shwed how little girls dance and it was funny and then she said I still dance that way. It was hilarious 😅
I dunno, it may have been a blessing that she wasn’t. This song dropped right in the middle of when the singles from Janet were being released and her being in this video could’ve tipped her into being overexposed. I think it was smart to pull back and give us the audio but not the visual
