I was at this concert sitting in the third or fourth row. It was fantastic and at the end myself and some others went up on the stage surrounding her as she sang and danced. My God, what a night.

I always loved Diana's shows because they were such big productions.... waaaay before any other female was doing this. Not even Barbara Streisand (who refused to tour for years). Diana is the truest, most well-rounded diva of them all. Bravo!!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏

This is the first time I have seen Diana Ross in concert, and I must say she deserves her superstar status. She did not need dancers and props to make her show. She did it all on own, and I was blown away. Will such talent be locked in history when all the greats leave this earth?

Absolutely!!!!!! One Classy Broad all on her own!!!!! The classic DIVA of all time!!!!!!

The answer is YES! I have seen Diana Ross in concert THREE times and she has blown me away every time...especially when she performs in a venue that is "In-The-Round." She sings her way through her audience with so much grace and ease that they just melt when she is near. Much was made when she was with The Supremes that hers was not the voice that should have been the lead...but Berry Gordy knew what he had in Diana Ross and he made certain the world saw it all. That degree of talent is rare but back in the day, all a great vocalist ever needed was an orchestra (or a band) and a microphone. The "artists" of today haven't a clue how to mesmerize an audience of thousands with just their voices and stage presence. Every performance they give is like a circus act at the half-time show on Superbowl Sunday and it's not at all pleasurable. Rather, it's a circus act I can do without. So many today rely on visual and musical trickery to get their acts across. Without "Auto-Tune" most of them would never make it in concert.

I honestly can’t tell you I was there at this one as I think Diana Ross was at the Royal Albert Hall for several sell out concerts. I certainly attended one of them with my then girlfriend and a good mate. She’s been my favourite Motown star and thus by that connection alone, she must be my all time favourite. This concert was soooo good that , although having had the chance to see her again, i’ve turned down the chances. She’s playing in Cambridge (very close to home) in a few days time on her 2022 tour but nothing she could do today could possibly be better than her ‘73 performance so I don’t want to spoil it.

Barry Gordy's Motown Musical highlighted Diana's feelings, during this period, about the type of material she had to start her solo career with. Diana was concerned that songs with a waltz-like tempo (Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand, etc.) lacked the kind of contemporary, youthful fire her solo career needed for a successful launch. She made the best of what she had to work with for those first few years, but it's not surprising that she was eager to dip into danceable, rhythmic R&B and Disco genres with hits like "What You Gave Me," " Lovin, Livin and Givin," "Love Hangover', "One Love in My Lifetime," "The Boss', etc.
@jaylove9639
@jaylove9639 7 лет назад
Karim Bennett That part of the musical was false. Diana loved Reach Out and Touch, Berry hated it. Berry also didn't like Ain't Mountain High Enough. He thought the spoken passages should go at the end.

The Farewell Concert Jan 14th 1970 (myth has is that Mr Gordy had this recorded). Diana Ross at Albert Hall 1973. (COME ON BBC YOU MUST HAVE THIS.) - An Evening with Diana Ross from 1976 ( the full concert including The Point section and. not the TV Special or the badly Edited Japan Video from 1978 ). Too much to ask LOL!

This is beautiful. Thanks for posting this. Haven't seen this in quite some time. My favorite part is still at 1:14:50 when Ross brings Rhonda out on the stage. Rhonda's gotta be 2 years old here. My favorite song here is "I don't know how to love him" from Jesus Christ Superstar. I also liked 17:13 during Reach Out and Touch where she put a finger up at an overzealous fan, letting him know he better back down lol.

Thanks for posting this show. Diana's 1st solo shows in the UK. Fascinating to see a live concert from the earliest part of her solo career before so many of her biggest hits had been recorded. The reliance on Broadway show tunes to fill out the show and a brief medley of Supremes hits is an interesting format. The use of "Mountain" as the big finale has yet to develop. Was this ever broadcast on TV?

Moutton Noir , When she was with The Supremes they always sang a lot of Broadway tunes, so I'm not sure what the surprise is.

Of course Blog, your right- it was THE thing back in the day, tastes and attitudes changed around the mid 70s when it came to live shows by pop/rock acts- it was no longer cool to do these showtunes in concert as it became cheesy.

@nycp1969
@nycp1969 3 года назад
@@knockshinnoch1950Don't know about that. An Evening With, 1977--definitely mid 70s and arguably late 70s--was still using Lady is a Tramp and was incorporating two new musicals, The Wiz and A chorus Line, as major components of the show. Still later, her 1979 show has "I Wanna Be Bad," ostensibly a one off but still Broadway in sound, and the full use of "The Wiz." Central Park in 1983 had elements of "Dreamgirls." Think it's done there? Check out Oprah in 1999 when she skillfully sang "He Lives in You" from "The Lion King" and 2006 when she sang "What About Love" from "The Color Purple." Diana has never really abandoned stage music. She's part of the American stage tradition even though he has never starred in a Broadway musical. She has a Tony and she's broadly known for her live stage presence.
