She is simply mesmerizing...I can't take my eyes off her I wAs OBSESSED with her as a child (12y.o) w/this movie came out.....and ironically it introduced me to "jazz" at a very early age..so yes the power of art/cinema ...this is the quintessential Diana Ross, you real see and feel her star power , she reeks of charisma !!!!

I loved Diana as a child too. I first saw her as a 9 year old as she performed in Central Park in 1983. Through Diana's career I was also introduced to jazz music, both with this film and a 1993 jazz album she put out. I enjoyed Diana's contemporary music, her Supremes' music from the 1960s, and her show tunes and standards she has performed - A Chorus Line, Funny Girl, Modern Millie. When I hear the trashy music kids listen to these days I consider myself very lucky to have grown up with Diana playing in my ears.

Nah I believe Billie wouldn't have liked the movie because 90% of lady sings the blues was definitely false on almost everything. She would have loved Diana performance but she wouldn't have loved the movie. Now The United States vs Billie Holiday she would have loved more than lady sing the blues because she it actually tells what actually happened in her life.

Billy Eckstine, Ruth Gordon, Totie Fields and Diana Ross. Now THAT's an afternoon of great people. Show's how young Ms Ross was here if she didn't realize that Mr. B had worked with Billie Holiday. Although, he mostly worked with her rival and his protege, Sarah Vaughan. More importantly, how much at that time recent African American history was suppressed and left out of the conversation. Also shows that the last two decades of focusing on that history and bringing it out has been an extraordinarily positive thing for everybody.

wow. I love the video but the tape imprint is so distracting. I know unfortunately those daily shows back then did not preserve a lot of tape. Years ago I started to collect a significant number of Ross's taped interviews and performances throughout her entire career. I'll have to go through my catalog and see if I have this. Without the imprint this tape would be quite wonderful for Ross fans and Mike Douglas fans. I'm happy to see this just the same though.

I was obsessed with LADY SINGS THE BLUES when the movie came out. I do remember this very Mike Douglas afternoon interview, and when I saw Diana here, I was over the moon. As many are stating this talk is the very best of Diana Ross. Her sincerity on her press tours for LSTB is something I have always remembered. Diana wanted to inspire people, speaking with ellegance and purpose. A cut above. Indeed, Mike Douglas seems beguiled... Again, this is the Diana Ross I most remember over the "I'm Coming Out" disco queen of later years... And yes, she does seem incredibly nice and accommodating in this vulnerable interview, despite a different kind of reputation that would later follow her...

You probably love the mellow sound of Diana's voice as apposed to Billie's style of singing. There are others who favor other Artists' version of her songs as well. I love Bille's style of singing because it doesn't depress you. Many Artists don't know how to deliver the songs like that, so you get the true sadness of some of Billie's Songs when they sing them.

A couple of things are interesting about her. You can tell the famous Motown “charm school”(artist and development) she took probably more seriously than any other person at the Motown. Second I saw when I was teenager in NYC in a restaurant and interestingly although people recognized her they weren’t going crazy for autographs. But what I remember most was how much she seemed to watch people around her. I thought that was very different from many stars who seem to ignore what’s happening around them. I thought that said a lot about her awareness not just in music but in life as well…

It was a real shame that she didn’t get the Oscar for Lady Sings The Blues.. I believe it said in one of the books about her life that Hollywood didn’t like Berry Gordy’s behavior at the time. He acted like it was a sure thing that she would win and it cost her to lose to Liza Minnelli. Who knows if it’s true.
@carmenfender4793
@carmenfender4793 3 года назад
Just saying...Caberet was a horrible movie and Liza's performance was amateurish and kind of "campy" at best. Liza's daddy, Vincent Minelli, still had a lot of influence in Hollywood and I think that's why Liza got the Oscar. Diana's performance was superb, impeccable and she should have won. Like so many others through the years, she was robbed. That's Hollywood for you.

Sweets Sweeter The classy thing to do, however, the Lady was not even looking at Diana. She was looking at the man as if it were the man's performance in the film she were complementing. Not Diana. She not only interrupted, but was referring to Diana and did not even have the decency to look at her. The classy thing to do here was just what she did. Since she was not being spoken to, she turned her head.

Sweets Sweeter First of all, she was not complimenting her. She was paying her a compliment THIRD PARTY. She said, "MY DAUGHTER SAID THAT IT WAS THE BEST FILM SHE'S EVER SEEN." Diana Ross was "robbed" her Oscar Nominated Performance! There have been plenty of "First Acting Role" "Oscar Winning recipients" on their first motion picture. But, you can't compare Diana to Halle Berry. When Halle Berry won. In her "Best Actress Category" Halle Berry was the only Actress that year in that category. The everyone else had won an Oscar already! And in the 1970s there were fewer roles for African-Americans. Still today 50years later their still is! Halley won it 50years later! And no other Female African-American has won ever since! I think Halley Berry won it in 2003! Although Diana Ross won they say the second best to an "Oscar": Diana Ross won a "Golden Globe" for her first movie "Lady Sings The Blues". I love the movie & have the DVD. And watch it numerous X times!❤

when I did my jazzladdee character on the LifeWorks video collection I had a some strange existence that I'm in between billie and Diane in one whole genre and im still labeling a somewhat rock- fused jazz musician like Hendrix and Janis all in one where center. if you look through the inner sanctum of her pain within a song teal meant the whole surface well, like billie's nightmare allied strange fruit. I played over and over and see how fthy the world is by witch hunting beyond through racism and over sizing the hypocrisy of electing the wrong demons after while. billie's life is more than a book drawn an imperfect life between prositution and drugs. her life is similar to mine I was breaking the stereotype of sexual abuse and silencing the real truth. so thank Mrs billie for showing my heart to open to the world,people really love to see Mrs holiday and jazzladdee in one force of song. it's realism on a canvas as you really want to feel the filthy perverse and gnaw as you true want to make it show and do it. so, I kinda believe in what Mrs holiday had been through hell enough, but jazzy had to put real life aggravation through mathematics and science with realistic with using street knowledge. hatred can be a hard act to show in cinematography, but we had to ad true to the film as like rock and roll and hip hop did.

She earned it and didn't show it during Interviews in the 70's, but from 80's & Beyond there was No hiding it.

Diana Ross looked nothing like Billie Holiday but did a great job portraying her. Who will play Diana in her biography and will the truth be told? It's too bad the video is obstructed.
