Digestive and Liver Health services at Michigan Medicine recognizes the connection between the brain and the gut as a critical component to overall digestive health. Diaphragmatic breathing, or deep breathing, is a proven relaxation technique. There are additional gastrointestinal benefits because the activation of the diaphragm using this technique allows for a gentle massage of the intestines and stomach, aiding with abdominal pain, urgency, bloating and constipation. Learn how to use diaphragmatic breathing with this demonstration video from Megan Riehl, PsyD, Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor.

This was good teaching. I'm glad you teach the routine of not pulling the stomach muscles in on the exhale (as several others teachers do) because it's stressful on the abdominal muscles. You only need to inhale/exhale gently and naturally with diaphragm breathing.

My gym - the best in the city - and Personal Trainer there - a very competent and qualified young sportswoman - had me started with diaphragmatic (belly) breathing. However, my PT soon told me that, I should just have core and diaphragm activation and do rib cage expansion breathing. Part of this comes from my protruded (not out of local standard deviation, as I am fairly active) belly of a 55-year-old Indian. I am a bit confused about which one is good for me.

Not joking though, 8 months ago I too searched more about this topic because of KNY. Present day, I got rid of anxiety, feelings of inadequacy, I enjoy a better physical and psychological health, and it's all thanks to what I learned after introducing Pranayama into my daily routine. And there are breathing techniques that share certain resemblance to the anime, such s Breath of Fire, of Breath of the Ocean, but in the end it gives a lot more benefits you'd actually think.

Can someone please explain to me about after i try breathing from the stomach a few times, there is a feeling on the chest like i cant breathe and i have to fully breathe from the chest to get rid of that uneasy feeling.
@justindelove8960
@justindelove8960 5 лет назад
yes, i have had this problem. it took me a long time and a study of anatomy to correct. 'stomach' breathing is an illusion as the lungs are in the upper torso. when the diaphragm (a ring muscle around your waist) contracts your lungs expand (like squeezing a balloon and around its center). This expansion moves down as well as up, and it is the downward movement that creates the illusion of 'stomach breathing'. if you constrict your chest the downward movement will be stronger and the belly stick out a bit. however constricting your chest is dangerous and can cause many problems, like the ones you mention. there is a better way though. when you exert yourself to the point you must breath through your mouth, your breathing pattern changes automatically. instead of breathing up into your chest, you expand your lungs into your back taking deep powerful breaths. if you practice this you will develop a nice slim waist and a broad powerful back, which most athletes display well. this back breathing can be slowed down. and used for relaxation and revitalization bend your knees and breath in hard but slow as you sink down. feel you back rips expand to its limit. Breathe out slowly and powerfully through your mouth as you come up. then try breathing through your nose and doing the same thing. after that try sitting down and slower and gentler. you will notice that pressure runs down your and into the lower torso. the waist remains tight, but the belly expands. the lungs though are free to expand to their limit in the ribs at the back.

how do you exactly stop all movement of your upper hand? How to increase diaghpramtic breathing to get more of the stomach moving? I've seen a few videos but so far there hasnt been like a "trick" to make the air expand your lower hand more, except just breath in slowly?
@chouchoumuse2729
@chouchoumuse2729 Год назад
You should not stop all movements of your upper hand. The lungs are in the rib cage and that's where most of the air will go when you inhale so there will be movement on the chest. There is this myth that all the air needs to go down, the belly needs to stick out, and the chest needs to remain immobile. What we want to avoid is shallow breathing where only the upper chest expands and the shoulders go up. When we do deep, relaxed breathing and allow the diaphragm to move down as we inhale (its natural movement), it allows the rib cage to expand to the sides and the back. Yes, the belly will come out a bit as a consequence of the diaphragm moving down, but the entire torso will expand with each inhale, albeit in a relaxed way. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AWBkTgl_bw4.html&ab_channel=ChaplinPerformance

@thehumanpractice2985
@thehumanpractice2985 4 года назад
@@otlonii8426 You might be doing it wrong, visualizing the breath in your stomach and actually pushing the tummy outwards. What you want to do is actually push the stomach down your torso, making space for your lungs. It might sound like it smashes it but actually it's a soft massage with might help with digestion in general. This is done expanding the diaphragma. You might think of your body as a jar and is being filled with water. Just start by taking 10 natural breaths, counting out loud, and analyzing your breath while at it. Just fous and don't alter your breath, and do it 10 times. Then start "pouring water", inhaling, slowly until its all the way til the bottom, in your lower torso.Your stomach might go outwards, but dont force it. On the exhale though, you might try to work your abs, keeping them a little bit under stress to control exhalation, and push your stomach all the way in, until you feel your lungs out of oxygen. But not completely! Feel the natural reactiong of your body for cues of inhalation and exhalation. Whilst running out of air when exhaling, remember to profoundly relax the whole body, and prepare for next inhalation: The first one might not be perfect, but practicing is free, don't be afraid to keep exercising your breathing.

@hobi1kenobi112
@hobi1kenobi112 4 года назад
It takes practice and dedication and it's hard to do at first because we learn to chest breath over time. Reversing that is difficult but can be done with routine and patience. If you do it for a few minutes when you sit down in the evening or before bed that can be your routine. You can write a note to remind yourself to do it at a certain time of day. That helped me to fall into a routine with it. I do it all the time now, even when walking (which was the hardest thing) but it comes naturally the more you practice and strengthen your diaphragm. Eventally your brain takes over and does it on autopilot. Just build up gradually at your own pace. Good luck.

Effervescent you have to rehabituate ur body to stand up straight with ur shoulders back and just start by exhaling to your max and then conciously stop your chest to catch the air and use ur diaphragm. One more way to get your abdomen to ease in with the breathing reset is to use a medicine ball or a basketball and lay on it from your belly area. It will hurt a lot but you'll get through it. Just let loose of any concious tension you feel by exhaling while you do it. You'll find more help on Elliot Hulse's channel on deep breathing, or as he likes to say, breathing into your balls. What you're referring to is shallow breathing. This type of deep breathing is called diaphragmatic breathing, abdominal breathing, belly breathing, and paced respiration. When you breathe deeply, the air coming in through your nose fully fills your lungs, and the lower belly rises.For many of us, deep breathing seems unnatural. This interferes with deep breathing and gradually makes shallow "chest breathing" seem normal, which increases tension and anxiety. Shallow breathing limits the diaphragm's range of motion. The lowest part of the lungs doesn't get a full share of oxygenated air. That can make you feel short of breath and anxious. Deep abdominal breathing encourages full oxygen exchange - that is, the beneficial trade of incoming oxygen for outgoing carbon dioxide.
