@@legendbucwild They still had the FCC to answer to. Why do you think MTV banned him? It was also Dick Clark who tried to talk them out of it, so there's that.
I remember when this aired. I was in highschool and my dad literally fell off his chair laughing and kept saying 'Holy s%@t, Did he REALLY SAY THAT on national television???". I looked at my dad and said, YEP, he sure did! LOL
This man has courage, to do this at the top of his game one must have balls of steel, the next year (1990) he was filling Madison Square Garden to its capacity (20 thousand) 2 nights in a row. I saw him at the Greek Theater in 1993 and it was packed, men and women laughing their assess off carefree unlike today, oh, what a beautiful time in America, when people had a sense of humor.
But this humor was so bad? I get like Denis Leary, Bill Hicks, Sam Kinison. They appealed to a very repressed and puritan time where cursing was wholly banned from TV, everyone had to be "god-fearing" patriots and family friendly, anything that broke those rules was fun and exciting... but this? This is just plain bad, it's like the entire appeal was the character and saying dumb shit over and over again like a broken record. People must've been starved. There are thousand of comedians more raunchy, talented and clever than this today, they just don't pack stadiums and old farts don't know about them.
@@blurgle9185 Speak for yourself this is a matter of taste, and taste as you well know subjective, just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Oh, and one more thing before I forget, you too will be an old fart one day, you cannot help it, there are no alternatives, it is not negotiable, but you too one day will become an old gizzard, I guarantee it. Edit: Enjoy hour youth while you can, because it does go fast.
@@AlcibiadesMD a bit hypocritical to say "its subjective" when your post punctuates with the typical sentiment of "back when people had humor". And about old farts being unaware of new talent is just an objective truth, not a criticism of being old. I'm sorry you're insecure about it. I don't need reminders, I learned the hard lessons in life earlier than most.
Yeah. I came here expecting WAY worse. I watched that 3 minute clip of him talking about the gays in brooklyn which was a seriously offensive set thinking -- Damn! if this was just a normal set that MTV thing had to be crazy! Nope... Tamer than a newborn cub. ::shrug::
@@oldpantsnewjerseythe original commenter is just a 40 something year old who got the very end of MTV and acts like he was an 80s kid but was born in 1985. I can guarantee I’m correct. Unfortunately I can read people within one sentence online or in person. I’ve had to learn this skill from being used and abused my whole life. I started studying personality traits and social cues. There are only a handful of personalities. Once you figure them out, you can read people like a book. It’s a great asset to have. It’s saved me so much heart break, fights, misunderstandings, and wasted time. I promise you, one sentence from someone can tell you 85% about them. You just have to know what to listen for and look for. Body language isn’t viable over RU-vid so you have to look at spelling, grammar, connotation, and punctuation. Those 4 things will tell you about 75% of what the persons all about. Just remember trolls and rage bait are prevalent. That means someone is faking/over exaggerating their worst traits. This is a common deceptive tool used by many including me. My online personality versus my real word personality are 1000s of miles apart. Happy hunting and be safe
Put this up there with Norm MacDonald getting himself fired from Weekend Update for doing OJ jokes after having been warned not to. Success often stems from not caring about failure.
I'm here because I watched your video and wanted to watch this savagery. I've got a Heineken open, crack pipe warming by the lighter and my favorite hentai waifu pillow. Gonna wank it to some good Andrew Dice Clay. Thanks Danny!
He's doing the routine he was super famous for at that exact time. What did they expect? MTV rarely liked to arbitrarily ban things (Justify My Love video comes to mind). There was so much worse than what Dice did but everyone else always got a slap on the hand. For some reason they ban Dice.. for life! Never made sense. In any event MTV is totally irrelevant now. DICE wins.
He was supposed to just do the one line at the end introducing Cher, but right before he went on they told him Cher wasn't ready yet and to stall...so Dice being Dice obliged........
MTV was never the same after this. A few years later, Beavis had to be censored from saying the word "fire". Total PC bs. Ironically, they later had a show called "Undressed," which was softcore porn that bordered on Cinemax After Dark. Hypocrites.
@@gsb0311 He didn’t say they got smaller he said they started censoring. MTV was much rawer before this moment. Then they got sued over the “Fire” incident and it was much more toned down. For a while then it when full retard with real world and as far as I’m concerned killed itself. I ended up working with MTV on making the band I think season 3. Everyone that worked for them was a complete asshole.
Definitely the Jack Sprat one and the one about “wheeling the chick”. That definitely would be past what would have been acceptable for MTV then, using the words “tits” and “shit”, the latter particularly was not acceptable on basic cable back then.
I thought it was the saggy tits and licked her ass hole clean. He said on Larry king it was that last poem he started and then he remembered the Ending wasn't allowed. Pretty petty really. It was great 😃🤘
Things were different back in the "olden days" of 1989.. I hadn't heard "bitch" on tv until the mid 90's at least. about 10 years later I heard "shit". and I hear "dick" now and again.
What’s truly remarkable is how tame this is compared to the garbage that’s been on MTV the last several years. Hypocrisy at its finest. This was good for MTV, and it was even better for Dice.
Dice got banned from MTV 4 life after this night. Dice later recalled years later because Dick Clark was there losing his freaking mind. What did they expect from the Diceman. Legend!
The actual jacket auctioned for around $1700 in 2008. I'm sure you could legitimately own it for a (relatively) affordable price if you know how to bullshit.
Wow this dude totally slipped my mind. I forgot how fuckin funny he is LOL. The babies would be crying HARD nowadays though. You just cant tell a joke anymore its ridiculous
I was a sophomore in highschool when this came out. We had a cassette of Dice we would hear over and over in our friends car while driving up and down the strip in our town. Good times
In 1989 Andrew Dice Clay is banned for life from MTV. Basically he was censored for his comedy show. THE VERY NEXT YEAR, 1990, Eric Bogodsian and 2 Live Crew turn their appearance on the show into a political statement on the evils of music censorship. DO YOU GET THE IRONY?!?
Mtv knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they had him on. People forget that this was back when MTV was actually cool. Also, notice how the women in the audience are laughing at his jokes?
@@MD-uu5nt I can only conclude he came at a time swearing was edgy, or hi character reminds them of someone they know. But yeah, that 'comedy' is lost outside of America.
They still are but they have been programmed to think the opposite,.,,,people are bots, biologic robots.......dumbest form ever......they follow like sheeps......in 50 yrs a guy like DICE qill come and do the same humour and he'll be SOOOOO popular,,,,,it a cycle.
Those of us who knew, knew...and we tuned in because we knew that no matter what producers told him - this was going to happen. It was glorious. And then they were shocked? 🤣
Adc talked about this moment on Joe Rogan’s podcast …. Saying that mtv banned him for life after this, Dick Clark rushed to the stage after ADC’s opening….And his manager Sandy Galen called Adc saying he hoped this didn’t get to the west coast.
I miss the old MTV. For me the golden years of it were the late 90’s and early 2000’s. With Jackass and all spin offs. TRL and Headbangers Ball. Now they are terrible.
@@jannorris4140 Unfortunately sanity is now in the minority in the GQP. And one has tried to cancel more entertainment and freedoms than right-wing Christian dopes.
So the evangelical right would have been ok with this? the same evangelical group that make up the majority of the GOP's support. Why is it that every time someone or something gets cancelled it was "the left", remember the Dixie Chicks, werent they cancelled by the right? I am a lefty but had no issue with this, in fact I wouldn't be surprised that he was cancelled because of pressure from the all mighty religious do gooders on the right. Remember when Milton Berle would dress up like a woman on prime time tv and it was hilarious to everyone including those on the right , or how well loved Liberace was but what a flaming dresser he was but now the RIGHT want to cancel the transgender community like they are cancelling books in Florida and Texas, DUH!!!!
The same amount of people? He was banned for life. That would have been called “cancelled” by snowflakes like you back then. It’s amazing how many of you act like the 1980s… Where twisted sister and Ozzy Osbourne not to mention movies media and everything else in between we’re all put on littoral trial in front of Congress… Y’all act like the 80s were so OK with everything that came out at that time… No one was offended by anything…
If you were watching MTV at this time you’re likely closing in on 50 years old if not older… You should probably not be concerned about what is on MTV anymore…
Dice was a force that MTV couldn't handle. They told him to stall, they knew what was coming... If you haven't seen it, watch his show Dice. It's unbelievable.
He was banned for life from MTV for this (as if that's a bad thing), but they actually brought him back to do a bit about how he couldn't get in to the awards a few years later
I remember that night like yesterday. The media was outraged! Man, what I would give to live in that America again. God Bless America. God Bless Freedom 🙏🏿🇺🇸
I second that sentiment 💯 x a zillion, this was a time when America still laughed, when expression and aesthetics were encouraged, when laughing at sarcasm comedy was allowed to be expressed. I don’t like the state of things now, seems like Americans are loosing their freedom bit by bit, I hope is not too late to save the republic. As a foreigner who loves US I see what’s happening loud and clear…”Let’s go Brandon” 🇺🇸
As an up-and-coming comedian. My goal is to get him to blush as I say hold my beer. I'm gonna kick it up a knotch. It will have Larry Flint and Hugh Hefner blushing from their graves.
