Dianne Lake, a former member of the Manson Family and Deborah Herman, attorney, journalist and cult expert who coauthored her book "Member of the Family: My Life with Charles mansion, Life Inside His Cult and the Darkness That Ended the Sixties," discuss the Manson documentary "Helter Skelter: An American Myth."
In this second video, Dianne Lake and Deborah Herman discuss her life before meeting Charles Manson and how a person can become a cult member without realizing they are being indoctrinated.
Dianne Lake was the youngest member of the Manson Family cult, did not participate in the crimes, but was a key witness against them.

Love Dianne Lake. Of all the people in the family I feel for her the most. She was just a 14 year old little kid trying to make her way through life with her only guidance from a 33 ex-con, conman. It’s great to see what she’s made of her life after having such a messed up childhood. Bravo Dianne.

She's done well. It says something about what we are made of verses what is put on us.

What's your take on the Manson girls being paroled?

True but if she stopped payment for interviews she wouldn’t do them, she admits herself she has a good life and poverty is a stranger. Maybe if she gave Manson interview’money to Charity it would be good for her soul.

it seems disturbing that young women like her could be turn to murderers..

Some people felt I interrupted Dianne too much. While I wrote the book with her I am not a professional interviewer. We became friends through our collaboration. I am happy to do another interview where Dianne can answer questions for you. Please comment with questions and we will choose some to address. And be respectful to me. I worked hard on the book and we were a team. While I can take constructive criticism insults will be removed.

Good interview. I loved this book and reviewed it on GoodReads recently. is there anyway I'd be able to interview her (or the both of you) for my new podcast?

When you have an opportunity, can you ask Dianne if she has any memory of the family having copies and/or listening to any of the recording sessions she mentions?

Just finished her book- strongly recommend for a plain spoken journey of a fellow Traveler. As a Veteran with PTSD, the way she describes her father and the odd things he did I can very easily relate to- but the difference is I get help for dealing with mine- her dad's generation didn't have the same medical help that we have available to us now.

Wow. I've always been impressed by how intelligent & articulate Diane Lake seems to be. She really seems like a quality person and I perceive her to be a reliable and accurate source on most things manson. This interview makes me want to read her book.

I see an audio tape of Dianne from 1969 (Audio Archives) but it is almost impossible to hear. Anyone know if there is a transcript? It would be interesting.

Many of us who survived the 60's were like broken, damaged & dented cans of food who rolled into one another and dealt with whatever happened next. We lived in the moment and were so disconnected from "polite society", that, it enabled us to survive all of the so-called "horrible" things that were done to us. We just didn't register the horror as anything negative. It just was a part of our daily lives. Many of us died early deaths from self abuse.

I love listening to Dianne speak about her past experiences and see how far she's come. Buy I have to say, I wish Deborah would let her speak and not interrupt or talk over her so often. It was a bit hard to listen to at times.

What happened to you could have happened to anyone at that point in time I just feel for you that you where victimized by such a person He was even more evil than we think to manipulate and victimize disenfranchised young people looking for love and acceptance

I dropped a lot of acid from 81-82, at the age of 19. Had I got involved with some commune with a guru, no doubt that I would have bought it! By the time I quit using, I had all but lost touch with reality, so much so that I was offered a medical discharge from the Marines, but I stuck it out.

in the late 1960s it wasnt just the manson family who believed the end was coming...I was a child in church and the constant tone and topic of their message was the end of the world is coming soon. Actually, it got so extreme I had to turn away from it. The rioting the unrest of the cities. Manson just had a supposed twist on the narrative that it was helter skelter. It got too dark for me. There were ministers that would teach that there were young ones in the audience that would not see adult hood. To a child that could be extremely frightening. I told myself after living through that I would never listen to doomsday sayers again.

Thank you for your comment. It is best to have faith and raise the vibration rather than perpetuate fear. Through fear cult and religious leaders (not always much difference )have gained control over many souls and have taken them off their path.

Herman is a bit annoying here. Trying too hard to frame and reframe. I would much rather just listen to Dianne talk about it and with more and more detail. I want to hear about it from people who were there and experienced it. I don't want so much to hear people continue to theorize and wax psychological on it. The entire thing is way too complex and nuanced to do with any less than as many details as possible directly from the members that were there.

Why do people read memoirs and why are there still cults? This book is a cautionary tale that has over 2,000 almost all five-star reviews on Amazon alone. Maybe everyone is stupid because they found something redeeming and inspiring about Dianne's story. But thank you for your trolling comment. Which one of all of us is sick?
