Ahhh, this song, this song was one of the songs I fell in love with when I bought this album in 1970. Diana never sounded so soulful thanks to Ashford and Simpson. I have to say that A&S were magic to Diana just like HDH was to the Supremes. They should've worked together a lot more and hits would've been coming over and over again. They brought the best out of Diana and made her really SING.
At least she is still doing what she enjoys doing. I saw her at the Nokia last year, and she slammed. Yes, I was surprised at how much she slammed, but she did. She came back for encore, after encore, after encore, always wearing a different gown. SHE LOVES DOING THIS. You could not drag her off of a stage. Fantastic that someone keeps doing what they have done for so long and still loves it!!
Andrew Davis, you are right about her Beauty! However, she's not just beautiful physically but she is also beautiful spiritually. This is why her career has had the longetivity it has had and why she is seen as a Global Iconic Figure.
Diana Ross is considered the most successful female artist when you include ALL of her Number One records with The Supremes, as well as her solo and duet output...Many of the pre RIAA certification product was not substantiated, but when you consider that the Supremes were a phenomenon of the 1960's...on par with Whitney Houston in the 90's, the Jackson 5 in the 70's, etc...they were unstoppable...There is no GREATEST to me; I just love me some good, good, wonderful music by THEM ALL!!
soooo damn right lol-beauty class-voice like no other....yes, and even more...she made me believe being gay was something to be proud of...because Diana Ross said, she loved her gay fans....
One thing to consider those of you that are detractors: We all get colds, or days when we simply get tired from the day...and a portion of the "magic" might not be there for the evening, or for certain notes, it's all relative. As a professional, you go on and realize that you still have a show to do, and simply have to say "Oh Well..." . No one is perfect ALL THE TIME, but that does not mean that one has "LOST IT!" Jeez, get over yourselves with the constant criticism.
I too love the Bones Howe tracks, but you where they fit perfectly? On "Everything Is Everything"! Try mixing those songs in w/EIE in a playlist and I swear the Bones Howe sound fit right in with Deke Richards and Hal Davis' pop sounding productions. "Stoney End" - Motown shoulda rush released it to swamp Streisand's single, which started climbing the charts right as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" fell from #1. Coulda been at least a Top 20/Top 10 hit for our girl!
@MrMiketsmith Not tru MrMike..Motown just rode the wave of Supremes popularity and then it went into capitalizing on Ross's star power from being in that iconic group. When the Jacksons came, They got ALL of motwons promotions I do agree with you about Syreeta Wright. So under rated as an artist. But during those days, it wasn't just a great voice that could sell records, you had to be able to have presence and be a performer. Not saying Syreeta wasn't. But Diana was one of the best entertainers
I admire the work done by Ms. Wright. But, the old 'Motown only promoted DIana Ross" story is both untrue and unfair. I grew up in the era and kept the closest watch on the company. They made Mary Wells a star before the Supremes had a hit record. While the Supremes were churning out hits, so were the Vandellas -- and they were all on the same TV shows and concert venues.. If Mary Wells had not believed that the label was not prestigious enough, she could have stayed and been even bigger.
Kenneth Hamlett First off, I am a DR fan, but there was favoritism toward her specifically and The Supremes while she was wiyh them. It has been documented in Gladys Knight's book, Martha Reeves' book, Katherine Anderson Schaffner's book, not just Ms. Wilson's. They were all young and competitive and Berry was very driven. Notice how the company went downhill once he started following hid obsession with DR. He even mentions that obsession in his own book. Yes, he still promoted the others but not to the same level as the Supremes. They were a "draw" for the world to see Motown, eventually attracting Sammy Davis, Diahann Carroll, Bobby Darin, The Four Seasons, and Barbara McNair to the label. His philosophy was "If the girls were successful the other groups and artists could be pulled along in their wake." It worked! Many people that weren't even around during that time now think all 60s R&B as Motown music although there were tons of other successful companies.
syreeta wright was a brilliant vocalist who started at motown as a secretary. if you listen to some of stevie wonder's earlier works, you'll not only hear her doing background vocals, but find out that she co-wrote a lot of his music . check out her "one to one" album. fabulous. unfortunately , she died a few years ago of cancer (i believe). I don't like comparing artist to each other, but you know how motown was when it came to promoting female artist-diana ross was the only one!
Oh my God, I didnt know this!! She had her vocal cords operated on??? I would have lit a candle a day in church for her. I am glad she is ok and her voice is fine.
Some joker wrote "I must say Syreeta Wright's ...version is better". Well, if you feel you "must" say it, then I guess you must. But I'm certain you would not have a consensus! Secondly, who in hell is Syreeta Wright ? Rediculous.
crut5 Diana and Syretta had very similar sounds, so much so that Syretta used to do the demos for Diana during The Supremes years and Berry wanted Syretta replace Diana in The Supremes. I think that both Syretta and Diana bit h bring there own unique interpretation to a lot of the same songs they recorded.
@BlogShag stop pretending... you probably have all beyonce's cd and none of diana's. There is a reason why beyonce is the most successful female musician ever
