@@ernestchacon4928 I’ve never heard someone call one of her male contemporaries “too bossy.” Ambitious is more like it. And this is coming from a Florence Ballard fan.
The intro does. I still remember when i was a kid, it started playing on my radio while i'm sleeping, then i cover my ears from the intro & it give me chills big time 🥶
Just confirms that Diana Ross is one of the greatest vocalists of all time - not just the 60s! Great to see the three of them appearing as individuals - they seem much happier as a result.
"Reflections" is possibly one of their strongest songs. As a kid, the hits from the group just came wizzing by, then this-a serious dramatic big song. Just the tempo changes, the severity of the orchestration. All the while the ringing Motown rhythm, but the writing and melody is something else. Others have attempted to cover the song with mixed results. Nobody has come close to this original recording.
Classic Motown...tight, elegant background vocals and of course the signature tambourines against the back-beat. Most have their favorite Supreme track but it's interesting that this one, at fate's hand, is called 'Reflections'. A movement, spirit and style with remarkable good taste; reflects a long gone supreme musical era.
I love Diana Ross and the Supremes! Big ups to my favorite Bass Player of all time Mr. James Jamerson on that Fender Bass guitar... What a timeless approach the way he executed music with that instrument to accompany the singers. Big ups to all musicians, engineers and singers of Motown.
She's no imposter, she's Cindy Birdsong, and with great bravery she stepped into very-difficult-to-fill shoes. And this fan too resented her at first because we Knew Motown was lying to us about the real reasons to Ballard's departure. And Cindy got even less than the degree of exposure Ballard knew, as HDH left, Ross recorded with the Andantes, and on Gordy's orders, Mary and Cindy were pushed back further from the cameras to highlight you-know-who all the more. Supremes fans cringed.
@@moonraker30 I saw her on a christian show where she said she was excited to join the group. It was years later after she was no longer with them, I think. I'm surprised to hear that she really didn't enjoy it.
What amazing and talented Women. Diana just had the "IT" Factors. She was unique and different for the time and commanded any stage/performances they had.
Many have criticized Ross' voice and believe that the leads should've gone to Ballard. I think Gordy was smart to put Ross as lead because of her vocal uniqueness and star quality. With Ballard as lead, The Supremes would've sounded like Martha Reeves and the Vandella's and Marvelettes. They wouldn't have been special.
Agreed. Like the Old Hollywood Studio System, Motown found a formula that worked and stuck with it. I think about how the members of KISS each did solo albums that were released on the same day while they were still very much a group. Same album cover art of tight headshots. But an opportunity for fans to experience the different musical nuances among band members. That could’ve been good for the Supremes artistically and in keeping peace among them. But Florence was the original lead singer of the group. Although she was a gifted singer, Berry recognized Diana’s marketable quirky appeal. He made the right decision. She is electric, odd - and most importantly MEMORABLE. It’s what makes superstars.
Dude everyone knows it's cause her voice was more appealing to white audiences. It wasn't her uniqueness - it was the fact she didn't have a strong or powerful voice that so many black singers had.
Dude; you ain't never lied. Diana Ross was a bewitching fantasy figure. And that's what the "Diana Ross can't sing as good as Flo" crowd will NEVER "get". Ross was the perfect goddess / figurehead of the groundbreaking, newly emerged Motown Records. THAT'S what BG WANTED. NOT the gospel / blues yodeler. He wanted the Motown hood ornament / world ambassador. He rolled the dice with Diana Ross, and it WORKED; like no music label before or since. We LOVE Flo, but Diana was better suited.
NYC Songman you ain't kidding. These girls are all talented but Diana had "it" by the truckload. The way she worked you with those eyes was spellbinding. She was sexy AF. I love all Motown stuff, but the Supremes were the cream of the crop. Without these girls there is no soundtrack of the 60's.
I agree with you NYC Songman all the way she was the best ! We love all The Supremes but she was and is supreme the was many articles written about her back in the day when they called her the supreme Supreme and that certainly was love her everything about her
Diana, is the BOSS... & I've been watching some interview clips of her (Barbara Walters & Oprah) ... she is the true & first Diva. I think the sweetest & most professional thing was when she "owned" being considered a Diva & also acknowledged her human frailties... she said she is never intentionally rude to staff or anyone... but admits she has moods just like everyone else. If you really want to get a sense of who she is...review some of those clips.
I've been watching so many of her interviews. You are right. She admitted to her faults. I give her nothing but respect for that. But let's be honest, she is THE BOSS! God rest her soul, Mary even said that Diana had guts and tenacity and never took that away from her. Much love to the Supremes!
Listen to that slammin' bass line, the work of the great James Jamerson who recorded most of the Motown hits but was never properly credited. There are some good clips about him on You Tube. Please check them out.
This song has never stopped being cutting edge, and whenever I hear it I marvel at the spacey, mind altering beginning, knowing that what follows is pure class. An overpowering reminder that this era was close to peaking before the slide began in the 70's. Priceless 60's video.
One of the enduring memories I have of the time when I was five years old was hearing this song quite a lot on CKLW 800AM, a radio station that was located in Windsor, Ontario and was noted for being one of the stations that helped put Motown music on the map, so to speak, and was probably also the most popular radio station in North America from the mid-1960s until sometime in the early 70s when Motown's star started fading. 'Reflections' is a great song, and even if its meaning was lost on me at that early age, the emotion it contained was not.
Everything about this performance is so uncharacteristically casual. It looks like they went straight from their cars into the studio and started lip-synching. I love it.
Classy, beautiful, talented, gifted ladies, every girl wanted to sing/be a supreme. These ladies exemplified grace, poise, they presented the essence of what it was to be a lady/ woman. I miss this 🎶, we enjoyed, sing the lyrics, stayed slim from living on the dance floor day/night!!!!!!!!
Diana Ross has a beautiful voice, it's her signature, nobody has the same voice, and how beautiful they all dressed, that's how it should be when you perform!
Man that song always tugs at my soul and causes me to remember the true loves of my youth. That's why they called it Soul Music. And the Supremes were the Queens of soul , and always will be.
Either I've watched too many Supremes clips in my short life or this funk REALLY never goes out of style! The music channels so many memories yet the style echoes TODAY's trends!
ohno But who said anything was wrong with the way Velma dresses? I simply stated that the outfit Mary was wearing is reminiscent of the one Velma wears in Scooby Doo. Not sure how the way Mary looks is relevant. Stop creating problems in places they shouldn't be, *"zoinks!"*
I think Diana has the best outfit on. Can you imagine what went on behind the scenes. Total drama with Diana letting the other girls what the deal was. Of course, that’s just me speculating. We’ll never know the truth. That said, this a great song & I only really knew of it because of China Beach.
IMO: *The best Supremes single* (yes, I'm aware of "You Keep Me Hanging On" [#2] - crazy soulful, "Stop..." [#3] - also very stately , and "Love Child" [#4] - their biggest). Something about those mournful cellos/ piccolo- and bluesy bass/ tambourine combos here, though.
This song brings back memories of the escalation of the Vietnam War. I was only 12 years old and my parents drove us often to Huntington Beach, during that Summer of 67, to cool off. I remember helicopters often flying overhead doing training from the airbase at Los Alamitos. This song was played often on all those transistor radios on the sand. Good times and also scary times.
+Serenityy S Motown also had a secret weapon named Maxine Powell, an icon who taught the artists about fashion sense, manners, elocution and deportment.
Diana Ross is the Most Beautiful woman ever ! Just look at her Eyes and you fall in Love with her ! Enough said . She also has the most beautiful voice ever !
Lets not over do it. you mean her bug eyes. But you have to admit she had a presence, not a great voice but, it was perfect for the songs given to her.
@@chrisbonilla9950 this was the last song she sang on. She never did any shows singing it. She was fired after this song. It’s talked about on one of the videos on here.
Flo had just been removed from the group and if you really look at Diana, she looks sad, Birdsong looks like she has been placed in at the last minute and only Diana and Mary have uniformity in their moves and clothing.
I like this song. It has a catchy melody and thoughtful lyrics that look back to the past. 'The way life used to be'. She lost love but life goes on. The word 'reflections' makes it philosophical in a way. M. Walker.
Honestly I have been listening to Diana Ross since I was a small child and I was born in '94 so it was not long ago for some people but honestly I love how my grandmother made me listen to Diana and all the other artists from the 60's and 50's my music taste is positively classic and lovely. :)
Its now friday and ive been looking at the surpremes since monday. Now I can really see why they couldnt be touched. The music the image the voices.NOT just diana but the VOICES.The group needed someone like diana who is very playful and flirtatious with the audience and camera.Mary was beautiful but she wasnt outgoing like diana, and flo shouldve been a solo SOUL artists on motown and diana couldve still had her career.Cindy was sexy but boring.Once flo left diana POPPED out even more.
You can tell they are sort of uneasy with the lip syncing. It's actually at a time when producers realized the lip syncing really works!! A very early example of it.
