The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying. There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers. There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home. At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family. The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.

I’ll never forget hearing this for the first time. Diana Ankudinova at only 14 years old completely changed music for me with Rechenka. I’ve probably listened to it 50 times and still get chills. To me, this is musical perfection. Diana’s Rechenka has its own place in music history.

Очень хорошие комментарии. Моё внимание привлекли, в первую очередь, два эти определения:"интригующе" и "рискованно" ("risky"). Многие моменты вокальной партии в "Реченьке" в самом деле звучат рискованно; не думаю, что найдётся другой, даже очень опытный артист, способный продемонстрировать всё это в таком, уже привычном для нас виде. Этот номер на шоу "Ты супер" готовился долго, и хотя у меня нет никакой информации по этому поводу - всё-таки попробую поразмышлять, каким образом в итоге получилась та самая "Реченька", которой восхищаются во всём мире. Ни один музыкант не рискнул бы сделать аранжировку сразу с такой сложной вокальной партией; уверен, что эта партия выстраивалась в процессе репетиций, когда всем, кто работал над этим номером, открывались настоящие вокальные и артистические возможности этой 14-ти летней девочки. Я думаю, что кое-кому пришлось поудивляться; но если в вашем распоряжении оказался такой богатый, разносторонний талант, к тому же не боящийся рисковать - грех этим не воспользоваться. В итоге мы получили "Реченьку", которую вряд ли решились бы делать в таком виде с любым другим артистом. А что касается "интриги" - это ощущение всем нам хорошо знакомо, когда мы имеем дело с Дианой Анкудиновой. Возможность тайны, обещание тайны уже содержатся в самом её голосе, - как и в её внешности. Когда же она использует свой голос и свою внешность таким сложным образом, как в "Реченьке", как в "Wicked Game", как в "Вороне" - мы неизбежно начинаем ощущать привкус этой тайны. Во многих её лучших вещах нас ждёт что-то неожиданное и действительно интригующее; но и познакомившись с этим интригующим, даже привыкнув к нему - мы всё равно продолжаем чувствовать в нём привкус тайны, отзвуки чего-то не разгаданного до конца, чего-то такого, что нам не терпится услышать и в новых её песнях, - и снова, как и прежде, разгадывать, - никогда не надеясь разгадать до конца...

Haunting and riveting performance by Diana ! Her vocals are so unique and very grounded in Russian folklore ! She is able to convey her sorrows through her singing and movements ! Diana's timbre naturally is on the dark side and you are immediately drawn into her conflict ! Thank you Marisa as always for your wonderful commentary and your explanations were spot on ! Sadly we only get to see Diana on You Tube as she performs basically in Eastern Europe mainly Russia ! Hopefully she will garner a tour of North America where I'm sure she would fill the concert halls ! This artist is truly unique and her voice is so different to what we normally hear ! Diana often sings this song 'a cappella' at her concerts. The song is about a young girl who is about to be married (the guests are there, everything is going well, she is happy), but as an orphan she goes to the river to obtain a blessing from her deceased mother. The river is seen as the threshold between life and death. People ask how she managed to bring such emotion to the song when she was only 14. However, Diana was abused by her mother and ended up in an orphanage by the age of 3, with physical and emotional injuries, so traumatized she could not speak properly. The lady with glasses in the video is Irina, the woman who adopted her at age 5 and who encouraged her to sing to assist in her recovery.

This is a compilation of several folk songs. In the initial and final parts it is sung about the river. Here you can feel the smooth flow of the river and the echo spreading along the night forest shore. Rituals (and songs) of a Russian wedding are one of the important courses in Russian universities, where they teach history, historical ethnography, and so on. Therefore, I must correct you - all Russian wedding songs carry sadness, they express a very ancient attitude towards an important transition in a girl’s life (see the theory of transitions in ethnography), in particular her departure from her homeland to someone else’s family (clan, tribe). This has nothing to do with the theme of marrying someone you don’t love (although, of course, such meanings are added for specific cases - but as additional to the root meaning of wedding songs).

One of my favorites by her is from the "Show Mask Go On" entitled "Oh' It's Not Yet Evening" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cfTiQkJrLi0.html. It's an over 300 year old folk song about a Cossack warrior who dreams of his death in an imminent battle. On Diana's face you see sadness, anxiety and pain of the soul of the Cossack warrior. One would swear she borrowed that soul to perform the song.

I believe she was 15 here. I think she is now 19 so she has another 10 years or so before her voice is considered mature. As a true dramatic polyphonic contralto, I might have wished she had chosen to pursue a career in Opera, but she has said she has no desire to go in that direction. Enjoyed your comments on her....the background is as extraordinary as the performer. At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far northern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids, was the first to recognize something special in this little girl, and eventually adopted her. Diana was sent for singing lessons because it was thought that this might help her learn to speak without impediment. Only two years later she started singing in local theater, and in street plays and performances. And soon after was entered in a Russian TV music competition for disadvantaged children. By the age of 10 she was winning local competitions, singing on live TV shows, and her songs started showing up on RU-vid. Two months ago, at the age of 18, her first performance during a new Russian television competition with several other renowned performers, has gone viral and has garnered hundreds of RU-vid 'reaction' videos, and millions of viewers. Her first song at the competition, an entirely new take on Elvis Presley's 'Can't Help Falling in Love with You' has been called mesmerizing, transcendental and other-worldly...it highlights her uniquely deep voice, and effortless range from low to high, along with her trademark dramatic and passionate interpretation. Diana Ankudinova sings mostly in Russian, English and French. She has also sung in other languages including Spanish, German and Arabic. A viewer: 'At the age of 5 she couldn't speak her own language, and now she is this angelic singer that the world will soon discover! How can one watch her and still doubt past lives?'

Радость? Ну вряд ли. Скорее истерика. Девушку выдают замуж, не понятно за кого, да ещё и без родительского благословения - чему уж тут радоваться? Йодлинг, - скорее рыдание. Были в старину такие себе "плакальщицы", - приглашались на свадьбы, именно к невестам, когда ту наряжали под венец, и на похороны. Хотя я не эксперт. Номер шедеврален и, по моему мнению, лучший за весь проект "Ты супер!" Спасибо за реакцию! Всех с прошедшими праздниками - добра и здоровья!

" Профессиональные плакальщицы" на Русси, а позже и в /России, вы правы как правило посещали похороны, а на свадьбах невесту обычно обряжали причесывали и.т.д. ее лучшие подруги, вот они то и плакали как бы прощаясь сосвоей подружкой, а заодно и с детством, ведь это не секрет что в те времена за муж могли отдать девушку которая еще не давно играла в куклы и в основном не спрашивая ее мнение,предпочтение и желание, даже родная мать девушки не могла повлиять на судьбу дочери, все решал отец или брат если он был, а отца не было, был жесткий патриархат.Впрочем так было во многих странах, а в некоторых мусульманских так и до сих пор.

Excellent vocal analysis, I enjoyed your expert review of this truly gifted vocalist. I would love to recommend that you watch a few videos of the heavy metal band Queensryche. Specifically the song Take Hold of the Flame from Tokyo 1984. Also the song Silent Lucidity official music video 1991. The original lead vocalist Geoff Tate was one of the greatest male singers in rock/metal music. He is a natural baritone but has unbelievable tenor range. Please check it out.

An old Russian folk song telling the story of an orhan girl who goes to the river ( the boundary between the living and the dead ) to seek a blessing from her deceased Mother for marriage....this performance is especially poignant, as Diana was abandoned as a child and raised in a Russian orphanage.....Diana is a natural Contralto which, as you know, is the lowest female vocalist's register....this performance alone should make us all recognize and appreciate the talent of performers from the "world music" genre.....
