"Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)" (often called simply "Lover Man") is a 1941 popular song written by Jimmy Davis, Roger ("Ram") Ramirez, and James Sherman. It is particularly associated with Billie Holiday, for whom it was written, and her version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1989. Charlie Parker did a rendition of "Lover Man", considered by many to be one of his most passionate recordings, during which he was horribly intoxicated. Parker himself considered it one of his most shameful moments.
Lady Sings the Blues is a 1972 American biographical drama film directed by Sidney J. Furie about jazz singer Billie Holiday loosely based on her 1956 autobiography which, in turn, took its title from one of Holiday's most popular songs. It was produced by Motown Productions for Paramount Pictures. Diana Ross portrayed Holiday, alongside a cast including Billy Dee Williams, Richard Pryor, James T. Callahan, and Scatman Crothers.
It was nominated for five Academy Awards. The nominations were for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Diana Ross), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Carl Anderson and Reg Allen), Best Costume Design, Best Music, Original Song Score and Adaptation (Gil Askey) and Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Factual Material or Material Not Previously Published or Produced] The film was also screened at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, but was not entered into the main competition. The film earned an estimated $9,050,000 in North American rentals in 1973.
Motown released a hugely successful soundtrack double-album of Ross' recordings of Billie Holiday songs from the film, also titled Lady Sings the Blues. The album went to number one on the Billboard Hot 200 Album Charts, for the week-ending dates of April 7 and 14, 1973.
I don't know why but I'm feeling so sad
I long to try something I've never had
Never had no kissin'
Oh, what I've been missin'
Lover man, oh, where can you be?
The night is cold and I'm so all alone
I'd give my soul just to call you my own
Got a moon above me
But no one to love me
Lover man, oh, where can you be?
I've heard it said
That the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
That you'll make love to me
Strange as it seems
Someday we'll meet
And you'll dry all my tears
Then whisper sweet
Little things in my ears
Hugging and a-kissing
Oh, what we've been missing
Lover man, oh, where can you be?
I've heard it said
That the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
That you'll make love to me
Strange as it seems
Someday we'll meet
And you'll dry all my tears
Then whisper sweet
Little things in my ears
Hugging and a-kissing
Oh, what we've been missing
Lover man
Where can you be?

Billy Dee was superb at showing his love, compassion and commitment to Bille Holliday. And Diana Ross was simply fabulous at portraying Billie. Clearly, the both deserved Oscars for their performances which shows the real challenges faced by artists.

This was absolutely the best acting job in a biopic pre Denz as Malcolm X & Foxx as Ray Charles.

I used to sing years ago this song was one of the songs I loved to sing and I used DianaRoss’s versions because range wise it was easier for me to be higher than as low as Billie gets. I had an amazing voice teacher. I loved doing exercises every day.

Introduced generation to genius Billie Holiday.Movie was great performance from Ms.Ross. Storyline was total fiction. Lois McKay character was physically abusive, but Lady Day latched onto that type. Liza Minnelli deserved award.
