The most successful American performers of the 1960s, the Supremes for a time rivaled even the Beatles in terms of red-hot commercial appeal, reeling off five number one singles in a row at one point. Critical revisionism has tended to undervalue the Supremes' accomplishments, categorizing their work as more lightweight than the best soul stars (or even the best Motown stars), and viewing them as a tool for Berry Gordy's crossover aspirations. There's no question that there was about as much pop as soul in the Supremes' hits, that even some of their biggest hits could sound formulaic, and that they were probably the black performers who were most successful at infiltrating the tastes and televisions of middle America. This shouldn't diminish either their extraordinary achievements or their fine music, the best of which renders the pop vs. soul question moot with its excellence.
The Supremes were not an overnight success story, although it might have seemed that way when they began topping the charts with sure-fire regularity. The trio that would become famous as the Supremes -- Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard -- met in the late '50s in Detroit's Brewster housing project. Originally known as the Primettes, they were a quartet (Barbara Martin was the fourth member) when they made their first single for the Lupine label in 1960. By the time they debuted for Motown in 1961, they had been renamed the Supremes; Barbara Martin reduced them to a trio when she left after their first single.
The Supremes' first Motown recordings were much more girl group-oriented than their later hits. Additionally, not all of them featured Diana Ross on lead vocals; Flo Ballard, considered to have as good or better a voice, also sang lead. Through a lengthy series of flops, Berry Gordy remained confident that the group would eventually prove to be one of Motown's biggest. By the time they finally did get their first Top 40 hit, "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes," in late 1963, Ross had taken over the lead singing for good.
Ross was not the most talented female singer at Motown; Martha Reeves and Gladys Knight in particular had superior talents. What she did have, however, was the most purely pop appeal. Gordy's patience and attention paid off in mid-1964, when "Where Did Our Love Go" went to number one. Written by Holland-Dozier-Holland, it established the prototype for their run of five consecutive number-one hits in 1964-1965 (also including "Baby Love," "Stop! In the Name of Love," "Come See About Me," and "Back in My Arms Again"). Ross' cooing vocals would front the Supremes' decorative backup vocals, put over on television and live performance with highly stylized choreography and visual style. Holland-Dozier-Holland would write and produce all of the Supremes' hits through the end of 1967.
Not all of the Supremes' singles went to number one after 1965, but they usually did awfully well, and were written and produced with enough variety (but enough of a characteristic sound) to ensure continual interest. The chart-topping (and uncharacteristically tough) "You Keep Me Hangin' On" was the best of their mid-period hits. Behind the scenes, there were some problems brewing, although these only came to light long after the event. Other Motown stars (most notably Martha Reeves) resented what they perceived as the inordinate attention lavished upon Ross by Gordy, at the expense of other artists on the label. The other Supremes themselves felt increasingly pushed to the background. In mid-1967, as a result of what was deemed increasingly unprofessional behavior, Ballard was replaced by Cindy Birdsong (from Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles). Ballard become one of rock's greatest tragedies, eventually ending up on welfare, and dying in 1976.
After Ballard's exit, the group would be billed as Diana Ross & the Supremes, fueling speculation that Ross was being groomed for a solo career. The Supremes had a big year in 1967, even incorporating some mild psychedelic influences into "Reflections." Holland-Dozier-Holland, however, left Motown around this time, and the quality of the Supremes' records suffered accordingly (as did the Motown organization as a whole). The Supremes were still superstars, but as a unit, they were disintegrating; it's been reported that Wilson and Birdsong didn't even sing on their final hits, a couple of which ("Love Child" and "Someday We'll Be Together") were among their best. In January 1970. Jean Terrell replaced Ross, and the group continued through 1977.

The Motown Sound had the complete package, great singers, musicians and songwriters. This music has staying power. I can listen to this music over and over. The Supreme's were absolutely amazing but the songwriting of Holland Dozier and Holland really made them what they were. They wrote 10 of their 12 number one's !

@jobucats2166
@jobucats2166 6 лет назад
You mean, tell that to the Ross haters who keep believing it was Florence, an excellent and beautiful background singer, deserved to be the lead singer since it was she who put the group together. The Ross fans just know that Supremes were able to attain success in more than just pop music due to Diana Ross and her voice, drive, and charisma. As a group limited to the just the typical r&b girl group sound of the time, Florence and the Supremes may have had some success. Diana took that shit and made a pretty impressive career with it, I would say. Ok...waiting...waiting for it....."her success and longevity is due to sleeping with the boss."

This was written by the Motown songwriting team Holland/Dozier/Holland. Lamont Dozier got the idea for the title after an argument with his girlfriend. In the heat of battle, he yelled, "Stop in the name of love." They both started laughing and Dozier knew a line that corny had to be a song title. Great Supremes song! Thanks for posting. Holland Dozier and Holland songwriters extraordinaire. The Supremes three beautiful women singing beautiful harmonies and Diana Ross oh what a lovely lead voice! I love all good music, but give credit where its due. I may be white, but the African American music traditions in this country are the foundations for our greatness musically. I just wish rap and this stuff never had happened or had happened without all the negative lyrics. Today I still love what they call R&B and quite frankly a few years down the road there may be a huge melting pot musical revelation. I love this song. Classic and classy.

I am so glad that people are starting to appreciate all of the Supremes. I am so grateful that this video exists, it showcases all of them. Florence is so charismatic she almosts steals the moment from Diana...and was singing background. I'm also ecstatic that so many people see and recognize the aura and contribution that FLORENCE BALLARD made to the group. Not long after this record was released Berry Gordy and the hierarchy at Motown began to systematically start to emphasize and push Diana Ross out into the forefront. They also began to play one against the other so that they would not entertain the idea of signing with another label. If Florence had only had the tenacity to wait until Diana left to begin to her solo career she would have been one of the biggest stars in the industry. There was enough success for both of them to have had enormous careers. An interesting fact about the group...upon seeing the Supremes perform their act at the Copa, producers were trying to persuade Gordy to allow either a Broadway show or movie showcasing Florence's charisma. Berry not only did not allow it, he never even discussed the possibility to Florence and didn't mention it to either Mary or even Diana concerning their interest in Florence. Sammy Davis was crazy about Florence He just loved the personality of her when it came to the patter of remarks she made between songs when the played the Copa. By the time they had engagements in Vegas, Motown had most definitely decided to replace Florence. At the first attempt, management gave B Gordy the ultimatum if there was no Florence in the act...then there was no Supremes performance at all. Not telling any of the girls about this...Berry brought Florence back pretending to give Florence "a second chance". Just imagine how soaring her career could have been!!

I am sorry for the Florence fans who are Diana-haters that Florence was not made to be the lead singer. If Diana had only left the Supremes earlier, maybe Florence could have stepped in as the lead singer and taken them to even greater heights of success than they had with Diana. My opinion is "NO," however maybe so. I am sure Diana, while maybe not as rapidly, would have eventually reached the levels of longevity and success that she has had.

We attended Catholic school and though there were almost no black kids in my school from grades 1 to 12, I did play accordion with two black girls at age 10. There 6"5 father was like an uncle to me. My father and he worked in the mill yard together for over 35 years. I cannot stand racist whites and call them out on it if I see it. I beat up a white boy when I was 12 because he called my accordion playmates some horrible names and here we are, all attending Catholic school. WE ARE ALL GOD'S CHILDREN.

John1948TwelveB - I agree with every word in your notes that accompany your uploading. Thank you so very, very much. I was a teenager then and appreciated every single one of their hits, and bought them on those 'old' '45s. They were best when they performed as a team.

I Think Florence Ballard was the Best out of all of them. It is so sad how she Died. Even When Florence passed she never Got the Respect or Recognition She deserve as a Supreme.

Sad indeed about her passing,however, it is good for her fans that Florence recorded an album so they can remember her voice.

Those of us males that grew up in the late sixties have these songs ingrained in our minds. We'll never forget the Motown girls.

We did this routine and "Where did our love go" once for a Valentine's dinner in the UAE, in the early 90's, way before RU-vid. We had cassettes that we listened to, over and over. We practised our own moves in front of a mirror (nothing like the original, we had no video). I was one of the backup singers and I don't remember a thing after the lights came on. We apparently did a great job though :) I'm just happy that I didn't pass out because of stage fright. GREAT music.
